    Wayne Erickson signed a document claiming that all subcontractors had been paid in full and that all work had been completed. Subsequently we received over $60,000 worth of lien threats against our home from the subcontractors who were unpaid.

    "DO NOT use this builder. If you want a quality built home you will not get if French Homes builds it. We know they built ours. Interior fit and finish is sub par. Cement work is sloppy. Watered down stain and paint was used on the interior and exterior. Stain was slopped on the cement when the porch wood and the rails going to the garage was stained. I asked Don to clean up the stain. He refused. Twenty five feet of ridge vent shingles where left off the roof. Plain shingles were stapled on where the ridge vent shingles were supposed to go. The stain on the front porch started peeling off after about nine months. I had to re-stain the entire porch. Before doing that I had to fill in about 200 screw holes that were left unfinished. The original stain came off with a wire brush. Quality stain would have soaked into the wood and would not have come off using a wire brush. Some of the non supporting joints are not joints. There are big gaps in them with nails showing in the gap. The interior stairs and the floor on the second level squeek. Most of the electrical outlets upstairs and several downstairs blow the fuse in the garage when the vacumn cleaner is plugged in and turned on. The bathtub upstairs was not leveled when installed. The caulking around the tub is wider at the rear of the tub than at the front. The caulking was very poorly applied to the tub. The tub not being level causes water to puddle at the back of the tub. This has made the caulking at the back of the tub to mold leaving it almost black. Cleaning with bleach, vinegar, and several other types of cleaner has no effect on getting rid of the stain. Don was made aware of the problem and he told us to cut a hole in the closet wall and put wood under the tub to prop it up and make it level. I didn't install the tub. His workers didn't level it when it was installed. French Homes should fix it. We had an issue with the grout around the the bottom of the walls when the tile floor was put down. The grout was cracking from day one. We wanted to get it redone right away but Cher told us to wait about 6 to 8 months because there might be other issues and all of them could be taken care of at the same time. We waited. Big mistake. Don brought over Jim the owner of Webco. They installed the floor tile and the carpet. Jim and Don walked in the front door and Jim started going on how the grout being cracked was not his fault. He was rude, arrogant and condescending. He argued with us the whole time he was here. He ended up blaming my wife and I for the cracked grout. We had never met a miserable excuse for a business man and a human being as Jim owner of Webco. Webco did nothing to rectify the problem. During the whole time this was going on Don stood there and said absolutely nothing. Don let this man insult and berate his customer. He should have stood up for his customer. After all he hired Webco. The door upstairs that goes to the attic will not stay latched. There are 10 holes in the "

    We contracted with Jeff Walling, president of Owner Builder Network in August, 2011 to provide the following services for $2,000, which we paid for up front:
    1. a copy of the Owner Builder Kit (collection of sample permits, checklists, contacts, how-to info)
    2. Owner Builder Support for a shop (permit help, design review, quotes for parts through his business, inspections and general assistance)
    3. $1,000 to be applied towards Owner Builder Support for an adjacent house.
    Shortly after signing our contract, I had a series of debilitating health issues.  After several months at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, I am able to live at home, but am bed-bound 4 out of 5 days and can not travel outside the house alone.  
    We were clearly unable to continue our dream of building a house in the country, much less managing the construction ourselves, and put the land up for sale before we had even staked a location for the first shop.
    We contacted  Mr. Walling, explaining our situation and asking for a partial refund for work uncompleted.  Despite numerous email and phone calls, he has refused to respond.
    Specifically, we asked for a $1700 refund, (roughly $1000 for the unstarted house, $100 for the undelivered Owner Builder Kit, and $600 for the undelivered plan reviews, material ordering, inspections and contractor referrals).   To date, we have not received any refund and Mr. Walling has declined to respond to multiple contacts.  
    I was extremely dissapointed in the manner the Kit was waved as a super-propriatory and critical part of their plan, yet was never delivered to us, despite several requests.  It clearly made our permit filing much more difficult, deprived us of local contacts, and it felt like we were being held hostage for more money.
    Our contract is hand-written and does not specify what happens in the event of a catastrophic medical problem or other acts of god which would leave us unable - not unwilling - to complete the construction.   However, Mr. Wallling was verbally very clear that he would provide refunds for such unavoidable situations, and was adamant that any such events would not be an issue as 'his word was his bond.'  
    The service itself can provide a great benefit, and many have had great success.  I believe that our problems lie not with the Owner Builder Network, but with this particular extension and Mr. Walling.  I would use the service again, but I would NOT do so with Mr.Walling.   I would urge others to work through different offices, or to retain legal council to provide a detailed contract with deliverables, assigned prices, refund conditions and timelines.
