My daughter is a special needs person and was seen by a neurologist there, Dr. Paul Pritchard. I found Dr. Pritchard and his assitant Paula to be engaging, professional, knowledgeable, and frankly, delightful. I have 3 issues-they are too far from me, which is not their fault. I was new to the area so not familiar with where I was going and so once I realized how far I had to go this was an issue for me. MUSC has a policy that if you want to switch to another doctor in their employ, even if it is not in the same practice or area, the previous doctor has to approve. As if I don't have the right to choose my own doctor! So they put through a request to Dr. Pritchard to approve us moving to Dr. Schmidt, who is 20 minutes from me, and they are required to respond within 7 days, and we never got a response. The 2nd issue is Dr. Pritchard only works 2 half days a week. Which leads to the 3rd issue-delayed response. My daughter had her blood taken, and two weeks later I got the blood work in the mail. Her Tegretol levels were high and she was having seizures which is common with over the limit Tegretol. I called, and got a return call two weeks later. My doctor in TN returns calls within 24 hours. In Florida my doctor returned calls every day, or his nurse did. When you have a child with seizures, you don't want to wait 2 weeks for a return phone call or even just two weeks for a call about blood work. Oh, and by the way, when I got a call about the blood work before I got the blood work in the mail, I was told "everything was okay". So if I wasn't educated enough to know high levels of tegretol cause seizures, my daughter would have continued to have seizures for unknown reasons. Once I lowered one dose of tegretol her seizures went away. This was done by my doctor in TN who I called after this incident. One other issue I found a bit disturbing; when I called to make the appointment and I told the person my daughter was a special needs person (she's an adult and I am her legal guardian) she told me I would need to take her to a clinic for "you know, people like that". I kindly explained I have insurance and my daughter has always seen a neurologist for her seizures and that wasn't going to change anytime soon so did she want to make an appointment or did I need to speak to someone else. I have made many appointments with MUSC for my daughter and never encountered this issue again, so I suspect it was just this one individucal, but nevertheless, it happened in regards to this appointment that I am leaving feedback for, so it bears mentioning. It also bears mentioning once more that I did find Dr. Pritchard himself and Paula to be very professional and seriously, delightful. Dr. Pritchard spoke directly to my daughter, which most doctors just ignore her and try to speak to me. Even though sometimes it is hard to understand her speech, Dr. Pritchard would repeat what he understood so she would repeat what he didn't understand and he would after a few tries completely understand what she said. This is significant that he took the time to do this and showed her this respect. Everyone deserves to be treated this way IMO. I think he is an incredible doctor and if he ran a full time practice and was fully staffed in a way that he was able to respond in a timely manner, even at 1 hour away I would stick with him. I never had the opportunity to speak with him about the blood work issue because once that happened I tried a different doctor who was the most incompetent doctor I have ever encountered in my entire life (Dr. John Lucas, also a neurologist) and decided I would just drive back and forth to TN twice a year and stick with a doctor I have confidence in and have been with for over 10 years.

I showed up on time for the appt. The female at the front desk was polite, but her work area was cluttered and unorganized. I was left with the impression that the office either did not provide her adequate training, their expectations were pretty low, or no one enforced high standards. I made my co-payment and took a seat.

I was called back for the NCS in 5-10 minutes. The female technician performing the preliminary parts of the NCS obviously knew her job well and was easy to talk to. Quite informal and relaxed although she shared some information I think she probably could have kept to herself, but that could be attributed to being in the south. After the preliminary work was done, the doctor came in to complete the study. The NCS involved some moderate electrical shocks/pain, but they were of very short duration and tolerable. The doctor explained the procedure and completed the study relatively quickly and I was on my way. The overall experience was unremarkable.

    Cordes, Dr. Dena
Ms. Cordes is very kind and compassionate, but also objective; supportive, offers constructive feedback, follows up, returns calls as soon as possible, and keeps notes and refers to them for future sessions.  She has helped me considerably in dealing with some major changes in my life.
