Excavating reviews in Mesquite

  • Punctual, friendly, knowledgeable, and honest.  This describes Herndon McFarland Plumbing.
I discovered that our house had a leak somewhere in the sewer system.  I contacted six (6) plumbing companies to provide leak detection and to provide estimates for the repair costs.  My insurance company hired Herndon McFarland Plumbing to perform leak testing and to provide a quote.  I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical with my insurance company's recommendation, but Herndon McFarland Plumbing was by far the best company we had come through our home.  Not only were they most thorough in their leak detection (found a leak that 5 other companies had missed!), but they were also the most competitive in pricing.  Even more, they were the ONLY plumbing company to show up when they said they would (another company was 6 hours late to an appointment).  The owner, Lee McFarland, personally called me to schedule the repairs and also called to follow-up after his crew had finished.  I was so happy with their work on our sewer leaks that I cancelled an appointment with another plumber and had them complete the installation of a bathtub and the replace 4 tub/shower valves.  I am very pleased to have found Herndon McFarland plumbing and they will be the ONLY plumbing company I call from now on!

  • I noticed all of the plants looked unhealthy. One in particular was dead the 2nd day. I dug it up and found they had cut the roots off of it. I tried to have them come out to do the work from mid August and they didn't answer their phones and did not come out until late in September. The plants that were brought out looked very "tired".  Randall said to water them every night and they would perk up.  Well one maybe two died the rest look very unhealthy.  I wanted to supply the bushes but Randall said no his nursery was better than any other.  Now I have several very unhappy plants in my yard.  I am going to have to leave them until next season since I just had heart related surgery and cannot dig up and replant everything now.
It was a very frustrating experience then to get shafted by getting unhealthy plants well I don't recommend anyone else to try the firm until they get their act together.

  • Beware the allure of the radio advertisements read by the hosts you trust.  Unless you're made of money and enjoy being lied to.

On 9/1/2015 0ur toilet tank was leaking onto the floor.  We shut off the water supply and called our home warranty company.  They said they couldn't have anyone out there until 9/3/2015.  So on 9/2/2015 in the morning I called Baker Brothers and asked that they send somebody out.  I knew it couldn't be anything too complicated, and since our warranty deductible was going to be $75 I figured it was worth it to get it done a day sooner even if we had to pay a total of $125 or whatever, since this is the only toilet in the house.  Company arrived promptly, even a bit earlier than expected.  They ran some water into the toilet tank, looked at the water leaking on the floor, and shut it off again (although not completely).  They proceeded to tell us we had a cracked toilet tank.  They gave us four repair options: a "major tank rebuild" for about $380, a new Kohler toilet installed for about $660 (including 5 year warranty), a standard 2-piece toilet installed for $540 (with 2 year warranty) or we could provide a toilet ourselves and they would charge about $265 to install it.  I told them not to bother, because our warranty company would cover some of the cost if we used the plumbing company they had assigned, and if I was going to save $200 or $300 I may as well wait a day.  Obviously Baker Brothers was not quoting the cheapest price around, but all the radio advertisements I hear talk about what "quality work" they do, so if it wasn't for having my AHS warranty I would have gone ahead with the work.

By the way, the tank was leaking again when I got home because Baker Brothers had not turned the shut off tightly.  In fact, they had diagnosed the problem without removing the tank at all; they just removed the tank lid and ran some water in.

THANK GOODNESS I didn't fall for their lies.  The plumbing company our warranty sent out arrived on 9/3/2015.  He removed the tank entirely and inspected it thoroughly.  There was no crack in the tank ANYWHERE.  And he was beside himself as to how any licensed plumber could diagnose a cracked tank without removing the tank unless it was visible from the top or outside (which it wasn't, because there was NO CRACK.  Baker Brothers had simply LIED and MISDIAGNOSED the problem...well, they didn't diagnose it at all, since they didn't DO anything but lift the lid and run water in it to find it leaked...which was the whole reason they were there, so obviously it LEAKED).

The plumber found all he had to do was replace the tank-to-toilet gasket, which was old and quite worn.  Since we had a $75 deductible we had to pay, he want ahead and replaced a few other tank parts that he said were still working but were old and would wear out eventually...because he didn't want us to have to pay $75 for a $6 part and 15 minutes labor!!  A far cry from the "major tank rebuild" quote of over $380 Baker Brothers gave us.  He did tell us he could call the warranty company and probably get approval for a new toilet because of the age of this one, but said there was no reason to do that unless we wanted the new one.

(If you check my reviews you can find the plumbing company who did the job for us).

The next day I called Baker Brothers and CALMLY complained about being lied to.  I gave detailed information to the woman who answered the phone, and told her I wanted a call back from somebody to explain.  I have her my work and my cell number.  I feel I am due the $39.99 back since I paid that for a visit and a diagnosis, not somebody coming in the door to lie to me.

Not surprisingly, days later nobody from Baker Brothers has called me.  After reading some of the reviews on here I feel lucky that Baker Brothers and their so-called well-trained plumbers only took me for $40.  BEWARE!!!

Oh, and in case you're wondering, I have all of this in writing from both companies.  One was honest, did the small repair and offered to try and get approval for a new toilet under my warranty.  The other, Baker Brothers, came in, diagnosed nothing, lied, offered expensive unnecessary repairs, and left.

P.S. The toilet works great.  No thanks to Baker Brothers.

  • We moved our washing machine into a different location in our house so we needed a new drain line connection. They came out early that morning to start digging. They had to go all the way from one side of my house to the other in the backyard to connect to the previous drain line. They had the job finished by the end of the day. I had a good experience with them and I would definitely use them again for any future jobs.

  • David is very responsive and works with integrity.  He will provide services by the hour or by the job.  I can provide materials or he will do the shopping.  McLean Specialty Services is one stop shopping for home repair and remodel.  I will be needing some carpet replaced and David can take care of this too.  David has an employee that works non-stop and also serves with integrity.  I would not be hesitant to leave David unattended in our home.  He is very trustworthy.
I will recommend him to all my friends.

  • I first contacted Mr. Rooter who I had used on replacing my sewer line for a whopping $7000 dollars to come out and give me
an estimate on fixing my water line.  They arrived promptly and informed me it would cost over $1600 to replace the water line or
$639 to basically patch the job with no guarantee which I can understand.  I called Mesquite plumbing to get a over the phone estimate of my problem which I wish now I would have done with my previous sewer problem. I was told they could complete the patch job for between 275-300 dollars and I told them to come out when they could and to my surprise they sent someone over right away. The guys arrived and said they would get right on it which they did.  After they completed the job it cost me $277
which blew my away especially after getting that initial quote from Mr. Rooter. I will be using Mesquite plumbing in the future and
have a pretty bad taste in my mouth for the Mr. Rooter company.  I usually always get a least three quotes from companies but
the sewer problem needed to be done quickly since I had relatives staying with us at the time. I should have set the relatives up
in a hotel and called Mesquite Plumbing.

  • I lost water pressure during the night and had water standing in my front yard.  I called A2Z about 7:00 on Saturday morning and Casey said they had a full day scheduled.  He said he would try to come that afternoon but he wasn't sure he could come until the next day. At about 4:00, on the day I called, Jason called to say he was on his way.  At about 4:30 Jason and Michael arrived.  They found where they thought the leak was (I thought they were about 5' off).  They put down a piece of plastic to place dirt and grass on.  They then removed a square section of grass that was about 20" X 20" and dug down almost 3' before finding the water line. They were right on target in finding the leak, I would have dug several feet away.  The supply line had a crack which they cut out and replaced.  After testing the repaired line, they filled the hole and replaced the grass.  From the start to finish they took about an hour and a half.  Jason and Michael explained everything they were doing and I think they did a great job.  I will definitely call them again if I need plumbing work.

  • They did great work. No problems at all after work was completed. They had to go through foundation. They also repaired my central air unit outside.
