    Rogers Wildlife Control, LLC
Roger, Scott and the crew did an excellent job in taking care of our bat problem! I contacted Roger on a Friday and he came out to assess our problem the next day. Turns out we had well over 100 bats in the attic and they had probably been there many years, maybe 8 to 10. They had the whole crew out in a few days complete with bucket truck, equipment trailer and several pick up trucks. They sealed all openings, installed ridge guards, screened six vents, sealed all dormers, removed bat droppings, sprayed disinfectant and deodorant, and installed new insulation -- Plus Got Rid Of The Bats! Roger and his crew are extremely knowledgeable, professional, courteous, thorough and importantly they care about the customer and strive to do the job right, plus they go the extra mile! I highly recommend them!!!

    Patterson Chimney Sweep and Relining
I live in an old family home. One fireplace has had a lot of use over the generations, another had not been used since a few years after the house was built in the late 1920s. Mr Patterson inspected both fireplaces and chimney flues and cleaned one. I had planned on him cleaning both flues, but after he inspected the fireplace upstairs, he said it didn’t need anything, it was fine and cleaning or relining was unnecessary. That impressed me, because he could have easily told me both needed sweeping or even relining and I would have known no different. He arrived as scheduled, and quickly got to work. He was careful to lay down a large protective cover over the hearth area so there was no mess and had the equipment to do the job thoroughly. I am happy that I now have two fireplaces that are ready for winter and got an honest evaluation of my fireplaces. He was very professional throughout. I will definitely call him again next year.

    TIM WRIGHT
Three situations, so I'll describe each in turn:
    1. My house is built on a slope, with a mountain behind the house. Keeping water at bay can be a problem, and moisture had rotted out a treated timber at the back corner; every time we had a downpour, I was getting some water on the floor. I was unsure what to do, given that I haven't kept up with building materials technology. Tim knew immediately what needed to be done, and after watching a video on "This Old House" using the same technology, I concluded that he was right. Anyway, he made that corner of my house waterproof, and then, at his own initiative, he created a sort of gully so that water would be deflected away from the house and go underneath a wooden walkway.
    2. Several men anointing themselves "carpenters" redid my bedroom bathroom some years ago. I had had part of their damage repaired right after their blight, then realized this last year that the floor under the sink was rotting away because of shoddy plumbing work. Tim fixed the plumbing and replaced that section of floor with tile. The tile extends only to the dropline under the sink, but it looks really good in combination with the heart-pine floor. He also reworked the interior plumbing with molding that matches the style of the sink, which is an antique that I went to some trouble to acquire.
    3. Tim replaced a rotten timber framing the gable and then painted the gable.
I live in extreme Southwest Virginia, between Dungannon and Castlewood. It's hard to find skilled labor here. Tim drove from his home in Kingsport to do this work. He apparently had a longtime job near Atlanta but moved here for family reasons, and I feel lucky to have found him. He is not the cheapest labor around, but I'm fed up with having repairs done twice, which is a total waste of money, and I feel confident that Tim knows what he is doing. He is knowledgable, hardworking and personable, and I don't worry about having him on my property. He is extremely punctual, and I'm a stickler about that. I detest waiting for workers who never show up or show up hours after they're scheduled to be on the job. The first day Tim worked here, he called to let me know he would be late--he had received an emergency call from another client. It turned out that he was not as late as he thought he would be, and he has turned up at the exact hour or a little before ever since. So my impression is that he is extremely conscientious and does good work. He does not do new construction; I asked, as I'm wanting to add a small structure. But he seems to be good at fixing problems (he's trained in plumbing and electricity, he said), and he's a wonderful painter. I can tell from dealing with him that if he thinks something is beyond his skills, he'll say so. Would that some of the other people who have worked on my house had done that!!

    Doors & More
I can't comment on price or quality because this company apparently never intends to get in touch, despite the fact that I've called three times and gotten promises of call-backs and a visit to my home for an estimate. I first talked with the owner of Doors and More in Abingdon by phone in early November. I wanted double French doors. Owner said it would probably be mid-January before he could get someone out. Called again after the holidays to ask about yet more doors I need, and whoever I spoke with seemed to indicate that I should have heard from the estimator by then. I asked that the owner call me, and that never happened, either. I have no idea how this company stays in business.

    BRANDYWINE ANTIQUES
I can refinish simple pieces myself, but I had some very complicated pieces that needed more skill than I have: a Joerns Bros. art deco bedroom set with a multitude of tiny veneer pieces, a dining table that I had managed to destroy the top of, and a few smaller projects. Gizmo and his helpers did wonderful work--these pieces are quite beautiful now--and they found new hardware (door pulls, etc.) that matched the original hardware exactly. I never spend much money for antiques, but I have lucked into some wonderful bargains and have inherited a few pieces. By the time I pay for refinishing, the furniture is much more expensive, of course. But because I paid little to begin with, the refinishing still ends up being a bargain. I could never afford these pieces if I bought them fully finished in any antiques shop (including Gizmo's).
I have been delighted with Brandywine Antiques' refinishing work and am unlikely to use anyone else in the future. And the French doors I bought from Gizmo were a great bargain. They're heavy as all get-out because they're built of real hardwood, and there's no way you can buy that kind of quality at any price anymore, given that no one these days is letting the trees age to full growth before harvesting.
On the personal-but-business side: Gizmo has a strong reputation for honesty, and I've found it to be justified. He is very personable and sweet natured and is easy to deal with. I don't have a lot of patience with arrogance or fakery or snobbery, so this matters some to me. You might think of him as a good country boy (a well-spoken one, however) who happens to know a heck of a lot about antiques.

ST PAUL BUILDERS & SUPPLY CO
We use them for a little bit of everything. If we need one or two things, we will use them because they are close to us. We buy wood, paint, stains and other things from them. There is not much to choose from. The price is a slight bit higher, but they are convenient. They don't always have everything, but if you need something simple it is a good place. I will continue to use them.

    LOWE'S
We got the wiring conduits from them. We also used them for wood work and varnishes. We did the work ourselves. They know what they are doing. They are helpful as well. I will continue to use them in the future.
