"It took a long time because they are very busy and were working outside as long as they could. The project started January 21 and finished February 23. We had picked" up some of the new items ourselves, but they picked up the vanity and all the tub-shower-toilet stuff from A.Y.
's.
and
were the primary workers, and they both are excellent. They had to work around the painting and floor-laying, but it all worked out in the end. The tub and shower required taking down some old wall, so they had to put new wall up. They also had to take out the old in-wall medicine cabinet because the new one was flush with the wall. They installed a new light above the tub where there had been none, which required new wiring. They put a new four-light bar above the medicine cabinet. They had to build an improvised box to allow the lights to hang in front of the medicine cabinet shelf on top. They also had to fix a little problem with the front of the tub that wasn't rigid like it was supposed to be.
said he'd never seen one like that, but he knew just what to do. He even went with us to
's to select the trim and door casings and give us advice on the new lights. We couldn't be more pleased with the final outcome and would recommend
to anyone.

"
at Classic Kitchen and Baths referred us to a wonderful person that didn't hesitate to help us when the original installer (Oldja) didn't" even return our calls.
understood our unique problem our under-mount kitchen sink was not put in properly and secured properly to the granite.
referred us to
of Precision Granite.
came by the next day and was able to repair our sink. He properly braced the sink (this was not done by Oldja) and replaced the silicone caulking - it is now stable and looks great. Thanks
for helping us out. You don't find your quality of caring in this day and time. And thanks to
for his expertise. Any future cabinetry and granite work will definitely go to Class Kitchen and Baths and Precision Granite.

?

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?
Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

April came by to review my project, took some pics and left me with a brochure with general info. I have had no follow up to date and cannot get a response via email. I can't imagine how a project would go if I actually hired her. I feel like she doesn't value this potential project. Maybe she should tell folks she is at full capacity and cannot take on any more clients at this time rather than running the business at 50%. This leaves everyone pretty disappointed and isn't a good way to run a business. I've begun looking for another designer/general contractor because I can no longer wait.

Keystone from the first meeting with
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
to the last detail managed by the project manager Ed was excellent. Bror was responsible for the design of the new island and layout work. He was detailed and listened well to what I wanted. He emailed up dates after his first visit and retuned to double check the exact dimensions. The island turned out great. The work started on time as promised ans was completed as efficiently as possible. Ed was our project manager. He was personalble as were all of the tradesmen and very professional. He took a hands-on approach to all parts of the renovation. This included kitchen prep and demolition modifications to the cabinetry instillation of new electrical tiling plumbing and instillation of new countertops. He communicated well with us and other tradesmen to confirm when they were to show up or change their schedule as needed. He was very knowledgable precise in his workmanship and flexible. When problems arose he figured out ways to make everything work. We had delays in getting hardware and lighting that moved him onto another job but he responded immediately when the parts came in. The daily clean-up was great.
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
did most of the tile work and he was excellent. It was a difficult job due to inlayed art and handmade tiles with special trim work. Overall we are so pleased with the work and would highly recommend this company.

was great to work with. Very down to earth. All work was completed in a timely manner and the craftsmanship was top notch.
I had him get rid of some ugly old counters from the 80's and replace with newer linoleum. He prefabbed the work in his shop and installed on site.
His two employees

York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
responded immedicately to my distress call of a kitchen ceiling. He stopped the leak but upon further investigation, discovered the leak was coming from my old, outdated bathroom located above the kitchen, There were 3 major layers of badly done remodels with each water logged and full of black mold. It wasn't an ideal situation and one that I was not prepared for, however,
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
kept me informed by showing me the damage and keeping me updated on the progress. He was able to come up with innovative ideas that not only turned out to be aesthetically beautiful and functional, he also worked within my limited budget.

is honest, trustworthy and is capable of tackling any home improvement need. I highly recommend him!

I arranged for an estimate on a bathroom remodel through Home Depot.
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is the company that Home Depot uses for home remodeling. We were first visited by a husband wife team, who were personable and knowledgeable and had plenty of tile samples and design ideas. There was no pressure to sign a contract or select more expensive design choices, although we were in the
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
for many of the upgraded finishes and fixtures. This was not the cheapest bid that I received for this job, however it was fair and the statement of work and the attention to detail and itemization was better than the other bids I received. There was a lag time between the time we signed the contract and when the remodel began. Turns out these guys are very busy. However while waiting for our turn the project manager assigned to our remodel contacted us a few times, reviewing our selections, making very helpful design suggestions which we agreed, and letting us no the status of items that were special order.

Once construction began, the Absolute guys were great. Special mention to

and
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, although they all were great. They put protective tarp on the wood floors, did their best to minimize the construction dust during the tear down. The construction went a little longer than quoted; we were told 8 to 10 days but it went 3 weeks. However, this was in the dead of winter and there was a major snow storm that occurred. Bottom line, the wife and I ended up with the beautiful bathroom we envisioned. I would definitely use them again and if you want a high quality professional remodel I highly recommend

During the final week of the project
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
left me an invoice for additional charges that equaled almost half of our original contracted amount. Only one of these charges had been discussed with me prior to receiving the bill, and it had been inflated to 400% of the charge I had originally been told. Once I expressed concern about the charges and asked for more explanation, he left and never came back to finish my job.
To date, I have paid our contracted amount in full plus over $1400 in additional charges (labor and materials). He is asking for additional $2000. I have made multiple attempts to have him come back and finish the work that was not completed and explain the charges. Each time he has told me that he has documentation to "back everything up" but he has been too busy to meet. He has made it clear that he won't provide receipts for the overages I have already paid or even come discuss the matter until I agree to pay him the additional $2000. He filed a
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
on my home and took me to small claims court (he never showed up for the hearing). I have had to hire an attorney, take time off work for court, and pay someone else to finish the job and fix his mistakes.
Hiring
York Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was the worst mistake I have made in regards to my kitchen remodel. I thought I did my research prior to hiring him, but there just wasn't any reviews out there. Hopefully other homeowners will find this review and not make the same mistake I did.
