    A-1 Heating And Cooling
    I have used them for years. Recently I had them visit my rental property to perform the semi annual service. Everything was fine but the tenant squatters ��� purchased ��� filters at my expense. The ESA has always been operated as a routine check of the HVAC with their reporting problems and recommending repairs, as needed. Not only didA-1 NOT check with me but they provided expensive filters to the Squatting tenants and charged them to me without my authorization. When I received the bill I immediately objected and explained that this was1 not part of our usual agreement and 2 that the filters are part of the tenants responsibilities. I insisted that they bill the tenants immediately. Instead they then transferred the charge to my home agreement (wth). I again called them and explained that they would need to bill the tenants Today I received a call from A-1 demanding that I pay for the unauthorized charge. I will pay and NEVER again use or recommend A-1. Clearly I cannot trust their service nor their willingness to actually honor the agreement. I am extremely glad that the tenants did not ask for an additional heat pump to be installed! I paid them $120 per heat pump per year for 2 service visits plus any parts that I had to purchase with my express approval. On more than one occasion I had to order parts personally and pay an additional fee for installation.

    When i called Blue Ridge I offered to have the tech come by at the end of the day, as he lived near by. He showed up at the appointed time, on his way home. I described the problem while he was in his truck. Five minutes later the drain was fixed and he was gone. Five minutes work, scheduled for his convenience, yet I was given a $125 bill, which I had to pay. I called Blue Ridge the next day and was told I'd have to talk to the owner. I finally got him on the phone (he never returned my calls). No one had bothered to brief him on my issue, so he was unaware of the circumstances but simply blew me off. Basically he said that I could take my business elsewhere, which I did.

    A-1 workers are very courteous, punctual and seem expert at doing home installations. They finished installing the main HVAC system on the first day, and the mini-split system on the 2nd day. I was pleased with having comfortable levels of cooling in my house during this sweltering summer. I immediately gave them a check for the full amount. A month or so later, however, I started noticing a lot of dust in the mini-split filters, even though I also was running a separate HEPA air purifier near the unit's air intake. This concerned both me and A-1, so they sent over a technician at no charge to see if there could be a problem. The technician inserted some extra foam behind the mini-split filters, and gave detailed instructions on how to clean everything every week. I carefully followed the instructions, which involved using a special brush, spray-foam cleaner, and physically rinsing all the media. Even then, however, another month or so later the unit stopped working completely. Again a technician was sent to my home at no charge, and he completely disassembled the unit. There he found a lot of dust in places inaccessible to consumers. He even had to call for back-up assistance to finish the job. A day or so later I received a call from A-1, that in order for the mini-split to keep working, I'd have to have a special cleaning every other month -- at a cost of $120 --- for LIFE. I objected to that expense, which soon would amount to thousands of dollars, and which I'd not been warned about at all when mini-splits were being extolled by the sales guy. Now I'm hoping for help from Angie's List to help us arrive at a fair solution.

    They did an excellent job, providing a detailed list of what was reviewed and the status of each item, offering us the option of what to fix and what to wait on and providing pricing for each. A problem with the thermostat occurred less than a week later and they returned very quickly and fixed the problem at no additional labor cost.

    BP&H has done satisfactory work at my house for many years.  Unfortunately, the last experience did not go well. Because the part needed was apparently unavailable, the plumber jerry-rigged a new one to the boiler.  That repair took 3 trips and the repair man never gave me an estimate or any information about what the problem was, how much it might cost, or if I should fix or replace it.  There were numerous exposed wires on it after the repair.  When the boiler wouldn't start again ( the original problem), within the month of repair, they came out but charged $90 for a 10 minute visit.  Later that day, the boiler wouldn't start again.  I ended up figuring out the problem and taping the faulty connection. 
    When I disputed the $90 bill I never got a response saying they agreed or disagreed.  Several months later I got an overdue bill. My husband spoke to someone there and they cancelled the bill. 
    My overall impression was that both the repair skill and the business end of the company are below par.

    I was very pleased with both the plumbing and the electrical services of Blacksburg Plumbing, Heating and Electric.  They were very quick to respond to both issues.  A fuse had blown on some kitchen appliances, including the refrigerator.  I had to call after hours and the response was very quick.  The technicians on both calls were very pleasant and professional, and the cost was reasonable.
