This home is a 60-70 year old rustic cabin with real wood walls. When they came for the estimate, I was VERY SPECIFIC not to drill into the real wood walls in the living room, they were to do those ones from the outside because it would be possible to patch and hide the holes out there under paint as opposed to the unfinished wood walls in the living room. She wrote this down on the work order. The day they were to start work, I met the 2 guys over there who were going to be doing it. I was also very clear with him not to drill into the wood walls, to do those ones from the outside. He told me that was no problem. I also expressed concern with the other rooms as they are the old faux wood paneling. I was concerned that they would not be easy to patch like sheet rock is, and that the wood would splinter. He asked if I was putting crown molding up. I told him I was and then showed it to him. He said that he could put all the holes right along the top of the ceiling so that they would be covered by the crown.
When the work was done and I came to look at it, it's like I never even spoke to a single employee of this company!!! They drilled through my wood walls, the faux paneling splintered all over the place, it was not a clean cut hole like I was assured it would be and he drilled the holes anywhere from 4-6 inches down from the ceiling, NOT at the top like he said he would.
When I sent a detailed and distressed email, I was contacted by the owner of the company. He came out to look at what I was talking about. He acted like it was no big deal and did not accept any responsibility (I'm sorry my crew messed up). He did offer a solution in terms of doing a different type of crown where you lay a 1x6 along the wall first and then put the crown. Only when I pointed out that that was going to add more work, materials and therefore cost, did he offer to bring me some 1x6s. Which they did. I still had to point out that it was going to cost me extra to fix it in terms of more wood for my trim guy to stain and install and that when I found out exactly how much that would be, I would take it off my total invoice.
My trim guy was delayed a couple of weeks so in the mean time I sent a payment for half of my invoice. Before I went to send the final amount, I thought I would just double check the rest of what they were supposed to do. It was then that I discovered that they had not put down the vapor barrier under my house like they were supposed to and like they sent me a bill for, nor did they insulate the entire back wall of my first floor (which I had not realized initially from inside, since they were supposed to access it from the crawl space, thereby minimizing the holes inside that needed to be patched). I find it very disturbing that they billed me for work not completed in an area that I was unlikely to notice unless I went out of my way to check.
In short, they ruined my walls after ignoring very specific instructions, and billed me for the whole job without completing it.
