    Leo came and we gave him a full list of everything on our security system including the make and model of our panel. He said the $19.99 a month wouldn't work and it would be $35.00. He also said we needed a new radio and it would be $99. We agreed and had the install scheduled and paid the $99. William came and said the $99 unit wouldn't work and we needed to pay $299. We refused. He put the panel back together and left. We then noticed our heating until wasn't working. I called Ackerman and was told they weren't responsible. I explained I have a 3 year old and a 8 month pregnant wife. Leo didn't care. I had to call a heating company. It turned out the tech turned off the emergency shut off. My old system doesn't work at all and Ackerman will not do anything unless we pay the extra $200 in addition to the $99 we already paid. When we asked to be reimbursed they wanted us to mail them. This has been the worst experience we have had with any contractor.

    This is a self help install.
    They send you the stuff, you place the monitors on doors and windows.
    You then contact the company and they walk you through the start up.
    It's been over two years and I have had to call twice for system issues.
    Very responsive customer service.
    I'm pleased with the product and service.
    I sleep well at night.

    Salesman cancelled the first appointment then was pretty late for the rescheduled appointment.  ServiceTech showed up over an hour early but he did call first to say he was outside and could wait if we needed him to.  
    When I initially called about switching to their service, I thought their call center was pretty rude and informative.  
    Ultimately we decided to switch from ADT because we could get the same basic alarm service for half the cost (and both have mediocre to crummy service, so we might as well pay less for it).

    We purchased the system online and they sent it to us. We were able to do the install. The fact that it was plug and play and easy was great. They offer all the same service as other large alarm companies. If the alarm is set off, it contacts the police department.

    The system was extremely easy to install and works exactly as advertised. I was actually surprised by how complete the alarm system is. A calming voice speaks to you, if there is a message - such as you are trying to set the alarm and a door or window is open - and tells you which one to close. The siren is piercing - as advertised! Truly any window or door can be set up with the detectors. One extra I did not expect, but a pleasant chime occurs whenever you open or close a door - when the alarm is off. I have kids, so I like this. I bought a few extra detectors to cover all my windows/doors. They preprogramed my additional detectors before mailing them to me, so the whole system talks to eachother properly. I feel much safer simply knowing that if a door or window is opened - I will know about it immediately. I got this system primarily for my safety and am more interested in using it when I am home and asleep, than to protect my belongings in my absence. 
    The only slight con is that the base mode has a very bright flashing blue light - that never goes out. It lights up my entire first floor at night. My cats think they live in a disco-tech.

    Very nice, responsive staff. Received my equipment quickly and rather simple to set-up. The only oddity people should be aware of, is that the sensor pair may not attach on doors where the surrounding trim has ornate molding close to the edge (i.e. one sensor attaches to the door but the other adjoining sensor needs to attach to the trim). The sensors will have a terrible time sticking to the trim, unless you carve out the moulding so there's a 1/2 inch flat surface for it to adhere cleanly. So just fyi.

    The equipment was just as described, very easy to install and the company was extremely helpful in tailoring the security system to my home. The only thing I would change is the monthly fee, which is $40+/month. This is why I'm giving a "B" for price; the equipment itself was very reasonable. There are many less expensive monitoring options available these days. But as far as the equipment and the company itself, I couldn't be happier.

    Overall, it went very well.  
    First, I have to applaud 1st Security for their Customer Service.  Every time I called, I talked to someone live.  No automated walk throughs, and no please stay on the line until the next available operator.  My security consultant was Kelly Schauf, and he was just a pleasure to do business with. He answered all my questions, and got my order processed through with no issues at all. Very friendly, and just completely professional from top to bottom.  1st Security should immediately give this guy a pay raise, because he's earned it.  
    Chris Poor, our installer, arrived on time.  At first, I didn't know it was him, because apparently 1st Security installers have to drive their personal vehicles.  That, to me, was pretty low budget and really lacks professionalism IMO.  If you're a security company, your image should be important to you, and a personal vehicle with no indication at all that the driver is a representative of 1st Security just isn't all that professional to me.  Then, Chris gets out and smokes a cigarette.  Again, just not professional, and I don't care for cigarette odor in my house.  Not a huge deal to me, but it could be to someone else, so it's worth mentioning. Beyond that, Chris was friendly and good at his job.  We had 19 window contacts, four door contacts, three smoke detectors, and two glass breakage sensors installed.  To go along with one main control box on the first floor, and an auxiliary control box that we keep in our bedroom.  We like it because you can either mount it to the wall or keep it portable.  We keep it portable.  All it needs is an electric outlet to operate.  The installation took a few hours, but appeared to be flawless.  After testing the sensors and getting us all set up on www.alarm.com, Chris was out the door after we didn't have any further questions.  
    An hour or so later, I picked up my home phone, and there was no dial tone.  I knew this had to do with the alarm installation, so I called Chris (who had given us his phone # if we had any questions/problems)...  He told me that the likely culprit was a phone junction where my old ADT system and been hooked up in my basement.  He led me through some steps in changing where some wires were connected to the phone junction, but nothing was working, and then we got disconnected.  I was a bit irritated, and sent Kelly Schauf an email.  Not long after, he replied via email and said a manager would be calling me.  A little while later, Larry the manager called me back, told me exactly what I had to do with two specific wires, and just like that, my phone was back in service.  Excellent customer service all around there!!
    We have had our service now for a little over a week, and we have had no problems at all.  We get our alerts when our system is armed and disarmed, and we like how each family member can get their own code, so when I get an alert, I know who's arming or disarming the system.  The system itself is a touch screen system, and it couldn't be any easier to use.  I was an ADT customer for nearly twenty years, but I'm happy to be with 1st Security now.  
    A couple of Guardian Security yard signs and a handful of Guardian window stickers were included.  Also, covers for the smoke detectors if/when you have a contractor doing work where a lot of dust is created.  A great idea, because our alarm was set off by a contractor a few years ago, and a trusted neighbor who has our code had to to rush over and turn it off.  
    NOTE:  1st Security does the installation and any repair work the system may need.  Guardian does the 24 hour monitoring.
