Dr. Angel VanWagenen was my counsellor initially, and reassured and helped me better understand the dynamics in myself and my marriage. She always listened intently, was never judgmental or critical, yet always insightful, professional and constructive. Following her absence for maternity leave I have transitioned to Dr. Iren Valentine, a superb active listener who always seems to know just when and how to ask a salient question, never passing judgement and always provoking thought. Their website at [*** Link removed ***] provides a very faithful overview of the practice's approach to therapy.

My husband had a long (10+) year relationship with a psychiatrist at this practice, and it was generally fine. Recently, however, the psychiatrist left the practice, but neither the psychiatrist nor the mental health department nor the hospital notified us -- they dumped a long-term patient without a word of warning! When my husband called to schedule his next regular appointment, he was told sorry, you don't have a doctor here any more. When he asked if his files were transferred to a new doctor, they said no. Furthermore, they said, none of their doctors were taking new patients anyway. So suddenly my husband needed to find a new psychiatrist on short notice. No apologies were forthcoming - it was just "I've told you what I can, you'll need to find a new doctor now." And when my husband asked if someone could call in a refill of his medication while he looked for a new doctor, they said no, you need a doctor to prescribe medication, and you don't have a doctor here any longer. Long story short -- don't use this practice unless you're willing to risk being unceremoniously dumped without even a final prescription refill as thanks for a 10-year relationship.

    Churchill, Dr. Matthew R
We have been to him only a hand full of times but he has been so very thoughtful, patient, attentive and concerned. He is very good with problem solving. His staffing is good too. I like them all but I have not a whole of experience. He has good ideas in testing and he accommodates dad’s disability very resourcefully. Dad can’t get on the table and he says we will find another way, we will do this or that, and with dad I never know what to expect anymore. He is thoughtful, sensitive and someone who listens actively to what you have to say on what your complaints are. He discovered my dad has neurological problem in the feet which is part of the problem with his instability in standing now.

Things are progressing along nicely with Dr. Shore's help.  We have visited other mental health professionals in the past, but have become discouraged by their "bedside manner" (watching the clock, seeming distracted during a visit, etc.) and sometimes it is hard to continue treatment.  With Dr. Shore, this has never been a problem -- she really is a joy to spend time with.  I cannot recommend Dr. Shore highly enough.

He is a very good psychiatrist. He obviously does prescribe medication and will give you what he thinks you will need. We had some minor communication problems at the beginning. He gave me some medicine that helps you stay asleep and I needed medicine that would help me go to sleep. But he is willing to try different things and is a good listener. He does take a lot of notes.

    Bir, Dr. Christopher
Dr. Bir has some excellent insights into child psychiatry. We have seen him on and off over the years. He is rarely on time for his appointments, but that's the only real negative. He cares a great deal about his patients -- and will always give the time needed (which is often why he's late for the next appointments). He has good instincts and works hard.

My partner and I went for a first appointment in the hopes of finding a couples counselor.  Ms. Williams has a particular approach she uses, which sounded fine, but when I asked a question about its applicability in certain situations, she did not listen to my concerns, just ran right over me with how this is THE way to do things.  I tried a couple times to make my point understood, but she was not interested in listening to me (when we walked out, the first thing my partner said was that she had been just mowing me down).  And then she said "Don't you want to become closer as a couple?" suggesting that the mere fact that I didn't see its applicability in all circumstances meant I did not want to be closer as a couple.  I don't feel that she'd be a good listener.

Dr. Book is probably one of the best psychiatrists out there because he has common sense as well as knowledge. He listens to his patients and works with his patients and truly understands that just because one medication works this way for one person, it doesn't work this way for another person.

    Rothbaum, Dr. Kenneth
He does not take insurance, but he is very affordable (around $200 for talk therapy appointments and $100 for shorter medication follow -ups).  I found it was very difficult to find a metro-accessible psychiatrist in DC who takes my insurance, so I decided to bite the bullet and pay for the appointments out-of-pocket.  He definitely helped me through a rough patch and prescribed the appropriate medication.  I've always been skeptical about talk therapy -- it doesn't really do a whole lot for me -- but he didn't push it too much.  I just see him for medication management now.  Probably one of the most affordable psychiatrists in downtown DC, if you are not using insurance.

They are prompt and I never have to wait. I have never waited more than five minutes. They schedule their appointments nicely. The particular that I started with retired but I see the physician's assistant there. She is just as nice as she can be. I never feel rushed or hurried.
