  • I am happy with the wonderful gate constructed by Jim Hall and his crew from Down To Earth Landscaping. It is sturdy and will last for a long time. The crew worked hard all day to complete the work. Jim made suggestions to improve on the older gate, solving problems we had with it sagging. He is a good craftsman and very knowledgeable, skilled in solving a problem that was not anticipated, and very professional. The price was good, within our budget. We highly recommend this business.

  • Marcus is great. He and his crew did an excellent job. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. His prices are reasonable and fair. I hired him for a one time clean up. After I saw his work, I hired him bi-weekly to maintain my yard. I highly recommend Marcus. The reason I paid him $210 was because there was a ton of leafs from numerous oak trees on my property. And he trimmed numerous bushes which had not been trimmed for 6 months.

  • We use Mow Managers for our lawn care.  They were here March of 2017.  They cut the lawn every two weeks.  It costs I think $37.  I have used them for a few years.  They are very prompt.  They come and they mow and sweep off the sidewalks.  They are very professional.  There prices are reasonable.  I don't talk to them.  They come, they cut, they leave.  They are very fast and know how to mow the yard.  There are two workers that come to do the work each time.

  • Extremely well. Jim and his crew arrived early and went to work immediately. Jim did the initial landscaping work so he knew what plants needed to be trimmed back and how much. When the crew finished we walked the area to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. This is the 3rd year I've used Down to Earth Landscaping and I will use them again in the future.

  • My fairly large landscape area was in need of a good clean up after the winter season. I called Down-to-Earth Landscaping and spoke to the owner, James Hall. I've used this company the previous two years and have been extremely pleased with their work. Jim came out the day after I called, listened to what I wished to have done, provided me with a few additional thoughts and quoted me a fair price. Jim has several crews working for him, so a crew of two arrived the very next morning and began working. What I really like about this company is that Jim assigns the number of workers to complete the job in one day, two at the most. The landscaped area was cleaned up, some existing plants were cut back to allow for new growth, some plants were relocated, and some new plants were introduced. New mulch was laid down to the entire landscaped area as well to areas around the front and side of the house. As I've already mentioned, this is the third year that I've had Down-to Earth Landscaping care for my yard and as before I am extremely pleased with the work. Great job!

  • Company Name: RANDOLPH LAWN MAINTENANCECategory: LandscapingServices Performed: Yes* More Weight is given to a review where work has been completed.Work Completed Date: October 15, 2015Hire Again: NoApproximate Cost: $4,500.00Description Of Work: Prepared and sodded back and side yard and lawn maintenance
Member Comments: Review of Randolph?s Landscaping in San Antonio, TX:
Chris was up in our face / texting threatening and accusing us of all sorts of things
including not paying the bill two days after we received it.  He remembered the job was finished two months
previously but failed to acknowledge or remember that we didn?t receive a bill for over two months.  We asked about the
bill a month after he finished the job and then again.
I need to add that the final bill presented to us by Randolph's lawn & Landscape Maintenance.
This is odd because we paid the company immediately that installed the sprinkler system that was almost 1/2 again as much as the installation of the sod.
We had ongoing communication problems with Chris.
For example what we asked him to do face to face wasn?t always communicated to Susanne and Samantha, i.e. I would call and they would say that Chris hadn?t told them.  We had asked him to maintain our lawn and gave Randolph?s landscaping specific instructions on what we wanted them to do.  These instructions weren?t followed and we had to reach out to the office on multiple occasions.  Going forward sometimes what we requested was done and sometimes it wasn?t, but we were still charged the same amount.  We received multiple excuses from Chris and Randolph?s as to why someone didn?t show up when they
were supposed to or something we requested didn?t get done.   I realize things happen in business, but not
    repeatedly.
    ·       When we first met we told Chris that cost was important to us and I asked if he gave military discounts and was told:
    o
    That he gave a 10%
discount for military and senior citizens...None of the estimates nor invoices we received show a 10% discount.  If he had given a discount it would have been noted on the estimate or invoice.  He claims he gave it off of the estimate, but I have no record to if.
    o
The military discount wasn?t given on the original estimate
    or on the final bill
    o
Based on that, the bill should be $457 less than the total
    of $4,578.98
    ·       In Estimate 1351 he gave us
specific instructions as to how to water and take care of new sod.  I believed he should have known what we need to do
the instructions.  Some of our grass went into shock and died.  I asked Moore Landscaping who installed the sprinkler system to come out and tell us why the grass seemed to be dying.  He checked our watering schedule and asked who told us to water only one time per day and that new sod needed to be watered 3 times per day in order for it to take hold.  He made the correction.  We were told this 2-3 weeks after the grass had been laid in.
    ·       In estimate 1375 we had two
separate charges for metal edging, installation and the removal of two crepe
    myrtles.
    o
We were told initially it would take 30?.  Later that was corrected and he indicated it
would be a total of 90?
§  On the estimate we were charged for 30? and 90? of metal edging, and installation.  That is 30? / $97.50 more than we should have been charged
    ·       I believe that the charges
should have been reduced by $97.50
    ·       He was asked to trim the
    shrubs in the front flowerbed
    o
Randolph?s landscaping didn?t provide us an estimate but given our
experience with Randolph?s and others we didn?t expect $250 for 2-3 hours worth
of work ($80-90/hr).  We were expecting
    $25-35-40/hr.  I don?t consider what
Randolph?s did as major shrub trimming.
    A reasonable charge given
    other charges would be $120.00
    ·       I asked on several occasions if when the gardeners were mowing the yard and trimming outside of the
flowerbeds if they could use the gas trimmer and trim the grass that was
growing from the lawn into the flowerbed...might have taken 30-40 minutes.
    o
A separate crew was sent out and it took them 1-2 hours to edge and
remove the grass that was growing into the flowerbed...nothing to do with
    weeding.
    §  This was a $30-60 job based
on other hourly charges by Randolph?s previous charges and our experience.
    ·       I believe a reasonable charge would have been $60.

    As a comparison Randolph?s charged $135.00 + jackhammer rental for 4-6 hours
$35-40/hr. of intensive labor using a jackhammer to remove a concrete ring and
patio slab.... this took much more time than trimming shrubs and removing grass
along the inside edge of the front flowerbed...I use the above as a comparison
    only.

Given the above the final bill would have been:
    $4,578.98
    - 457.00  Military discount
    - 60.00  Redefine flowerbed edge (removing grass that had grown into bed)
    - 97.50  Charge for 30? of metal edging that wasn?t used
-120.00  Charge for trimming shrubs in front flowerbed
$3,844.48 Should have been the final invoice based on my review and the military discount we were told we would get from Chris

  • This is the 2nd year that I used the services of "Down to Earth Landscaping". Jim and his crew are professional and very meticulous. Landscaping and mulch spreading is tiresome, backbreaking and get down and dirty work and Jim works right along side his crew in getting soiled. Our beautiful landscaped area that Jim created last year was being run over with weeds and the plants were overgrowing. Jim returned my call the same day and came over the following day to see what needed to be done. Because this is the busiest time of the year for him, it would be two weeks before he would be able to do the work. He quoted me a very fair price for the amount of work that needed to be done. One of the things that I really like about "Down to Earth Landscaping" is that they get the job done quickly. Jim has a crew large enough that once the work starts, it's usually completed in a day or two at the most. I am extremely pleased with the work done and will continue to use this company in the future.

  • He called promptly after I left a voice mail. He and 2 employees came out when they said they would. Lee's Lawn did MORE than expected and was knowledgable about landscaping problems and solutions. He was very knowledgable about the sudden "green" explosion in my backyard...said it was "blue grass" and told me it would disappear during the summer. Also told me the reason my front lawn was mostly dead was because of grubs and explained why...they destroy the root system of grass. We talked about the solution and he recommended nematodes as a "green", non-toxic solution which I liked very much. He told me when and how to do that. We discussed planting sod in the front yard early spring, after we treat for grubs.
I didn't ask him to pull weeds in the front planting beds, but I was happy he did, and he didn't charge me extra.

  • Initial problem:  couldn't keep dirt around foundation of a house that had foundation leveling 5 years ago, and again 3.5 years ago.  After trying many things, including gutters, and getting many other recommedations (one being: cover it all in concrete!) I called on Jim to get a landscaping perspective.  He had many good ideas that no one had come up with before, and they all made sense.  Lucky for me he'd just had a large job delayed and could start the next day.  Hired him on the spot with a handshake.  He and his crew were always very professional.  As this was a rental house, I was not onsite all the time, but every time I stopped by I was pleased with the progression of work and how tidy they were considering the scope of the project.  Big pluses in my book:  dirt had washed out from under both the driveway and the patio and Jim suggested blowing mortar under both to give them stability and keep them from further cracking or collapsing;  they also took care of raising the sewer line clean out and the sprinkler heads without me having to hire someone else; on one area near the patio I suggested replacing the plants with sod. Jim asked if the tenants would water the sod daily... something that hadn't even occurred to me, and of course they wouldn't, so he used river rock in that area also.  In areas where we needed to move the water away from the house he also used plastic under the river rock instead of the landscaping cover that is porous.  Again, something I wouldn't have thought of.  I was so pleased with their work that I also took advantage of an offer he had going for one day of yard clean up for an additional $500.  This is a BIG yard with a large xeriscaped area on a STEEP hill that hadn't been pruned in several years.  It was much more than a one day job, even for a crew of 3, but they did an amazing job in that one day - it no longer looked like a jungle.  I was amazed to stop by that day and see that my fan palm had a trunk - hadn't been able to see it for years.   Wish I'd had enough money to hire them for a second day to finish everything!
The ONLY negative I found in working with Jim is he usually works on his word and a handshake.  Since this is a rental house I needed something in writing from him.  The invoice he sent me wasn't as professional as it might have been, but it should be enough for the IRS if I ever get audited.  On the plus side, he was willing to do this for me even though it's not his norm to do so, AND he did it in a timely fashion.
He also told me that if this doesn't solve the problem, to get back in touch with him... if some of the river rock areas are retaining water for any reason he could drill holes through the mortar in the retaining walls to provide drainage.  It left me feeling that he was invested in the solution and he would be there if it isn't solved 100%.
I can't wait till I have enough money to hire him at MY house.  He's much too good to only use on rentals!

  • They're very responsive. They come on the day they're supposed to. If I have any issues, they take care of it right away. They just really good. They just work out well. As far as I know, they're right on line with everybody else.
