Lighting Installation reviews in Blacksburg

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • ABC was fantastic at tackling our very large remodeling project. We completely redesigned the layout of the kitchen, dining room, and garage entry. ABC's end result is exactly what we visioned from the beginning! Now our kitchen is open to our outside spectacular views and our first floor fits all our needs. We look forward to bringing ABC back to complete future projects, they are hands down an awesome team.

  • Was told it would take 2 weeks to complete job. Job completed 10 weeks later only to be torn out and started over after I complained to owner. Shower walls were torn out twice and floor of shower 3 times. Crockett was to return and fix molding and painting after the last floor replacement. I have called 3 times to arrange for cleanup and painting to be be completed and have yet to get a return call from George Crockett. One guy broke a pipe off in the floor of bathroom and it stained the ceiling below in family room. This repair was also not completed. I highly recommend. finding another contractor if you are going to do any remodeling.

  • After purchasing a small 1958 home in its original state, my husband and I quickly became overwhelmed with the renovations we wanted to do. We met with 3 other contractors before finding Jimmy and Dollman Construction - we both knew right away we wanted hire him for our kitchen and dining area renovation. Jimmy was great at listening to us during our initial meeting and helped us sort out our long list of ideas and wants and organize them into realistic possibilities. He was upfront from the start about what we could do with our budget and how the renovation process would go...being new doing any major renovations this was a huge plus for us! Jimmy created a set of drawings of our entire house to help us plan for our multi-phased full house renovation project. This was important so that we would not have to ever re-do anything with each room/area we renovate over the years. In addition, we now have an idea of the financial aspect and process of major renovations.

From the day of demolition until the project was complete, my husband and I felt very comfortable and trusted Jimmy with the process. Our project manager, Brad, kept things running smoothly on the day to day basis and resolved any bump that came up in a quick timely manner. The kitchen was completely gutted, the wall between the kitchen and dining area was removed to create one large space and we also removed the wall between the kitchen and living room to open up the basement staircase and connect the kitchen to the living room. To maximize space, Jimmy relocated a built in cabinet and designed a custom banquette with storage in the dining area for additional seating. To accommodate a "must have" gas double oven range on a peninsula with a raised bar, he was able to locate a hood that is mounted flush on the ceiling so there is no physical barrier hanging down. Dry wall replaced paneling on two living room walls, recessed lighting was installed in the kitchen, dining area and above the now open basement stairs, pendant lights above the raised bar on the peninsula and a pantry above the basement stairs create a modernized look in the house. Friends and family couldn't believe how much our house has changed so far and we constantly hear compliments on the architectural design and quality of work.

Overall, we cannot say enough great things about Jimmy and his crew. When I had a couple freak out moments during the process and was behind deciding on paint colors and knobs Jimmy, Brad, Gerald and Rob were very patient and took the time to reassure me of the process. We cannot wait until next year when we start phase 2!

  • My project entailed transforming a dark, space-consuming stairway
encased within walls, into an open floating stairway. The old staircase
completely separated the living area from the kitchen-dining rooms,
prohibiting any conversation between those areas. I wanted to create a
space that would allow the entire first floor to function as one open
room for entertaining. After interviewing a few contractors, I hired
Jimmy Dollman (Dollman Construction). From the first meeting, Jimmy
separated himself from the others. He asked relevant questions to
ensure that he understood exactly what I wanted from the renovation.
After several conversations and review of an idea book, Jimmy
completed design drawings and then thoroughly explained each part of
the renovation process. Certain design elements required thinking
outside the box so that building code requirements were met, while
still creating the look and ?feel? I wanted. The timeline for completion
of the project was to be no later than Aug 2nd.
It was completed on July 25th. I then added an additional project, the replacement of the kitchen
flooring, on July 28th. The stairway renovation turned out so well that it
made the kitchen floor appear shabby and out of place. Even with
special order tile, Dollman completed everything by Aug 15th
The renovation was done on our second residence, a townhouse that is
a 3 ½ hour drive from our permanent residence. We only made one
visit during the four month renovation. However, Jimmy routinely sent
pictures at all major milestones. I could also count on receiving his
updates every Friday. I always felt ?in the loop? and fully informed. I
was never worried or concerned about not being on site.
The townhouse has vaulted ceilings in the living area, yet was dark and
relatively small with just one North facing window. The dining room has
a sliding glass door with Southern exposure and opens into a huge open
kitchen. There was a prefab gas fireplace that took precious space from
the small living room, yet was never used. The design that Jimmy and I
created got rid of the fireplace, and completely opened up the
staircase, making it appear to ?float? with as few visible support beams
as possible. We chose a stainless steel cable banister system that
allowed the dining and living areas to become one open living space.
The end result is an incredible contemporary design that takes
maximum advantage of the vaulted ceiling.
The demo included removal of the fireplace?s gas line, relocation of
numerous electrical outlets/switches, removal of four walls and the
existing wood floor. New hardwood oak flooring was installed. Custom
made steps and wood railings were milled and stained to match the
dark cherry colored flooring (perfectly, may I say). With the entire
downstairs repainted a crisp white (less my one Chicago Maroon accent
wall), the contrast was made even more dramatic with the installation
of new lighting. Two can lights on a dimmer switch under the first
landing were added as a suggestion from Jimmy. Two new pendant
lights and matching stairway sconce of pewter and nickel completed the
contemporary feel of the new space.
An area that was considered marginally functional became a perfect
warm and inviting entertainment space. Now when you walk through
the front door, you feel like you could be in a trendy loft apartment in
Now that the project is complete we know without a doubt that we
hired the right contractor. The new staircase exceeded all our
expectations. It was completed ahead of schedule and on
budget?with no hidden expenses or financial surprises! Mr. Dollman
and his company?s professionals were a pleasure to work with,
responsive, caring and talented. We would not think of working with
any other contractor in the Roanoke or Blacksburg area.

  • .I planned to install a bathroom vent fan myself, but after seeing the terrible condition of the old house wires in the attic I decided to have the job done professionally.  I called Crockett Home Improvement because they've done a lot of other projects for us over the years and have always given us excellent value.  Our home is a big investment, so we want the work done well, and CHI always comes thru for us.
As we were in no hurry, I said that our job could be scheduled whenever it was convenient; an appointment was made for about a week later.  The electrician showed up right on schedule, I gave him the keys, explained what we wanted done and left for work.  I asked him to wire the fan, replace a ceiling light fixture junction box with a new box, replace all the wiring and to install a separate wall switch for the fan.  He called me about an hour or so later to say that he replaced cotton insulated wiring in the attic which was badly frayed, installed a new junction box and wired the fan.  He then said that in order to install a wall switch he'd have to remove some ceramic tile.  We agreed that since the tile was about 60 years old, removing it would be a risky proposition, so he wired the fan to turn on when the ceiling light is turned on.  Since the fan is very quiet, the sound isn't obtrusive.
I was impressed with his candor about removing the ceramic tile.  Had any tiles been broken we would have been out of luck and the bathroom wouldn't look as good as it does.
I think it's a tribute to Crockett's people that I had no concern about leaving him in the house unattended.
We're impressed (as usual) with the top quality work that CHI did and the professionalism of the electrician.  If he'd tried to remove the tiles, per my initial instructions, he would have been within his rights to say that it was done at my request.  Instead, he gave me his professional assessment, which I really appreciate.
As usual, another great job from Crockett Home Improvement.

  • The electrician arrived on time and was very professional. Explained what was needed. He had to run out to the local hardware store and get the new receptacles. We were experiencing some problems with another circuit in the house and we were concerned about safety. He could easily have convinced us that something needed to be changed or repaired but he didn't. He told us that it wasn't a major problem and told us that there was no safety issues and that no work was necessary at this time. We appreciated the integrity that he displayed. We'll certainly use Enquist again if we need electrical work done in our home.

  • The provider started the project a month ahead of the scheduled time. The renovation entailed removal and replacement of tub and surround as well as tiling of floor and installing of new faucets. They also replaced the light/heat/fan fixture in the ceiling. The entire project took 5 days. Mr. Dollman's employees performed the work in a timely and skilled manner. They made sure that they had materials we had selected and were always very professional.

  • Matt from Bell Electronics did several jobs around my house. I could not be happier. He was professional, on time, clean (cleaned up after the work) and respectful. He took the time to explain what would be done and was patient when answering my many questions. I would highly recommend this company and will use them again in the future!

  • We are highly satisfied with Appalachian Building Concepts performance on what we asked them to do.  We originally had an appointment with a different company to give us an estimate on our bathroom, but I quickly canceled that appointment when consulting Angie's List.  While canceling that other company's appointment with us, I noticed that Appalachian Building Concepts had such excellent reviews on Angie's List, and that Mike had taken the time to reply to each of his customers within the review.  It convinced me that I should call him and I'm very happy with that decision.  Mike was able to meet with us very soon after I called him, and we described what we wanted to do in the bathroom.  He offered suggestions and also offered to let us call references if we wanted to check on the quality of his work.  His estimate was reasonable and his available start time fit our hoped-for timeframe.

When Mike and his team began work, they performed the work as quickly as one could expect while still maintaining high quality, and were highly professional.  They took a little longer than they originally thought they would, and I spent a bit more on the job than the original estimate, but this was due to unexpected complications with the work that weren't apparent when Mike gave the estimate - one such item was replacing our large vanity cabinet because of not apparent water damage to the back of the cabinet.  While this did cost a bit more, I'd guess that Mike ended up saving me money on this replacement by referring me to someone who did an excellent job in making a new cabinet to fix the space at a price that was very reasonable.  Mike always provided as much detail to me as I requested on pricing (and sometimes more than I requested, which I appreciated), and it was a good experience dealing with someone who is honest and stands by their work, and can offer good recommendations for things like the vanity cabinet.  Mike's employees that I had a chance to talk to on-site were also great people, and spoke highly of Mike as an employer, and I think that is important as well.
I would absolutely recommend Mike and Appalachian Building Concepts to anyone looking for work on their home, and in fact recommended him to my mother for some work she wanted done already.

  • As you can see I like him! Every job I?ve had done has been done by the same two workers. They are excellent! Greg himself is very easy to work with. He?s a charming person. The work was excellent. I?ve used him over and over and I will use him again. He?s on my list of people that I can trust.
