    AJ Building Contractor, LLC
AJ Building Contractors did a wonderful job. They showed us floor plan options on our laptop. They took care of the blueprints and permits. They did excellent work and made sure we were happy with everything. We will be using them again for future work next year. Very nice people to work with.

Arthur and his amazing crew are well in the midst of putting on a large addition to our home and renovating existing spaces. This is a difficult process and Arthur has been excellent to work with! He knows we have a strict budget and is very open and honest about pricing, so we can make informed decisions. As can happen in all additions on old homes, we ran into an issue. Arthur informed us right away and we feel confident did the best he could to remedy our situation and ensure our family's safety. When I changed our kitchen layout, Arthur spent hours listening to me, talking about options and ultimately helping me find a layout that will work best for my family's needs. I am also very impressed with his crew and with the specialist whom he contracts ( such as his plumber and electrician). I know the main crew of guys by name. They are easy to talk with and professional. We have moved out (as these project are a lot messier than you anticipate). I work near my home and come by to check in at random times throughout the day. The guys are always working hard! Honestly, I can't say enough good things about AJ Building Contractors. I am confident that my home will be completed in a reasonable time frame and will look beautiful.

Arthur takes the the time to explain how certain construction methods and specific materials he chooses will contribute to the lasting quality of the house. He is easy to work with, has great ideas and was always available for any questions about the house. He clearly cares about his clients and his work. This house passed the home inspection with flying colors.

    Bryan Construction Group inc
Bryan Construction does great work because theyre great people. After several meetings in the early spring of 2018, we contracted with Bryan Construction, and were so grateful we did. First, the build: we lived in a 1940s brick home in Arlington, and we were planning an extensive renovation that expanded THREE floors. Digging out and expanding the basement, extending the main floor, and putting on a master bedroom suite on the top floor. Oh, and a shed. And a patio. And a deck. (And a balcony.) We also had a relatively tight timeline. We broke ground in early June, but my wife and I were planning to have both of our families visit for Christmas, for the first time ever, all under one roof. So the degree of difficulty was high. First, the price was right. They didnt just win the bid on the price, which was great, but on their enthusiasm and can-do attitude. Im leery of extreme optimism with contractors, but Bryan Construction were immaculate with their word and really delivered. We held monthly meetings with the owners, foreman, architect, and office support, though we reached out to the owners all the time. They werent just professional, they were warm, reassuring, and always helpful. Problems and complications always arise in a build of this magnitude, but they managed everything quickly and gracefully. Remember, we stipulated that the build had to take six months. They quoted us at six months (and though you always add a buffer, they literally came in at SIX MONTHS.) There were times when the process moved so quickly, I was the one slowing them down. Ive mentioned the price and the speed and the ease of working with Bryan, but all of that would be meaningless if the quality isnt top notch. The quality was amazing. After living in a decade in a very cute but very modest 1940s brick home, I am still pinching myself at the wonderland Bryan Construction created for us. The new rooms and designs are gorgeous, the amenities are first class, and what was once an unmanageable slope of a backyard is now a private wonderland, complete with a deck, a patio with terraced retaining walls, and garden boxes. I pinch myself that I get to live here. So, long story short, my wife and I love Bryan Construction. Spoilers: they came in on time, at price, and were overjoyed with our new home, which is twice the size it used to be. Spoilers: we had a wonderful holiday with both of our families, but the week before, we threw a party for Bryan to say thank you. Some people in your lives, you just click with. We clicked with Bryan Construction with Steve, Amadeo, Guillermo, Neftali, Simeon, the whole crew. They were all wonderful to a person. (Oh they are all Byran employees, so everything is in-house no subcontractors. That really makes a difference!) For six months, they were here everyday and they were like family, and we love them still.

    Lakewood Home Builders Inc
We had a major house fire which ended up being a gut-rebuild and I went general contractor shopping. I saw reviews, interviewed five GCs and ultimately went with Lakewood. I'm so glad I did and I am a big advocate not just of their end product but the process. When you work with a GC, you're in a relationship with them. We had a great experience with Lakewood. Here are some examples why: 1. Tim, one of the partners, was an adjuster in his past and was able to help navigate the insurance world with ease without me having to be in the middle. His knowledge in giving an initial estimate, in negotiating and sharing facts with our insurance company made me feel that I was in good hands. He was an advocate. I would trust them to give me sound advice. 2. I wanted to use Google Sheets to track items I purchased vs. them. They embraced the change and indulged me in my method. This showed a lot of flexibility. 3. Lance manages the heck out of the projects he's on. He's a no BS guy--straight talker and doesn't sugar coat stuff. If it can be done, they'll tell you. If it can't, they aren't wishy washy and tell you as it is. He's at the job at 6am marking and planning for the work that needs to be done that day. He organizes a varied team of contractors that do the various trades (plumbing, electric, etc). 4. They give you the time. Projects get done before they say they will get done. They take on what they're able to manage and they are good guys. For them to be profitable, they need to use several sub contractors for trades efficiently. They make sure to plan who they need effectively. 5. A GC's work product is only as good as the work that they get done through contractors. The contractors that Lakewood uses are kind, they speak English (which was useful for me), do good quality work, and they work hard. I saw them working through weekends, late into the night, and generally seemed happy to be working for Lance. 6. The pace at which they work is great but it was a challenge for me to keep up with. Since our house was a full re-build, I was often the bottleneck in making design or product decisions. You pay for what you get. Lakewood will be competitive in pricing but they will be the higher of the options that you may have in front of you. But keep in mind that the price you pay is not just for a quality end product, but also for your trust (they take great care of your home/ area), for good advice and guidance (peace of mind), and for the experience (it's painless). So go ahead, swipe right. All the best! x-post on Google and Angies

    Fairfax Contractor
Glen cares first and foremost about the customer being happy. He gives sound advice with respect to approaching each project, provides reasonable estimates, and is very responsive to questions and concerns as the project progresses. Importantly, he totally stands behind his work, and should something go wrong, he fixes it. I am very particular about hiring contractors to work on my home, and after Glen started doing projects for me, I called no one else.

    Karbyte Contracting LLC
This was our second time working with Joseph and his Karbyte team. Last year, they completely rebuilt our master bathroom. Because we were so satisfied with the master bathroom rebuild, this year we hired them to renovate our guest bathroom from top to bottom. We also had them install recessed lighting in our living room and build an entryway shelving unit. The work is top-notch, the crew is excellent, and the results speak for themselves.

    Vale Home Improvement LLC
My project was adding a second story onto the 1950s era 2 bedroom 1 bath portion of my house in Arlington VA. Somewhere around 2010 the previous owners added on a master bedroom / bath and sitting room bringing the house up to 3 beds / 2 baths and around 1800sf, the second floor addition (the subject of this review) brought the house up to just under 3,000sf and 5 beds, 3 baths. The Good: Vale's price came in below the next lowest bid. I was surprised at the time because I had been getting preliminary pricing and Vale and another contractor were very close, with the other being just under Vale's price. However, once we had the bid drawings done and held a pre-bid meeting, the other contractor attended the meeting complaining about rapid price escalation in construction materials and tacked on a big increase in his price. Vale was the only contractor that agreed to let us stay in the house as much as possible. Alfredo (Vale's owner), said that it might only be a day here or there when they needed to take the power down or shut water off that we would need to be out of the house. As it turned out, we stayed in the house the entire time, confining ourselves to the master bed / bath (this was not part of the house getting the addition) and the majority of the kitchen. To their credit, Vale showed up nearly every working day (until towards the end) and sometimes on weekends to catch up. Unfortunately, it was rare to see Alfredo supervising the crews and there was no foreman in charge when Alfredo wasn't there. However, they did work hard, for example, when the trusses were delivered, they were unable to lift them over the temporary power line to the house. To my amazement Vale had them placed on the ground and then raised them by hand onto the framed walls of the second story. In my opinion, lifting 33' long trusses 20' vertically was a herculean task, but they did it without complaint. The Bad: If what you're looking for with your contractor is a lot of communication and collaboration, look elsewhere. For example, the detailed schedule I had written into the contract for Vale to provide turned out to be Alfredo coming over to borrow a piece of paper and writing down what he thought would happen every week or two. This set the tone of things - basically, don't get worked up about things happening according to a specific timeline, don't expect a lot of information coming your way, but trust me things will get done. My architect had shown a 20" overhang around the perimeter of the roof. The front and back were set by the length of the trusses, but the sides had to be framed on-site to the appropriate dimension. After the trusses were framed I realized they were only 12". Alfredo or a foreman on site would have caught that problem before the trusses were set, but they went up unchecked. Alfredo's solution to the problem was to tack on two more 2x4's to the sides, which brought the overhang to about 15". While I wasn't crazy about the compromise and I wasn't asked to approve, I didn't protest any further. Our plans showed a band of white PVC trim right above the windows on the first floor, however, Vale installed the trim higher and exposed the old wood lintels above the windows that had been covered over for 60 years. The old wood was not attractive and stuck out like a sore thumb. Vale wound up just painting all of them without filling or sanding any of them. It looks better than before, but not as good as I hoped or what was in the plans. Also, the wood floor installation was substandard. There are more highly visible nail marks on these floors than any I've ever seen, and they stand in stark contrast to the hardwood on the first floor where nail marks are hard to find. This is particularly noticeable on the stair nosing where some of the marks are large and not at all the same color as the wood. I've asked Alfredo to fix at least the stair nosing, but he has not yet responded. Bottom Line: If you're looking for a lower-priced construction solution with a crew that will get things done and you don't mind not having much communication or collaboration, Vale Home Improvement is a great option. If money is not a problem and you want comprehensive communication and creative, collaborative solutions, you may want to look elsewhere.

Overall we were pleased with the end job. As home renos go, there were a few unexpected issues that arose, which we were able to work through. His crew is top notch. We lived in our house during the renovation and they could not have been more courteous.

Excellent work, completed on schedule and reasonable costs. Great communication and experience. Would definitely hire again and recommend. Rafael and team built a shed dormer, installed a bathroom, and also renovated an old bathroom for us. Once permits were ready, the whole thing took less than 2 months.
