She did my taxes for several years. She forgot to take my mortgage deductible off from my taxes. She also on another occasion told me that I couldn't deduct my savings for a college fund for my grandchildren. After I talked to her about it, she checked into it and said that it could be deducted. She almost cost me $10,000.00. She was found guilty on two sections of the state cpa code. They didn't do anything to her about it. She was not very pleasant with me when I talked to her about it.

The firm has prepared my personal taxes for a number of years. Several years ago, I checked the return and found Ms. Roberts had neglected to list my property taxes. I called the error to her attention, she agreed it was her error and offered to cancel her fees in their entirety. When she prepared my taxes for 2007, I asked her to please assure that she was treating my having opened seven State of Virginia investment (VEST) accounts for my grandchildren properly since (1) it represented a significant amount and (2) the accounts are new. She assured me she would, but she offered an opinion that she is not overly familiar with VEST but that she believed the tax effect is limited to $2,000 for any one year. When I picked up my file for review, she verified that her opinion had been correct. At home I then reviewed the materials that accompanied my VEST applications, and made one phone call to the appropriate state official, through which I learned that the entire $14,000 amount is applicable as a state deduction. When I confronted her with this information, she said she would check. She then learned my information had been correct all along. She thanked me, stating she had "learned from me." When I picked up my adjusted forms, I asked for a private conference and requested that, as she had done before when she had made a similar (but much smaller) error, she rescind her fee. She agreed -- reluctantly. Five days later (April 11), I received a letter in which she used some percentage calculation for a reduction of fee -- $420 reduced to $320 -- and threatened that she would NOT electronically file the return until I paid the adjusted amount. I did so within hours of having received the letter. At that time, I requested a complete copy of my entire file and a copy of her fee schedule, which her letter of engagement states is free upon request. To date, I have received neither, nor have I received any verification that my return has been filed. I have sent an email and a letter to Ms. Roberts, reiterating that request and giving her notice that I intend to file a formal complaint with the Virginia Board of Accountancy. I am not questioning her fee structure, since I know only what I have been charged. I am questioning her competency and ethics.
