    Don's Garage Inc
Anyone with a good review of this place is either related to the owner or knows nothing about vehicles. My son is a college student near Abingdon VA. He was having trouble with his car running hot. We searched the web for a garage with good reviews and convenient location. He found Don's Garage. I contacted the garage and spoke with an employee while my son was there with the car (I am two states away.) I explained to the employee that the car had been running hot and the radiator was frequently low on fluid. I explained, in detail, that I had knowledge of vehicles and not to do any repair to the vehicle until they had called me back and explained the diagnosis. If I felt like I was getting jerked around, I would happily pay the fee for the diagnostic and look elsewhere. Nearly a week later, after several phone calls full of lies and promises to have the, "guy that looked at it," call me back, they called my son and told him the car was ready. He called me from the garage and said that it is finished and I owe them $216. I had only agreed to a $40 diagnostic that would be waived if I decided to have the car worked on there. I asked to speak to the owner and he finally got on the phone. He told me that the total was for 4 spark plugs and an oil change. The car was there for neither of those reasons and if it were, that would be about $100 too much anyway, even after labor. A diagnostic had not even been done for the overheating issue. I began to voice my complaints and he began to explain how he would hold the car hostage unless I paid the bill. After much deliberation I begrudgingly told my son to take the car to another garage and agreed to pay the highway robbers the money they were stealing from me. My son called the next day and informed me that the car had overheated and blown a head gasket on the way home from the garage and he'd called emergency roadside assistance to take it right back to Don's garage. I called the garage numerous times over the next week before someone would speak to me about it. They did not offer to make any concessions for their sabotage of my son's car. I really believe that they drained the fluid from the radiator so that it would blow up after he left and they could stick us with a huge repair bill. The owner said they would buy a new motor for it for about $4,600 and the labor for it would be $1,200-$1,500. And that's all he could do. I was forced to borrow a truck, drive 400 miles, rent a car dolly and pull the car back home. While at the garage, the owner (whom is not named Don btw,) was a total jerk to me and my 72yo father that accompanied me. When I asked why the overheating problem wasn't addressed when that was the purpose for the diagnostic, he replied, "How the f**k am I supposed to stop a car from overheating if the mother f***er doesn't overheat when it's here?" When I asked for the key to the vehicle he walked in the garage and retrieved the key from the board behind the counter, came out and threw it at the ground toward my feet. He told me if I didn't like the way he does business, don't f***ing come back. I took the car home and had it repaired for $1800. All of this could have been avoided if they had done their jobs properly and replaced a radiator hose or a water pump. Instead, they tried to rip off a young kid away from home because they didn't think his daddy would drive all the way down there to get the car. If you take your car to these scoundrels you will get ripped off. Don't chance it.

    C & S Auto Inspection
I went with my daughter when she had her car inspected. This man was very polite, looked my daughter in the eyes when he spoke and treated her with respect. He checked the car very carefully and was very sincere.

Without an appointment, I found this great garage!  I asked if I needed an appointment, the man said no, asked for the keys and went out to get my car.  I looked around the waiting room a bit, then began to get comfortable with some paperwork I'd brought with me for the wait.  I barely got it out and opened up when he was calling me to let me know it was finished!  He did NOT try to sell me stuff I did not need; my car was inspected and I was on my merry way in about twenty minutes.  Phenomenal!

    AUTOCARE TIRES & SVC II
I have taken 2 cars to their Abingdon location for service a few times a year over the last 10 years. I?ve had very good luck with the mechanics, and believe them to be honest and trustworthy.  Their inspector is especially knowledgeable.  The owners? son ?Junior? is a good mechanic as well, but I believe he no longer works at the Abingdon location.  (Autocare has a shop in Bristol, as well).
The issue I have is with the front office staff.  There has been a revolving door of people who have worked at the shop in the last 10 years.  It is very rare to see the same person twice.  In the summer of 2011 the front office employee actually made fun of me for having backed over a curb at night while traveling in an unfamiliar town.  He said ?tell me that curb wasn?t coming at you?.  While my car was being serviced, I overheard him making disparaging remarks about female drivers to other customers. The mechanic overheard and was apologetic.  I did not complain knowing he wouldn?t last long.
My most recent experience at Autocare was last week, and I was more disappointed than ever by their new front office person.  This was a young lady by the name of Lindsay who appeared to be between 20 and 25.  After telling me about her recent vacation in Florida, she tried to convince me to have 3 types of maintenance done that were completely unnecessary.
I took my Nissan to Autocare for 3 things:  to have a brake light replaced, my rear view mirror repaired/replaced, and finally to have my brakes checked before the upcoming winter.  After my car was taken into the bay, Lindsay told me that I needed additional services.  She strongly recommended I have the transmission fluid changed, the radiator flushed, and the spark plugs replaced.
Transmission fluid:  I advised Lindsay that the dealership had replaced the transmission during the spring of this year.  She replied that, if that was so, there could be a problem elsewhere in the transmission system.  I then shared with her that Nissan had actually replaced the entire transmission and transmission control module under extended warranty.  She relented.  I checked the transmission fluid later and did not find it to be discolored or smell odd.
Radiator flush:  I told her I would consider this and review my maintenance records.  When I did check them later that evening, I found that I had this service performed 14 months ago.  I really wanted to give this young woman the benefit of the doubt, so I purchased an antifreeze tester the next day (looks like a turkey baster with floating balls).  My coolant is just fine.
Spark plug replacement:  This was probably the most ridiculous suggestion.  My Nissan has 86600 miles on it and runs like a charm. The maintenance guide does not recommend replacement until 100,000 miles. I still feel insulted.
Back to the services I had actually asked for.  Lindsay quoted me a price for the rear view mirror (and confirmed that the trustworthy mechanic had obtained the quote).  She told me she could have it there the next day, which seemed a bit soon.  Believing her, I scheduled an appointment for 10:00 AM.  I gave her both my home and cell phone numbers and asked me to call if it did not arrive.  She assured me that she would be working and would call if any problems.  I arrived the next day and was greeted by a very apologetic mechanic.  The mirror had not arrived, and Lindsay had not arrived to work either.  The mechanic was kind enough to call the Bristol shop and track the mirror down.
I?m very concerned that on 11/29/13, Autocare recommended not one, not two, but three unnecessary services.  They could easily be convincing less knowledgeable customers to have unneeded work done.  I do believe that the mechanics are trustworthy,
however the scores of front office people they?ve had over the years have not always been honest or professional.  While I have no way of knowing, I've speculated that their compensation may be based on the services they sell.  The only way I could recommend Autocare to others is with the suggestion that potential customers speak directly to the mechanics.

SAM SNEAD TIRE & RECAPPING INC
They are always wonderful! I try to make an appointment whenever I can, but if I need to just drop by and they always take care of me in a prompt and gracious manner.
And in the summer, If you want to go tubling down any of the three gorgeous river forks in Abingdon, Sam's usually has inner tubes that they will give you for a quite nominal fee... if not free.
They have taken great care of me for 30 years.

    Farmer's Auto Repair Center
They were so patient!  I had to save for nearly six months to pay the bill - which, by the way, they worked with me to keep as low as possible.  They had the car on their lot all that time and didn't charge me a dime for storage.
This is a father & son business, and they take great pride in their work.  They also have a towing service that is both prompt and fairly priced.
Tell them I said "hello"!  They are such nice folks.

As always, it was prompt and professional service, and I even got hugs before I left!  (After all,I am the Official Town Hugger for Historic Abingdon, Virginia!  But they would hug you, too, if you needed one.  They are all so nice and welcoming.)
Were it not for these wonderful gentlemen, I would have spent a fortune over the past 30 years keeping my cars on the road.  They are the only people in Abingdon that I trust to keep my vehicles in perfect condition, and know that they would never overcharge me just because I am a female who know nothing about motors, etc..
Before buying a used Volvo several years go, I took it to them for their diagnosis and advice.  They gave it an A+ -- and since then we've put neatly 250,000 miles on it!

    YARBER BROTHERS TIRE CO
Yarber Tire and their staff can be trusted.
We have bought tires from them for over 7 years and have never had any issues. They offer good prices and quality tires. They back their work and are excellent mechanics. They are mechanics who ensure it is done correctly the first time and do not do anything unless it is necessary.
We have another set of tires we are buying from them next month. We will continue to go to them as long as they are open.
