    Handyman Connection - Chattanooga
Had 55 sheets of drywall hung by another provider in my four car garage. Job was sub-standard but repairable. My fault, I tried to save some money (this company did drywall work for me 5 years ago and it came out fine- things change I guess). Because of the job they did on the hanging I elected to not have them do the finishing work and joined Angie's List to find some highly reviewed contractors I could trust to finish it properly. From there I contacted Handyman Connection of Chattanooga.
A fellow named Mike called me and came out to give me an estimate. He initially stated that he wouldn't be able to do the mudding and sanding (finishing) for less than $2,000. This was not acceptable to me and I declined. But when I called later he dropped the price to $1,200 if I would provide the mud, tape, and bead. This was within my budget and in light of the work that would have to be done to get it paintable I accepted. He explained it would take multiple treatments to get the walls as smooth as possible and a lot of labor and that he was an "expert" at this type of job. He claimed to have a crew of two to three guys as well and would start right away.
The other guys never showed up, not once. He had multiple excuses for this but the entire time I only got him alone. It took about 5-6 visits (over 3 weeks time) before he declared that he was pretty much done and had gotten the walls and ceiling as far as they could be improved. The finished job is extremely sub-standard and had lots of work that still needed to be done to make it right. I know this because I have since hired an "actual" drywall guy with the appropriate tools and crew, they are finishing up as I write this and the walls are looking great. Apparently Mike stopped a couple of skim levels short of getting the job done right. He didn't finish some trim work he had committed to either, I had to do that myself. I also had to listen to constant complaints about where I live, and how much of a hardship it was to drive out this "far" from Ooltewah. He knew where I lived when he made the quote, right? If you can't drive 60 miles to a job, you shouldn't bid on the job.
The new guys actually do this for a living, have the proper tools (including an electric wall sander that hooks to a shop vaccuum! Who knew such a thing existed?) and know just how to finish even a bad hanging job to paintable smoothness. I don't know if Mike is actually a drywall professional or not - apparently he has convinced the people at Handyman Connection that he is - but he did not do a satisfactory job for me. Especially considering what I have paid him. I calculated the actual hours he was on my property working and it came out to around 30+. Let's say 40 hours just to be generous. That means he collected $30 an hour to do a sub-standard job on my garage that I still have to pay money out on to be made right. I don't make $30 bucks an hour, do you? Never heard of a mudder that did - and I don't know how he sleeps at night. I only agreed to this amount because he convinced me that he was an expert at this type of work and the fact that I got him through the world-famous "Angie's List" made me think it would be worth the extra expense to make a sub-standard job look as good as possible. It most assuredly was not.
I am out an additional $375 to get the walls and ceilings ready to paint. I have texted with Mike to explain this to him. He agreed to refund a part of what I have paid him but he didn't say how much. He did offer to come back out for another visit after the holidays but at that point I realized that it probably wasn't going to get much better with him and I have to get this finished.
The offer of a partial refund  was over two weeks ago and I don't expect to hear from him anymore. Regardless I feel it's important to review his work in this forum and let future customers make their decisions accordingly. If Handyman Connection doesn't feel like they're responsible for Mike's substandard work perhaps they should consider vetting their contractors better in future. The HC sticker is on the man's truck so I feel it's only fair that my review should reflect this both for Handyman Connection, Mike, and Angie's List customers in future.

I was very pleased with that. He was wonderful for me about directing the work. He did what I asked him to do and for the most part in a timely manner. He cleaned up the work site and I have hired him again since that experience. He has worked for me again for a couple of times and I've always been pleased with the work he does. He usually have a full time job that he's working and would work to my work on his off hours and weekends. He would do it as quickly as he could but there were times when he had family medical issues that he had to take care of and just had to work around his job schedule and I was okay with that. Some people might not be but for me, it worked out wonderfully. He always did eventually show up and everything was taken care of. His quality of work is excellent.
