    Coastal Design Builders, LLC.
We DO NOT recommend this builder. The builder, Alan Wheeler, had terrible communication throughout the project. He consistently missed appointments with us and subcontractors. He neglected phone calls and emails on many occasions. We were promised a move in date before Thanksgiving. That promise was moved to Christmas, then to mid January, then to mid February. We finally moved in the last week in MARCH! He had trouble getting the CO because of numerous code violations. It is now mid April and we still have a lengthy punch list. Our dishwasher isn't even secured to the cabinets yet. Every time we open the door it falls forward. Even though there is 1% of the project scheduled to be paid for exterior paint, he refuses to even paint the non treated exterior wood. We agreed to paint the interior of the house. It is spelled out very clearly that we are responsible for INTERIOR paint. Alan didn't budget for exterior paint and now wants to be paid over $2500 for exterior paint that he refuses to do. Picture 1: This stair rail originally failed code inspection because at the top stair it was NINE INCHES short. Minimum code is 34" and the top stair measured 25". This stair rail was in place for months before the inspection and was not noticed or corrected. You can see where the support brackets used to be in the picture. Picture 2: We chose and paid for a upgraded drain for our custom shower. The installers used a standard commercial drain instead. Alan was made aware of this at the time the shower was installed. To date, not only has he not installed the upgraded custom drain unit, he has only said that he will give us some credit at some future date. It is a beautiful shower with a drain that is typical of a dormitory. We have to look at this egregious mistake EVERY morning when we take a shower. We are reminded that we didn't get what we wanted from Coastal Design Builders, EVERY morning when we take a shower. Picture 3: This gap in the doors to the master bedroom is on the top and bottom of the doors. Though it may seem trivial the reason for it and Alan's excuse for it is worth noting. We asked that something be done about this gap because it is egress for pests and drafts. Alan informed us that he "normally" puts gaps such as this in doors so that the "pressure test" will pass. He then went on to explain how the house has to pressurize at a certain level and he left this gap in the door so that the house would pass. I was dismissed when I asked him to close this gap. This is typical of the excuses that were made for many of the shortcomings in construction errors. Picture 4: This is a picture of the banister that, originally, did not pass code either because it did not meet the minimum height requirement. We had custom ordered the balusters for this banister. In order to meet code and get the CO, the builder had to replace the custom balusters with these cheap Lowe's ones. Over 6 weeks later now, and they have not been replaced. Picture 5: This picture represents one of the biggest complaints we had throughout construction. The upstairs bathroom was designed incorrectly. The mistake was not caught until the cabinets were installed and the builder realized that the door to the bathroom wouldn't open because the cabinet jutted out 4 inches too far. By this time we had pleaded with Alan to communicate any and all changes to us before he made them. We observed that instead of correcting the problem by moving the closet wall to allow for the 28" door to be moved to the left, he cut the door down to 24". This is the main door going in to the only bathroom upstairs and the builder decided, without any input from us, that we would be OK with what is typical of a small closet door. We insisted that the wall be moved. The picture is the new closet wall that is hardly 90 degrees and the base molding is run behind the door casing at the bottom but the door casing is flush at the top. This wall is still not 90 degrees and the base molding still runs behind the door casing. Overall, we have many many more stories such as these. We made a huge mistake contracting with Alan and Coastal Design Builders. Please feel free to reach out to us if you wish.

The service provider scheduled and showed up in a timely manner. The service provider provided a bid that was very competitive. The representative was very knowledgeable with what needed to be accomplished. Unfortunately this was an insurance claim that is now in litigation. I plan on using this provided in the near future
