    Derrickson Construction LLC
I think long and hard before giving someone a negative review but on this one, I feel it is my responsibility to warn others. If you like smoking-like-a-freight-train restaurant workers to do your project and do not mind trash and cigarettes left everywhere even after asking every time you see them for at least a couple of dozen times to stop leaving cigarettes and trash everywhere, then hire Kyle. Funny thing is that the debris they are supposed to save, the packaging and manuals to the products I purchased, they throw away! Like the 1500-dollar skylight that they unpackaged, threw everything away, and then couldn't figure out how to install and I cannot return. They live by the motto of leaving everything worse than they found it. Way way way worse. Unbelievably indescribable worse. I hired Derrickson Construction a couple of years ago to renovate one of my cottages. The cottage I renovated the year before went fairly well with a different contractor but that previous contractor took 10 months. These are 575sqft cottages that I have gutted before the contractor begins so they have a nice clean blank slate. I explained this to Kyle Derrickson and I gave him a tour of the previously-remodeled cottage. I pointed out the high-end finishes and showed him the level of perfection expected. Kyle was extremely confident that he could do an exact duplicate renovation in a different cottage in just 5 months. I contracted him to do the job and we even agreed upon a late-fee clause to be included in the contract for every day that the project went over. It is now a year and a half and NOT one single aspect of this cottage is complete. In other words, siding was started but not finished. Porch was started but not finished. Cabinets were started but not finished. Tile started but not finished... The things that were finished were really really bad. Of the 2 skylights that I had, his restaurant workers only put in one and it leaked and leaked and leaked until I hired a roofer (Kyle was supposed to do the roof once finished everything else but he never finished anything) to install a new roof and to seal the one skylight once and for all. VA Carolina Buildings ([*** Link removed ***] are excellent roofers btw! Can't say enough wonderful things about the beautiful metal roofs they installed on my cottages in one single day. You heard me. New roofs in a single day. VaCarolina are an awesome group. But, back to Kyle, the entire floor of the cottage was swollen and ruined from the water and had to be replaced because of their not knowing how to install a skylight and throwing away the directions. After a year and a half and not being able to take sleeping on the floor of one of my other cottages another day and not having another breath to waste on trying to get him to finish the job and finish it right, I realize that is never ever going to happen. I reported him to DPOR who have the power to take his contractor license and keep him from ruining others' lives. DPOR first informs me that Derrickson Construction LLC isn't even licensed (but Kyle has since resolved this issue) and had another complaint against him on file. Upon reporting him to DPOR, Kyle had his attorney send me a letter stating that he would not be paying any of the late fees although they seem to feel it fine to keep the 40k I've paid for a job terribly done. I am sick about this. Please please run when you see the big red truck (that daddy bought him) with Derrickson Construction LLC. He will leave you broke, busted, and with a project you wished would've never been started. I've since learned that this twenty-something worked for Allen Clark Construction Co for just a little while before thinking that he knew it all and could go out on his own and keep all the money instead of just having an hourly salary. Typical twenty-something, which is why I hesitate to give him a bad review but the problem is, he is ruining people's lives. Beware!

    Harrys Painting

Harry turned a 4 week project into a 7 week project.  He didn't show up on the first day of work and then actually worked an average of 3 days a week making too many excuses to list. His demeanor was gruff and defensive. He constantly bullied and berated his helper who he blamed for everything.  It was very difficult to witness.  When I approached Harry concerning anything regarding the job, a missed spot say or when did he think I could get back to sleeping in my bedroom, he went immediately on the defensive either accusing me of interfering with his process or blaming it on his helper. His process was to disrupt every room in the house at the same time rather then completing one room at a time.  He flat out refused to paint the kitchen pantry (24" X 10" X 8ft with 4 shelves) because he said it isn't a closet. He did paint the linen closet without issue?   Sheets vs. cans, interesting.  At the end of the job he refused to move my furniture back in place, called me a WACKO, and left my home filthy and in total disarray.

Harry Shrieves is a not a person you want in your home.  He is unprofessional, disrespectful, rude, and mentally unstable.

    Chaney Construction
I love this company. Chris is a valued resource in our circle of acquaintances and we are happy to see him be so successful. From start to finish, the work went exceptionally well, and was finished on time. We would work with no one else in the industry. For high-end work, we heartily recommend Chaney Constructuon (based in Elkridge).

    THE CARPENTER'S SONS
I originally contacted The Carpenter's Son to do the interior painting of my daughter's townhouse, as the company was listed under Interior Painting. However, when I met with Dan, I discovered he was a general contractor who has extensive experience in home repair and remodeling. Since I live in another state than my daughter, it was a real blessing to me to find Dan. He was able to do everything I needed done to update/remodel the townhouse and get it on the market to sell in just a few short weeks.. I was really worried about how I was going to get everything done on the house and coordinate it all, not knowing the area and service providers. But Dan and his wonderful crew just stepped in and took that burden right off my shoulders and went to work. Dan is a very well trained contractor with years of experience who is able to do anything you ask of him. When he ran into problems in the remodel, he offered various suggestions on how we could correct the problems and as inexpensively as possible. There were also a few things Dan did at no additional cost to me, which was a big help financially. Dan and his crew were always on time and let me know what their plans were for that day and the next. Dan is an extremely nice man and very easy to work with. He is very knowledgeable in his field and can make various suggestions on ways to tackle getting the job done, from bare bones to higher end fixes. There are not enough words of praise for Dan, The Carpenter's Sons, and his crew. They take great pride in their workmanship and are very easy to work with and a pleasure to have in your home at all times. I give The Carpenter's Sons an A+++++++++++++++++++++++ rating. You will be very pleased with any work you hire them for. I know I was.
