  • There is a certain amount of brushing me off when I call with a problem. The desire is to keep me from bothering the surgeon; at least that is how it feels. I would have appreciated the fact that since I had such a serious surgery that somebody had called to check up on me and make sure that things got better; but they never did. They are pretty available; mainly I see his assistant, sometimes an intern and always a lab technician; the lab technicians are wonderful.

  • I first had an appointment in April for back pains. I am highly active in working out and staying fit but unfortunately have had to stop doing that (for now). He took XRAYS in the office and then sent me for an MRI to confirm what he thought. I got called back 2 days after the MRI with the results and asked to come in. Dr Childs said my only option was surgery to fix a herniated disc and a bulging disc.
Since I'm a fighter I wanted to try everything else first. He was good about saying we'll try it but he guaranteed by end of summer I'd be in surgery (this was May). We tried everything else and at my follow up end of July (on a Friday) I said he was right that nothing worked. In the meantime I had gotten 3 other options and all of those doctors said the same thing that surgery was the only option. I was scheduled for surgery that following week - just 5 days after seeing him in July.
When I arrived for surgery he was waiting for me and explained everything again in depth to myself and husband. I spent the night in the hospital and before Dr. Child's went home he came to see me in the recovery room saying he talked to my husband but said everything went great and he'd see me the next day.
I spent the night at INOVA Fairfax and Dr. Childs came the next day to see me.
I've had my follow up appointments and things are great. I'm not back to my hard core workouts but suspect I will be soon. I still have some tightness in the back but with more therapy that is going away.
The surgery did exactly what Dr Child's said it would. He makes you feel relaxed and makes sure not to rush you. He also talks to his patients more in a friendly type of personality and makes sure to answer any and all questions. He is a bit harder to get an initial appointment but the follow up's are much easier.
His nurse Suzanne is also wonderful. She made sure to address any questions I had after surgery and my first follow up after surgery was with her.
My only reason's for a B rating on some were because of the office staff. I found the receptionist to be rude and when I needed to make a follow up appointment she started to give a bit of an attitude. When I checked in for one of my appointments they all just stood around talking. I said I was there for an appointment and all they said was put your name on the page and go sit down.

  • It was an excellent experience. He listens and he just does what is necessary. He is professional, personable, and friendly. I have been to a lot of doctors and without a doubt he is the best one I have been to.

  • The surgery went well. Although I hope never to need joint replacement surgery in the future, I would definitely return to Dr. Theiss if necessary.

  • Surgery went as planned, follow up is still ongoing. No complications or errors occurred. Would recommend.
