Does a Painting Estimate Really Matter?

Interior Painting reviews in Whitehouse

    Ratliff Painting & Repair
I'm the owner of Floors & Interiors in Whitehouse and Tyler, and I recently needed someone who could do repairs on a home of one of our customers. I've know and used Tony Ratliff on jobs and have found him to be very reliable and easy to work with. On this recent job he responded quickly and did a great job for the people. I'm always reluctant to recommend someone due to it being a reflection on me, however, I don't worry about that with Tony Ratliff.

Excellent price & communication. Tony Ratliff lives right across the street from now for 10 years. He has been a big help with our home construction projects giving us advice on who to hire & what to look out for. Can see a post by someone else about Tony who is in our neighborhood & that person should know it is illegal to have pigs in the city limits plus I have called in when they are out & eating trash on the street. Don't know if the chickens are legal but that sure is a lot to ask a neighbor sharing a chain link fence to tolerate. Pigs & chickens good grief.

Tony's crew was always here right on time and worked very hard all day. They always kept me informed of what they were doing during the time they were here. The end product is amazing! Our game room went from ugly 80's to a beautiful upgraded room that I can't wait to show off! The drywall repair looks great too! I will definitely be using them again!

Slow.  Promising work and completed most of it.  Asking for another partial payment when he was clearly told that (after 2 partial payments) there would be no more until he completed the job and my inspector checked his work.  Today, 9/14 he says if I don't give him more, he will not complete the work.
Sorry, but that is blackmail and I will not submit to it.
I THINK the work he has done to date is satisfactory, and I will be happy to pay him his balance due if he will just finish the job so I can get it inspected.
Very unprofessional and emotionally dramatic man that I will not play emotional games with.  In fact, he tried to convince my wife to undermine me as his primary contact person, and told her that he would have to seek legal recourse for non payment.  This is really weird, since we have already paid him twice.
Paid to date is $2500, due is $935. Now why ask for $50 today and play games threatening not completing the work if he is not paid?
I can not put a rating on the quality work without a final inspection of it.
We have given the contractor a week to contact us and to finish his work.  As of this date, 9/20/15 he has not.  I have scheduled my inspector to go into the attic and inspect the work done there as well as inside the house.  Depending on his inspection, I am willing to pay him for what he has done.

I questioned his charges which included about 100 gallons of paint for a 1425 SF brick home (inside and outside, plus primer).  He stated he was doing "a professional job" and using 4 coats of paint in all areas.  My home was vacant, completely empty and clean when he started his work.  A year later, all paint (except wall paint) was peeling and an inspection revealed drip marks and several areas not painted throughout the house.  He painted over items rather than cover the items.  When confronted with this problem he came out a reviewed his work, agreed it was not well done and agreed to redo it.  He never followed through with this promise to redo his work and now refuses to return emails and phone calls.

I believe reviews are best when the context of the job and the reviewer are given, so I'll start there.
I know carpentry very well. Ran a framing/finish crew in the early 90s and built many of Tyler's nicest and biggest homes during that time (too many to count). I also grew up around the residential home building industry in Tyler, though I haven't swung a hammer in many years. The point is that I know how to do it myself, and the difference between "good", "bad" and "lazy", and have high expectations based on experience. I actually had replaced about 3/4 of the cornice/fascia board on the front of my house before calling Tony, but realized I just don't have time to do that kind of thing myself any longer. However, I always feel nervous that whoever I hire will not live up to my expectations. The reviews here, and a strong desire to stay out of trouble with my wife, led me to bite the bullet and call Tony...I cannot adequately express how impressed I am!!!
My house needed painting 7-8 years ago but I kept putting it off. I knew the degraded paint was causing a lot of the outside trim to be damaged, but my procrastination persisted way too long. Finding someone who could both do a high quality paint job, who was fast but meticulous, and still have the know how and resources to replace a lot of the cornice and fascia was my challenge. It is difficult to find a contractor that has the ability to "do it all". Tony assured me right from the beginning that he could handle any need, and he wasn't exaggerating at all. Painting is his specialty, and the end result definitely shows that. But, what become evident quickly was that all of his other work is superior too! The finished paint work is simply outstanding. You would never know my old house was in such bad shape when he started. Really smooth, really detailed, and really clean.
After all of these years of stressing over finding a good contractor that I can call for any job, I finally found one and he blows past all of my expectations. Tony is a great guy and really accommodating of my numerous text messages and questions. You will not be disappointed with his work and he will do whatever it takes to make it the way you want. He is very busy, so be prepared for that. This is just an indication of how good he is. People seek him out and he has a great reputation.
I highly recommend Tony and his crews for any work you need done. He is just fantastic and I am very fortunate to have chosen him. Thank you Tony!!

    Eddie Walker General Contractor
He has not started yet; I have just contracted with him. He is tuned up in another project, he has done the measurements and everything and he let me know that it would be after Valentine's Day. We went and looked at the cabinets, etc., so we have already started the process. When he comes on Monday, he is going to be taking out the cabinets. I have not worked with him in the past, but I went on Angie's List and had a couple of personal recommendations for whom he did work for, and I checked him out and he is a pretty honest guy. I have heard about his details, etc., and saw some of his work and I do not foresee a problem in using him. My first impression about his way of being and how he represented himself was very good. He did quote me an estimate of what the project is going to end up costing me. For the detail type things, you just do not go and look at everything and he puts it in, we will do this in stages, like if I need a different cabinet or something. So we will work on each one and we will do it in sections at a time. I told him that I wanted it more hands on to pick what I wanted and the colors to make sure I got what I wanted, etc., and he said this is no problem and that is the way we should do it so that we can match up the hardware and everything. So, I was pretty impressed. Regarding price, I am extending my kitchen out so the first guy who came in here, who was going to do some custom cabinet, etc., charged me $13500 and that is what his estimate was, where as on the other hand with Eddie Walker General Contractor I am having the kitchen extended, cabinets, flooring and everything, plus the hallway and all the sheetrock, etc., and I feel like I got a very good deal on the price. He is very prompt, very courteous and he knows what he is doing in measurements and everything. When we do sections, I pay as we go, I do not put any money upfront and that says a lot about an individual. He will bring the invoices to pay for products that he puts his own money out on and each time we do a section I pay his labor.

I can't say enough about how pleased I am with Tony's work.  I was able to get in touch with Tony when I needed and he was very professional and courteous.  I loved the fact that so much work needed to be done and he finished it all in one Saturday!  Mr. Ratliff does awesome work and I've already recommended my neighbor to use him.  They're starting on his project this week.  I'll definitely use Tony's services again.

His work was excellent and his price was about quite a bit (approximately 30%) less than two other quotes.  He finished in the time table he gave us and his supply costs were about 70% less than what I had anticipated.  This was the third time we have used his services.  The previous time, we had him move french doors from inside our home to replace sliding glass doors and my wife and I were extremely pleased with his work quality and his prices.  He is a pleasant contractor that is courteous of letting our dog out when she needs out and we felt perfectly comfortable leaving him a key to our home to come and go as he needed.  The time prior to that remodel, we also had him completely texture, tape and bed our large living room - and his work quality then is what prompted us to hire him the following two times.    I wouldn't hesitate to call Shawn any time I need any work done on our home or other houses we own.
