    Dean's Handyman & Remodeling Services
How in THE hay! did this company get so many accolades on Angies List????? Honest to GOD, for real???? (ANGIE ... we need to talk, because your system is not working for me). Really!? I had to put a stop payment on a $3,222.30 (I have NEVER done that). I am still assessing the damage! This company is a SLIIPER (sluper/swiper). To be fair, they did offer to make amends, on their quality of work, BUT, not on their price. Why in the flipping &%^&$%^^% is Dean's Handyman on Angies List!!! Game over and I will be making my own list. This is RAPE and their answer is to . . .R-A-P-E me again????? I am sorry, but No Thank You! Pictures are attached.

Quality Roofing 4 Less & Guttering
We are so pleased with the end result. Tile roof is gone and replaced with a composite roof. It looks wonderful. He replaced the fascia as well as the soffits that needed to be replaced. Harold and his crew showed up when they said they would and such hard workers. He even texted us over the weekend when we were gone to let us know when he arrived at our house and again when he left. Several of our neighbors have asked for his number and have told us how great our house looks. I would recommend them to anyone. Awesome job!

    Clear Creek Home Improvements
Great! Like all projects there were unexpected things just because you can't guess what's behind the walls or bricks or how something will look once you put it up, but Kevin took care of everything and communicated very well with us, gave us options and let us know up front what options cost. Several places he made things nicer just because it was "the right thing to do." I might not have noticed the details, but once they were done they really made it look great. Also all his guys were super nice, respectful and patient when my boys came out to watch. All his subcontractors were great too, like the electrician, gutter guys, etc. When Kevin said turn-key he was right, I didn't even have to sweep. It was great!

    Dean's Handyman & Remodeling Services
let me just say this...I ACCIDENTALLY GAVE DEAN A $10,000 diamond bracelet, AND HE RETURNED IT TO ME. Honesty is one of the most important qualities of anyone in your home, and Dean proved himself in a way that was, well, shocking. Had he not returned it to me, I would not have even known what happened to it. DEAN ROCKS!!

    L&D Painting and Remodeling
L & D painting and remodeling has done a lot of work over the last month from Exterior to Interior.  We are selling our house in a couple of weeks and they were the perfect crew for the job.  There was nothing too big or too small they couldn't fix.  They are priced very well and are in and out quickly while providing quality work.  Our house looks great thanks to L&D!  I would recommend them to everyone!

    Clear Creek Home Improvements
All in all it went very well. The work spanned the holidays so there was some expected delays. When the tile in the bathroom was first installed there were some problems with the subfloor not being level. The contractor pulled up the tiles, re-leveled the floor and reinstalled new tile no problem. Workers arrived as scheduled and worked hard to complete the job. Some delay in getting the correct plumbing for the claw foot tub but they were able to side track another order that was not urgent and get us the required parts sooner than expected. That was great because it was the only thing left for them to do. We have been enjoying our new bathroom very much! The General Contractor (Kevin) was very involved with the project and kept good track of the progress. He was honest and kept us informed even with the bad news (delay in parts!). He was always available by e-mail, phone, and text. Both major and minor issues were discussed and resolved right away. I would highly recommend Clear Creek to anyone!

    Unique Construction Concepts
First thing to say, I really liked JC Hill, the contractor. He's just a laid back kind of guy with a good sense of humor and bad knees. Easy to talk to and understood what I wanted done. That's why I hired him.

Secondly, for the most part I like the finished product a lot. They were very fast. The remodel only took about 3 weeks total once they got started, which was way faster than I imagined it would take.

Now, the problems. Some things were done badly. The people he had working for him, while very nice, didn't know how to work with wood. Any wood they finished or refinished was badly done. I had them touch up some interior doors and they look worse now than they did before.  I also had them replace the bifold doors leading into the laundry area and they installed doors that were and look cheap.  In the course of the remodel new baseboards had to be installed. I didn't realize until after they were all installed that the new ones aren't even wood. They're some kind of pressboard. The day after they left I was hanging a key caddy on the wall and it fell and put a hole in the baseboard. I thought what? and then picked up the piece that fell out and it was just like cardboard. I was stunned. The light fixture in the kitchen was hung at least 6 to 12 inches too high. It looks ridiculous. Several pieces of the backsplash tile on the stove side of the kitchen are cracked. Why would they install cracked tile? The backsplash tile on the sink side of the kitchen looks like a child installed it. Some tiles stick out and some are sunk in. No smoothness to the surface at all. When I pointed it out to the sub, he said he'd fix it and the result was even worse. The ceiling in the back hall and the laundry area, while painted, looks terrible. Again, I think a child could have done a better job and they put the old dirty a/c vent back up without even painting it. I had to go around and do a lot of the touch up painting myself, which I didn't mind so much but sheesh.

I called JC and he came out and looked at the problems. He just shook his head when he saw the backsplash area but said it couldn't be fixed. The tiles are all set. (I don't believe it can't be fixed. It would just be a major, expensive fix and he doesn't want to do it.) He said he'd fix the staining and varnishing of the doors, replace the baseboards with wood and have the light fixture lowered. He said he'd have another of his contractors call me and the work shouldn't take more than a day. Time went by and no call. I called JC again and he told me the guy had been really busy on another job but that he was finishing up and would call me. Time went by and again no call. So I called JC again and again he came up with some excuse but for sure now the guy would call and come out. More time went by. We're talking not days here, but weeks. This is now at least 4 weeks out from when he was here and said he'd have it fixed. I called him a 4th time and this time his connection was so bad I couldn't understand him. I gave up. I told him I wouldn't call again. So, now I'm stuck with living with an expensive remodel that looks bad and needs fixing or hiring someone else to fix things I already paid JC for.

If you hire him, do NOT give him his final payment until at least a week or two after the final work is done. This will give you time to really look things over and make sure they were done correctly and to your satisfaction. Afterall, you're paying for it.

All the above ratings would have been all A's and B's if he had just had things done correctly or fixed the problems.

    UPDATE 9/17/14:

About two weeks after I made this post, JC called me and told me he had been out of the country but he was back now and he had a subcontractor free who could come and help fix things. The guy and his assistant came (nice guys btw) and worked for about two weeks on fixing things. They lowered the light in the kitchen to the proper height, they replaced the baseboards with actual wooden ones, they did their best fixing the backsplash problem. (It's very difficult to replace individual tiles in a backsplash but they did really a pretty good job). The doors leading from the kitchen to the garage and from the kitchen to a bedroom were also replaced (at my expense) as well as the bifold door in front of the laundry area.

I would rate the fact that after all this time someone did come and try to fix things as an "A" rating. However, all the above problems did happen and people should be aware of them and because of them I'm leaving the above ratings as I first had them.

Two more things to say: First everyone who worked for this company that I had any contact with were really nice people. Easy to talk to and easy to have in your home. Secondly, read your contract. If there is something you don't understand or seems like a gray area, talk it out with JC and have the contract written in a way that you both understand exactly what each point means. He was very good to me on that and I'm glad I did because there were a few areas that would have been problematic if I hadn't had it clarified.

Phillips Painting Roofing, Gutters, Windows and Siding

I obtained quotes from two other painters and one gutter company.  All were impressive and would have been a little less money, but I was more comfortable with having only one company to deal with.

Everyone from Phillips was professional and attentive to detail - from the project estimator to every professional, including the office personnel that I talked to.  They were attentive to my questions and concerns.  The only very minor issue was the transposition of two numbers of my street address which fortunately was the last two numbers and not the first two.  They adjusted their schedule to return the day before the heavy rains to put up the new gutters.  There were a couple items of carpentry work that were on my estimate form that did not make it on their worksheet and they did not hesitate to accomplish the work.  They even fixed another item that the estimator and I had missed.   The painting was done quickly, without damage to plants or brickwork, and it looks very good.  The painters even decided to paint eight shutters that we were only going to pressure wash.  This wasn't a big effort or an extra charge, but it shows their professionalism and desire to make the total job look good.  Clean-up was complete and much appreciated.  Very satisfied with Phillips and would hire them again.

    Swanson Renovations, LLC
From start to finish Chad and Carter were a perfect Match for my Husband and I.  When asked, they would share thier idea's which I greatly needed.  Thier was so many things I needed to make decisions on, it was getting a little scary if I was making the right choices.  The  one thing I know is that choosing Swanson's Renovation's is one of the best decisions Iv'e ever made- besides marrying my Husband!

    Superior Building & Remodeling LLC
Seeing that our home exterior needed painting, I decided to ask for bids from two of the highest rated local companies on Angies list. Both contractors were general contractors, not just paint contractors. Of the two contractors, Dennis Peterson at Superior Building and Remodeling, Keller TX, submitted the lower bid, so I awarded him the job.

As it turns out, Dennis is pretty much the entire company. He sometimes uses an assistant on bigger jobs, though, and I was very pleased to have none other than his father, Ralph Peterson, helping his son on this job. Ralph, in addition to being a fine gentleman, is a very skilled artisan, builder, and painter in his own right. Dennis worked me into his schedule within about a week, they showed up promptly at the agreed upon time and the job went very smoothly. Even though the job included a full pressure washing and scraping of the entire exterior and even though Dennis and Ralph did extensive masking and taping in order to avoid any over spray, the job was completed in 3 work days (Dennis uses both a spray rig and a brush in order to achieve complete coverage). Dennis and Ralph were consummate professionals throughout the process and our home has never looked better in the 40 years we've been here.

I should say a few words about what I paid for this fine paint job. Dennis submitted a bid of $2450, plus replacement of any worn trim on a cost plus basis. Dennis replaced over 30 feet of trim, making the final price I paid $2850. The second contractor, also an experienced and highly rated professional, submitted a bid that would have worked out to a final price of al least $5360. In my opinion, the work performed by Dennis and Ralph was of such a high quality that it could be improved only at the margin, if at all. Some possible marginal improvement could in no way justify the higher price. This experience suggests that even when working with fine contractors who have a very high Angies list rating, it is very important to get multiple bids.
