I was not pleased with the quality of work. They did a decent job installing vinyl floors and backsplash but other overall quality of the remodel was poor. The floor was not installed level at at the transition point where the cabinet/bar was installed and then he argued with me that it was the house sinking but only at a very localized point. After he finished he didnt screw in the light fixtures on the backsplash and I had to do it myself however the screw holes and backsplash was preventing me from being able to install so I had to chip away the grout and backsplash to install. The sheet rock was not sanded down properly and the light switch box was installed crooked. I will never use them again.

ABC was fantastic at tackling our very large remodeling project. We completely redesigned the layout of the kitchen, dining room, and garage entry. ABC's end result is exactly what we visioned from the beginning! Now our kitchen is open to our outside spectacular views and our first floor fits all our needs. We look forward to bringing ABC back to complete future projects, they are hands down an awesome team.

    Crockett Home Improvement Inc
Was told it would take 2 weeks to complete job. Job completed 10 weeks later only to be torn out and started over after I complained to owner. Shower walls were torn out twice and floor of shower 3 times. Crockett was to return and fix molding and painting after the last floor replacement. I have called 3 times to arrange for cleanup and painting to be be completed and have yet to get a return call from George Crockett. One guy broke a pipe off in the floor of bathroom and it stained the ceiling below in family room. This repair was also not completed. I highly recommend. finding another contractor if you are going to do any remodeling.

    Schwab Remodeling
Most of the time Mike is involved with remodeling. Mike will tackle many different types of jobs, inside and outside. He never covers up rot or other problems when he finds any. Rather he contacts me and photographs what he has found. For years I have told him that we trust him to do what needs to be done and understand that can run into extra labor and material costs, which we will pay for. Still he prefers to discuss the remedy and the increase in cost to repair the mess correctly to avoid future problems. Then, Mike does the work. Our goal is that it will not need to be repaired again. If you want to slap on some sort of repair and not contact the building inspector, then do not call Mike. He values his license and his reputation. Also, if you want to just slap together something, Mike is not your man. When Mike is done with a job, he wants to be proud to have his name on it. He measures multiple times and makes sure things fit snuggly or loosely, whatever the situation requires. It bugs him if bi-fold doors do not match in the middle or hang straight. He reminds me if something needs ventilation or clearances to perform correctly. It costs more to have the job done by someone who bothers to read the manufacturers' directions and then follows them. If the humidity is too high or temperature is too high or too low for the product, Mike will wait until conditions are correct. He makes sure that he allows enough time for things to cure as directed in the instructions. He picks products based upon the time available and conditions. Mike is the only contractor whom I feel comfortable leaving alone and know that our rental or our own home will not be damaged or coated in dust when he leaves it. Mike bothers to put down coverings on the floors and other surfaces so he does not unnecessarily grind in grit or drip paint or other chemicals. He builds barriers and uses fans to try to contain dust. No one is perfect, but Mike tries to pay attention to all the details. Usually he succeeds. And he knows how to use the incredible number of specialty tools he has accumulated over the years. I also recommend Mike for troubleshooting what is causing something to be amiss in your structure - moisture, leaning walls, soft spots, etc. His observational skills and years of experience have helped us many, many times! Mike is usually very covered up with work and behind the schedule he hoped to meet, but I would not hold that against him for that because what he does saves us time, aggravation and money for years and years.

    Schwab Remodeling
I hired Schwab remodeling after getting one other estimate (that was quite similar) as well as numerous conversations with other contractors at the home reno fair.  The bathroom hadn't been updated for 50 years.  Mike took the bathroom down to the studs and replaced the shower surround, toilet, vanity and floor.  Although we had planned to leave the tub in place and just polish it and not to touch the ceiling, Mike ended up refinishing the tub and replacing the ceiling because they would not have looked right in a new  room. That and other advice was dead on.  Mike is very knowledgeable and really pays attention to detail. When something came up, like a  radiator cover that was hard to deal with, Mike made everything work perfectly and was undaunted.
The tiling around the tub looks terrific because Mike payed special attention to the pattern and design.  He had good design sense and made recommendations about grout, tile selection and other things. He also uses the best materials and a special tile underlayment that gives professional results.
Mike used Aquarius plumbing and an electrician friend as subcontractors and had everything well-coordinated.
Because it's just Mike and Amelia, it's very nice to have them around.  No loud music or other annoying personal habits.  At the beginning of the project I worried about my cats getting out but it turns out that Mike and Amelia are animal lovers and one of our cats became their constant companion.  We even hired Amelia to be a catsitter while we were away.
If there is a downside, it is that, since it's just the 2 of them, it can take a while to get on Mike's schedule, and there is no hurry-up mode.  Mike is deliberate and exacting.  If he says a project will take 6-8 weeks, believe him.

    Southern Comfort Construction Inc.
It has not gone well, or even good. First, please look at this company's record at the Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia. Southern Comfort Construction of Roanoke, Virginia has a well deserved rating of "F."  There are three complaints, two within the last year....and this doesn't include the complaint I will be filing.

I also recommend that you look up this contractor's license at the website of the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.  There is a complaint filed and mine will soon be filed.  The text of that complaint is the same as the complaints with the Better Business Bureau and my experience.

I hired Southern Comfort Construction as part of the warranty program with Lumber Liquidators.  The installation cost was approximately $1,500 and the materials were over $4,000.  I trusted that I was being referred to a reputable contractor. Because of this I made the mistake of not checking with the Better Business Bureau or the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.

I like the flooring.  The color is beautiful and after a year, the material has withstood normal traffic.  When the flooring was installed there were several installation errors.  I have no problem with anyone making a mistake.  I'm writing this review because after nine months, 20 phone calls, over 95 individual emails the installation errors have not been corrected.  The owner, Dennis Corey, has missed appointments, not returned calls, and basically treated me in a rude and unprofessional manner.  My experience is the same as others who have filed complaints. I can not recommend Southern Comfort Construction in Roanoke, Virginia.  It has been a horrible experience working with Southern Comfort Construction and Dennis Corey.

    Dollman Construction, Inc
My project entailed transforming a dark, space-consuming stairway
encased within walls, into an open floating stairway. The old staircase
completely separated the living area from the kitchen-dining rooms,
prohibiting any conversation between those areas. I wanted to create a
space that would allow the entire first floor to function as one open
room for entertaining. After interviewing a few contractors, I hired
Jimmy Dollman (Dollman Construction). From the first meeting, Jimmy
separated himself from the others. He asked relevant questions to
ensure that he understood exactly what I wanted from the renovation.
After several conversations and review of an idea book, Jimmy
completed design drawings and then thoroughly explained each part of
the renovation process. Certain design elements required thinking
outside the box so that building code requirements were met, while
still creating the look and ?feel? I wanted. The timeline for completion
of the project was to be no later than Aug 2nd.
It was completed on July 25th. I then added an additional project, the replacement of the kitchen
flooring, on July 28th. The stairway renovation turned out so well that it
made the kitchen floor appear shabby and out of place. Even with
special order tile, Dollman completed everything by Aug 15th
The renovation was done on our second residence, a townhouse that is
a 3 ½ hour drive from our permanent residence. We only made one
visit during the four month renovation. However, Jimmy routinely sent
pictures at all major milestones. I could also count on receiving his
updates every Friday. I always felt ?in the loop? and fully informed. I
was never worried or concerned about not being on site.
The townhouse has vaulted ceilings in the living area, yet was dark and
relatively small with just one North facing window. The dining room has
a sliding glass door with Southern exposure and opens into a huge open
kitchen. There was a prefab gas fireplace that took precious space from
the small living room, yet was never used. The design that Jimmy and I
created got rid of the fireplace, and completely opened up the
staircase, making it appear to ?float? with as few visible support beams
as possible. We chose a stainless steel cable banister system that
allowed the dining and living areas to become one open living space.
The end result is an incredible contemporary design that takes
maximum advantage of the vaulted ceiling.
The demo included removal of the fireplace?s gas line, relocation of
numerous electrical outlets/switches, removal of four walls and the
existing wood floor. New hardwood oak flooring was installed. Custom
made steps and wood railings were milled and stained to match the
dark cherry colored flooring (perfectly, may I say). With the entire
downstairs repainted a crisp white (less my one Chicago Maroon accent
wall), the contrast was made even more dramatic with the installation
of new lighting. Two can lights on a dimmer switch under the first
landing were added as a suggestion from Jimmy. Two new pendant
lights and matching stairway sconce of pewter and nickel completed the
contemporary feel of the new space.
An area that was considered marginally functional became a perfect
warm and inviting entertainment space. Now when you walk through
the front door, you feel like you could be in a trendy loft apartment in
Now that the project is complete we know without a doubt that we
hired the right contractor. The new staircase exceeded all our
expectations. It was completed ahead of schedule and on
budget?with no hidden expenses or financial surprises! Mr. Dollman
and his company?s professionals were a pleasure to work with,
responsive, caring and talented. We would not think of working with
any other contractor in the Roanoke or Blacksburg area.

    Local Handyman Services

I hired Local Handyman Services to remodel two bathrooms, a kitchen, and to install hardwood floors in my house. They were very clean, minimum dust, prompt and finished in a timely manner. They prepared a contract which had specific dates and a time frame for completion. They finished two days before the deadline. I loved my remodeled kitchen and the rest of the work that they did. I always get complements on my kitchen, on my floors, and on my bathrooms. I always recommend this company to my friends.

    GL Jeffrey's Hardwood Flooring
Gary was excellent to work with! He is very professional and businesslike. He arrived promptly for our initial appointment, gave me a prompt estimate, and explained thoroughly how the process would go. We communicated at several points before the job began, and he was always helpful and professional. He began the job promptly on June 8 and finished by June 11. It is clear that he is very knowledgeable about flooring, and takes a lot of pride in his work. He even provides photographs of his previous jobs.
One thing to note is the work hours stated in his Angies list profile. Gary arrives early and ready to go!
I will definitely use Gary again for another flooring job. We have hardwood floors throughout the house, and I only asked him to do two rooms this time. I will be contacting him again to do the rest!

We have a staircase that makes a 90 degree turn on the two bottom steps before going straight up.  I didn't want just anybody making and installing a stair runner for us.  I checked out Floored in Christiansburg as I'd heard a friend talk about them before.  Jimmie and his crew were great.  Jimmie, the owner, came out and measured the staircase along with one of the designers, Emily.  They presented us with a couple other carpet selections that we hadn't picked before.  We ended up going with a broadloom rather than a stair runner as the piecing seemed like it would be easier.
The two guys who installed the stair runner were both professional and courteous and they cleaned up well after themselves.  Jimmie came out with them when they first arrived to measure a second time before he cut and bound the piece for the bottom two steps where the turn is.  He went back to the store and did all the work and brought the piece back in plenty of time for his guys to install it.  The turn really worked out well and the carpet is matched up great.  They really did a nice job and I've gotten tons of compliments.  The runner made a huge difference on the steps and I don't worry about slipping on them any longer.
They're a bit pricey but I feel like I got a quality product and quality work.  I would hire them again.
