Driveway Pavers reviews in Whitehouse

    A+Asphalt (aka C&J Asphalt)

I originally had James out in late August 2014 to build me a driveway for my cars and RV.  His first job was done well (or so I thought) and he seemed very responsive, professional and "went the extra mile."  At that time, I mentioned to James that it did not look like the other driveways I looked at that my neighbors had done.  He told me, there was no problem and the asphalt he laid should last 15-20 years because he "laid it like an asphalt road" and he laid at least 2" of asphalt after laying his base.  I decided to extend my RV part of the driveway and called James in February 2015 for the same type of drive.  He built a much smaller section and it was poorly done this time (looked bad and had small, but noticeable "hills and valleys" running throughout the asphalt) .  When I called James, he knew right away what my call was about and said he would fix it.  He said he should not have laid it (poor material used) and he will need to redo the work.  I also mentioned that the original section of the RV part of the drive was starting to show signs of developing what appeared to be "waves" in parts of the drive.  About 2 weeks later, I called James after I moved my RV.  I noticed significant "bird baths" (dips or holes) in several parts where my RV was sitting.  he said he would "make it all right" and said he'd call me in a couple of weeks.

Update:  It is now April, 2014 and I cannot get James to return my calls or get him to come out to even look at my drive.  He just started not returning my calls this week (I only called whenever he said he would call me and didn't or when he said he would be out and did not show).  At this point, the RV part of my drive (say, half of the $13,800 cost) is not usable and the other half is showing abnormal wear.  All this is visibly noticeable to my neighbors (at least 3 so far have mentioned something about the driveway), so it is not just me.

Update:  It is now June, 2015.  James has again agreed to fix my driveway and has been out a couple of times to review it.  He agreed to replace all of my driveway for only a $500 cost for sealing it and complete the work by 6-16-15.  At this point, I call this a fair-fix for this disaster of a driveway (did not last 8 months).  Hopefully, I will not lose my original $13,800 and will only have to repay part of the sealing expense.  He just came to my house, measured my driveway and stated that when he is done next week, the driveway will be grade "A".  As of today (6-22-15), James has not done the work and has not returned calls as promised.

I plan to add another update to this review once the work is completed or in about a month, if James fails to follow through as promised.  If completed, I plan to give another update in about 6-12 months, after James completes my driveway and I have had time to determine the quality.  I mentioned to James that it did not look like the other driveways I looked at that my neighbors had done.  After seeing the driveway, he agreed it was a disaster and agreed to replace it.  he cannot tell me what happened or why it deteriorated so quickly.

Update:  It is now July 7, 2015 and A+Asphalt came out to work on my driveway today.  However, James did not replace the driveway as he originally agreed, he decided to only repair it.  He patched it with additional asphalt.  I questioned him about this since most of my research says adding asphalt to holes, cracks and "bird baths" in the original asphalt job will not last and will not fix the problem, but he defended his work stating this "will be better than new."

Today the driveway looks good.  No holes, "bird baths", cracks, etc.  It looks better than his first job here.  I am not certain how long this will last.

I am disappointed that I have 4 pages of notes of James not returning calls, not keeping appointments and not doing what he said he would do to fix the problem that span 4 mos of trying to get my driveway to this point. James is a nice person but he did an exceptionally poor job for a $13,800 project on my asphalt driveway.  I am also disappointed that James cannot (or will not) tell me what happened to cause such a massive problem.  That said, at this point, I need to give James credit for coming out an "fixing" the very poor job initially done.  At the end of this job, the driveway looks very good, better than when he first laid it.  I feel sure James is frustrated with all of this, as am I.  I plan to give one or two more updates to this note after I can see the results of his patch-work.  I plan to update this review in 6 mos and in 12 mos.  By the end of the first full year, I should know if this repair job will work (the first job lasted less than 10 mos.).  Also, at this point, I do have other work James could do, but am electing to go elsewhere for bids .

This is a final update for the work done for me by this provider.  James first did work for in 8-14.  that work was not good and the driveway ultimately had to be replaced.  James acknowledged the bad work and replaced the entire driveway at no cost except for the sealing of the driveway.  during the phase where he replaced the bad driveway, he was difficult to reach and failed to keep promises, totally opposite from the initial work he did on the driveway.

I give James a final grade of "C" for the overall work.  It took over a year to get to a completed working product.  He was difficult to reach and work out plans to re-do the original bad job.  all that said, he did stand by his work and ultimately replace the entire driveway at no cost (except a change for sealing the re-done driveway).

James is a good person.  I suspect (and this is my guess) he tried to cut a few corners with the first attempt.  The driveway failed miserably (unable to even use it).  He stated right away (after seeing how bad it was) that eh would replace it, and he did.

I doubt I would use James again simply because of how bad the first driveway turned out and, then, how difficult it was and how long it took to get it fixed.  This was a very expensive job.  I expected more quality upfront.  I certainly paid for it.

We had the driveway sealed and also had A+ repair a couple of broken areas where tree roots had pushed the asphalt up.
James the owner gave us the bid and returned with his crew on the day of the
job. He took the time to explain their process and during the actual job
took the time to show us what they were doing and why.
Very professional and would not hesitate to use them again.
