    Magill Vision Center

The initial visit was more thorough than I would have ever imagined, even for someone like me who?s been nearsighted and stigmatic since her mid-teens, that is to say, a good portion of my life.  Therefore, I was very anxious to know if we could proceed with adjusting my eyesight.  When Dr. Waring introduced himself and explained the different possibilities available, I was not only relieved, but also charged with an energy that revealed my lifelong dream of awaking to a discernable morning light.

The following visits (there were two more) to the MUSC Magill Vision Center revealed the professional approach the entire equip demonstrated.  Everyone was courteous and professional as one would expect, but it was the certitude that only capable seasoned technicians have, something that constantly accompanied every examination I needed prior to the surgery.

Dr. Waring suggested lens implants and that is what we did, first in one eye to be followed by the other nearly a week later.  The day of my operation, I didn?t know what to expect, so I was a little nervous to say the least.  This feeling was quickly abated by how I was regarded, pampered and put on the same level as every human being in the hospital (yes, even nurses are humans!).  I was reassured through each step of the process, even to what I might experience, and they were emotionally stimulating.  In the first part procedure, I experienced patterns and colors, beautiful and fantastic that I cannot to this day easily describe in its entirety - my profession is within the visual arts.  All of these experiences added to a disbelief; that is until the next morning when I opened my eyes and told my husband what time the alarm clock was showing.
I danced, sang and played, as I felt strong without a care as if I were a youngster again.  Even then, I had to get used to this new state of being after a lifetime in my condition; I was nearly -12!

I feel reborn!  Many thanks to Dr. Waring and Dr. Vogel and the whole team at the Magill Vision Center.

This was my life?s dream.  A dream come true.     Molte Grazie!

There are no words powerful enough to convey my faith in Dr. George Waring as a skilled eye surgeon.  I came to my first appointment with Dr. Waring with unique and challenging diseases in each eye, Amblyopia, Fuchs Dystrophy, Pseudoexfoliation and maturing cataracts. From my first appointment to post surgery I received the very best of care. Everyone on Dr. Waring’s team excel in their positions and all questions were answered during appointments. I never felt rushed.  My cataract surgeries were performed on 1-19-16 and 1-26-16. And my stigmatisms were corrected. The results, miraculous! For the first time in 68 years I am without heavy glasses and my vision is 20/20! Thanks to Dr. Waring and all of his wonderful caring staff at Magill Vision Center.  This has been a life changing experience for me. Dr. Waring’s abilities as a surgeon, his easy manner and his integrity make him a standout in his field. I will continue to recommend him without reservation.

Dr. George O. Waring IV performed refractive lens exchange on both of my eyes in January 2016.  At my last exam on February 24, my vision tested better than 20/20 in both eyes.  I do not need glasses, and it is great to be able to see at all distances. I enjoy not having to use a magnifying makeup mirror to apply my makeup and reading the paper, driving and watching TV without glasses.  I was totally relaxed during the procedures, and I had absolutely no pain during surgery and afterward.  Dr. Waring is an extremely skillful surgeon with a great bedside manner, and his staff is very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.  I would not trust my eye care to anyone but Dr. Waring.

It went very well, they were accommodating about school aged son's schedule, got us a simultaneous appointment quickly.  The staff and nurses who did the preliminary (actually most) of the assessments were excellent.  They have very up to date equipment and were able to accomplish al the usual tests faster than I have ever had them done, but thoroughly.  They understood and were able to inform us about insurance issues.  Excellent experience, (also very nice offices).

The doctor and assistant were great.  The staff who assisted with choosing frames, fitting and followup were TERRIBLE!
    1.  After enduring a couple weeks of headaches, I went back.  They discovered the prescription was incorrect.
    2. When purchasing the frames, I noticed one temple spring action was loose.  I was told they would fix it.  After returning several times for the ill fitting frames, they acknowledged the temple was broken and replaced them.
    3.  I've worn glasses for over 30 years.  I know what they're supposed to feel like.  I had to return FOUR times for ill fitting frames!  Each time I had to take off work.
    4.  I finally gave up and have suffered for a year with glasses which slide off my face.
    5. I went to another doctor for my annual checkup (I've had to switch due to insurance changes).  I was immediately told the glasses I was wearing were too small.  The temple was too short.  They asked, "Who sold you these?".  When I was talking the another assistant about new frames, she noticed the same thing.  She asked, "Why did they sell you temples this short, these don't fit you."  WOW!!!
So now I've had to buy another pair of frames (out of pocket, because insurance won't cover another pair until next year), because Eye Care Specialties of Charleston staff sold me frames which they should have known could not be fitted to me correctly.  Shame on you!!!
After calling several times, all I get is, "We're sorry about your experience.  Would you like to talk to a manager?"
I've talked to managers several times...they don't do anything except say, "We're sorry...."
Wouldn't recommend them at all...and NEVER returning again.

    Lee, Dr. William H.
Excellent experience.  Was able to make the appointment in a timely manner even though I was a new patient whereas my previous opthamologist I had been going to made me wait almost 4 weeks for an appointment with him.
Dr. Lee spent and appropriate amount of time with me and did not seem rushed like my previous doctor, who I have stopped seeing because he was always rushed in his time with me, somewhat uncommunicative and several times rude to his assistants.

    Black, Dr. Robert T.
This was a comprehensive eye exam, to update my prescription.
I hold a Commercial Pilot License, so I have always taken my eye exams very seriously.
Dr. Black was thorough, and corrected an error in a preceding providers assessment of my astigmatism, which Dr. Black assessed as practically non-existent. This saved me from what would have been an unnecessary--and uncomfortable--adjustment to my prescription.
I was very impressed with Dr. Black's thoroughness, and I have much experience with eye exams.
I shall return for all my future eye exams.

The appointment went very well, Dr. Virgil Alfaro was very kind, patient, and used humor which made my mother very happy to be in his care. He showed us a video about what was going on with her eye, he offered to have us contact him with any questions and concerns and we set up another appointment as well. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful and I would recommend Dr. Alfaro and Retina Consultants of Charleston to anyone!

The staff seem competent, but you will wait FOREVER. Took me two hours to see a doctor who subsequently spent 5 or 6 minutes with me. I think the multitude of people going through this place make it impossible for staff to treat you as anything beside a number. If you want personalized care, don't go here.
