    Fosters Painting & Tile
Foster responded to our request for an estimate within an hour. He came out the same day, and after listening to what we wanted done, as well as, our concerns, gave us a written estimate. He was able to start on our house one day after we chose his company. It's been many years since we've hired a company with such great people. They arrived on time or early, were very polite, didn't use foul language around our kids, and were gentle with our furniture. They cleaned up after themselves and never refused a touch up request. And, they did a great job painting, too!

The result is an amazing transformation of both the aesthetics and the functionality of our back and side yards, as well as fixing the basement water issues that started all this. Our friends and family have come and just stared at the results, and said "wow", and something like " I can't believe the difference that made." It looks like this was how it was originally intended, instead of just fixing a problem
    The really good:
    • The excavating/grading work was done quickly and well, and with obvious skill (by the brother-in-law). He also was very gracious to put the extra dirt being removed in various low spots in the yard.  He also separated the little topsoil available to be used after grading instead of just burying at as had been done previously.

The retaining wall(s) look great and great care was taken on making sure each block was level. I watched the individual laying the block, using a level in both directions on a single block and a level across multiple blocks, as well hammering them into position with a dead blow mallet.  The top caps were individually cut with a concrete saw.  The blocks are as high as ten rows, but there is no discernable variation of heights at the caps. The caps are all glued securely.  The block is back filled with gravel, as well as french drains coming out of the basement.
The yard/wall plan went through some alterations as more dirt was removed and the topography was more readily visualized.  The wall ended up being 20 feet longer than estimated.  There were also issues with water and old septic lines, and the need to change the height of some downspouts.  Also added were dirt fills in front of the house around shrubbery where the drainage contour was incorrect. Most of these "add-on"s went without charge.  We did need a few more caps, and there was a minor charge for labor for the extra wall, which was disclosed when the changes were requested.
Tim (the owner) arranged, at our request, for us to pay for the block directly, which allowed us to use a credit card and get significant points. He was not pushy and did not demand full (or any) payment up front (other than the materials), and would ask for payment as each part of the job was completed.
As for cost, the block was well more than half of the expense.  I would have thought the labor to be the major factor.  I had a couple other contractors who either saw the wall or heard the plan, and they were surprised how low the cost was. I had another contractor who bid the job much higher with a decidedly less labor intensive plan, and much cheaper block.
    The ok:
Communication: Overall better than average for this area, which is not saying much. As these walls were a longer process, made even longer by the incessant rains we had this year, the communication was somewhat variable ranging from very good to a missed appointment.
This project was extensive, and many small things came up. I would recommend writing down anything important you want to add or accomplish during the job.
Overall the work done and the product were superb.  Tim was very obliging on extras and add-ons.  He even took a tree to the lumber mill for me and pretty much charged me for gas, while giving me credit for what the lumber mill paid for the tree.  I have and will use him again.

They had a problem with their Outlook calendar not showing my appointment.  They emailed and called the next day to apologize and set up a new appointment at my convenience.  We set 2nd appt and got a great explanation of what the problems are, why they are occurring, and how they would fix.  Nice guys who are actually experts in their field, not salespeople
