Moving reviews in Rapid City

    Thomas & Sons Moving Company
The move went well and I was impressed with the job done by those moving me, except for one thing which didn't have to be a big deal. The company's response to the issue leaves me wondering about the owners' willingness to accept responsibility and concern about customer satisfaction. For this reason I would not recommend using them. When I initially scheduled this move, I asked Julie, the receptionist, if I needed to unload my upright freezer. She said no. The young men who moved me also said there was no need as they would move it full. They did so, placing it against the wall directly in front of the outlet. Four days after my move, I discovered it had not been plugged in. Mistakes happen, there was no malicious intent, they were busy. I can accept that. In my opinion, the problem occurred when I called the office. At 8 A.M. or so I left a message stating what happened and asked for a return call. No response. I called again around 1:00 at which time Julie said she was sorry but the situation was my "fault" because I had forgotten to plug in my freezer. She stated nothing like this had ever happened before, so clearly the issue was mine. Surprised by this, I stated I expected more from a service that cost me $800 (actually it was $880). Julie asked what would make me happy. I said I would like partial reimbursement for the contents. She said she would get back to me. In the following phone call Julie told me there was nothing they were willing to do to rectify the situation. She went on to explain they didn't plug in my T.V. or stereo, and shouldn't be expected to plug in my freezer. She also stated I needed to "stop blaming" them for the fact I "forgot to plug in my freezer." Interestingly, she did acknowledge the people moving me were "on to the next thing" and that was probably why they didn't plug it in. She didn't seem to understand I was more bothered by her response and lack of concern about customer satisfaction rather than the actual event, even though I stated so using those exact words. Instead she stated "we could argue for the next hour" and nothing would change as she was going to "stand her ground." Because the damage technically occurred after the move, I really didn't expect any reimbursement. I would have been satisfied with a genuine apology and a plan to prevent this from happening to someone else in the future. The "plan" could be as basic as informing customers they would be expected to plug in their own freezers. If at any point I had been aware this would be the expectation, I would have done so. To be clear, my poor review is a reflection my interaction with the office staff, not of the individuals who provided labor.

First of all, I am guessing at the date, it was around that time.   My spouse wanted to save money and hire people from the labor pool in town and hire professionals only for the few special pieces but I said absolutely not and to hire a professional moving team that is insured and covered for any possible damages. I spent a lot of time looking up movers, interviewing them and then had to convince my spouse that this was the way to go.   Their cost was $50 an hour person vs $15 an hour that my spouse wanted to hire.  This was because I had a few important pieces that were large and pricey. We also were charged during the time the three of them ate lunch.  I should add that at the time of the move, my piece of furniture was no  no longer new and probably the value had gone down to about $1000.  But it was in excellent condition.

They showed up a few hours late and brought an extra person which then meant the total was a few hundred dollars more than the estimate. Honestly, I would have actually been okay with that had there been no other issues.

As it turned out, they damaged my most expensive piece.  Accidents do happen, and they did take the part with them to get it replaced.   I did multiple follow ups and initially they said they were in search of someone who could do it and later supposedly they were still waiting from whoever was doing the glass.  It ended up taking about 5 months and I got back a cheaper version of what they had broken. I told the guy that delivered it that that was the case and even showed him a pic of what it was supposed to be but I realized he really had nothing to do with it.   Once again, had it been replaced with the same thing, I would have been absolutely okay with it, even with the 5 month delay.  My guess is that when they found out what it would cost to replace it with the same thing, they were probably stunned.  But then, isn't that what insurance is for?

I was really upset about this whole thing and waited 5 months before doing the review.  This is worst review I have ever written and I thought long and hard about it.

    Exodus Moving & Storage
The initial bid process was great.  We felt comfortable with the Fort Collins manager, Jake, who came to our home and gave us a quote.  He made us feel like we were making a great choice and was cheaper than the other companies we had contacted.
He told us our things would be the only items in our truck.
    On the packing day
    - the truck showed up with additional items from another families move
    - the movers broke several items including a glass door and had no way of cleaning up the glass.  Thankfully, they had forgotten to pack the vacuum (which I discovered after they left) so I was able to vacuum it up
    - the night that they were supposed to drop off our items they were supposed to call and confirm.  They never did and did not answer the phone.  When we contacted the emergency contact (Jake in fort collins) he also did not answer so we had no idea if our items had actually made it
    - we were promised that only trained moving crews would unload our items.  It was quite obvious when our items were being unpacked that the individuals assisting the driver were hired day laborers from town
    - they placed all of the items in one room despite the boxes being labeled and doors being labeled for unpacking
    - the driver tried to leave and "get his truck fixed" and left a disassembled elliptical in the lawn.  It was obvious he was not planning to come back (his day laborers had already been paid and left) but thankfully we picked up on it and he did come back
    - multiple items were broken in the move: butcher block, elliptical, an antique china cabinet, lawn mower and many others.  -Also, multiple scuffs were made in paint througout the entire house.
I could go on for hours about how terrible this experience was.  They hire smooth talkers to give estimates and make people feel comfortable but they quality of their work and customer service is as sub par as you can possibly get.  Do yourselves a favor and avoid this company at all costs.

Chad, responded quickly to our query for services and was able to meet our schedule.  Although they were a little late (previous job held them up), when they got to the storage unit they got to work immediately.  They worked quickly, without breaks despite the hot day.  They obviously knew what they were doing as they packed the trailer efficiently and were cautious to avoid damaging any items.  There was a small amount of damage but it was fractional compared to our last five moves, some of which were large, professional companies.
They apparently do some landscaping and handyman services so I will be keeping their number handy.  I highly recommend them, although it may make it harder for me to schedule them for future projects :)

Bester Brothers Transfer & Storage Company
Moving is never fun but the guys showed up on time and worked with us to load their truck in the most efficient way. Because we were temporally moving into an apartment we had a number of items that were going into storage so it was very important that they get placed in the back of the truck so they could be unloaded first. At the delivery site they checked in with us the night before to let us know they had arrived in Rapid City and scheduled a time to start the next day. They showed up right on time the next day at the storage locker right on time and then moved on to our apartment. We are on the 3rd floor and have no elevator but we got no complaints and were unloaded by noon. After finishing at the apartment we had a few items that needed to go to the storage locker. They took them at no additional charge and no complaining. Also, the home office checked in with us several times to make sure everything was going smoothly.
