Deck Building reviews in Portsmouth

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • Rich Bonvegna is one of the most reliable, pleasant and trustworthy people I have worked with. This particular job was the installation of a ceiling fan, but he has done MUCH more for us, including strengthening our deck, which was a huge job. I can't say enough good things about him, and his company.

  • It was a major job and it was excellent. You can't have a better relationship with a contractor. One things that he did which I thought was extremely valuable and very unusual was that at one point before the work in the bathroom started, he had every subcontractor that he worked with come out. We spent an hour ow two around the table discussing the pros and possible glitches in the plans that we presented through our architect. We had a chance to sift through them, change a little bit here and tweak it there but I knew each one of the people, the flooring people for the tile, the cabinet people who built the cabinet for the vanity and the cabinetry guy who did the linen closet, we had the plumber and the electrician all sitting around the table. I've never had that happen to me before in any project when there were multiple people subcontracting. He's like my son. He has become a wonderful go-to person. This is a condo community and he has proven himself to be a worthy carpenter, a fine honest business man and fair priced as well.

  • All work was done professionally, in a timely manner, including coordination with all subcontractors and vendors. Quality of life of our family is greatly improved as a result of this renovation.

  • The project went as scheduled. They arrived early, worked steadily and completed the job in the time scheduled. Rich applied his usual attention to detail and standards for quality materials and workmanship. His suggestions and recommendations were beneficial to the outcome of the project and reflected his typical concern for a quality outcome.

Update: Rich just dropped by to close out our contract and reported that he had been able to purchase the materials for our deck at less than the initial round of vendor bids that he used to develop our contract price. As a result, he presented us with a check rather than a bill for the contract balance.
This was a pleasant surprise, as my wife and I had accepted the original price and were prepared to make our final payment as called for in the contract.
Although the rebate check was a surprise, Rich's integrity in his dealings with us was not.

  • Richard, the owner of A2Z, is professional and conscientious and responds to calls and emails promptly. Although, he used a subcontractor, he was deeply involved with the progress of the project and readily available for problems and concerns. The project was billed on a materials and hourly labor basis because it entailed potentially unforeseeable problems associated with demolishing the existing deck, repairing water and structural damage, sealing against further water intrusion, and preventing further deterioration.
The home is waterfront, sitting less than 50 feet from the water's edge and subject to severe weather from all sides.  Additional planning was required to properly support the hot tub,  which sits on the deck. The deck had not been properly supported by the previous contractor and there was evidence of sagging.
The crew arrived on schedule and worked hard the entire day without the down time I've experienced elsewhere. They were courteous and patient, answering my many questions and addressing any concerns. It was very hot and yet they expressed only positive comments about it being the nature of their type of work. No complaining on this crew!
They took great care removing the existing deck railings and clear acrylic panels and storing them for later use. Patiently, they tried to assist us in removing the existing deck boards, which we sought to save for another project, but, which were unusable for this project. They sawed/grinded away the huge (approximately 18" wide by 4" deep), deteriorating PSL beams used in cantilevering the deck, placed appropriate sealing/flashing material to protect against water intrusion, capped the piers with aluminum and additional flashing, rebuilt the deck (spacing the joists 12" on center to prevent sagging/bounce associated with the use of PVC decking), and replaced railings and disturbed siding. The project also entailed installing new columns to support the deck now that the cantilevering was removed. They made every effort to reuse material when feasible to save me money.
Richard strives to provide high quality services at a fair price. He billed me thousands of dollars less on this project than his original estimate, because it went smoothly. I highly recommend and I will be using A2Z in the future.

  • a2z came as soon as I called, gave me advice on how to replace them as
inexpensively as possible, and I followed Rich's advice. I ordered the
exact door frames from the reference # he showed me. One of his crew
came to replace all the hardware, etc. So, what could have cost up to
$700, cost half that. And, of course, a2z is always on time, on budget,
and a pleasure to work with.

  • From start to finish Mark and his crew provided excellent service and were a pleasure to have working for us. They were all wonderful and the addition looks better than we could have possibly hoped for. Highly recommend!

  • EMAILED ON THE DAY I BOUGHT THE BIG DEAL (OCTOBER 2011). NO RESPONSE. EMAILED AGAIN. NO RESPONSE. I CALLED. HE ASKED ME TO CALL BACK AGAIN IN THE SPRINGTIME 2012 TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. I CALLED AS INSTRUCTED. TOOK A FEW TIMES TO GET HIM ON THE PHONE. APPOINTMENT WAS MADE. HE NEVER SHOWED UP, BUT GAVE AN EXCUSE. I OFFERED A SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO COME. AGAIN, NO CALL, AND NEVER SHOWED UP.

  • This was my first experience with a "Today's Big Deal" offered by Angie's List, and it was horrible.  I purchased the service on 10/13/11, and the work was finally completed on 7/6/12 after numerous phone calls to Lorenzo.  He showed up the first time to look at the deck as scheduled, and that was the last time he came when agreed.  He delayed the power wash until so late in the season that he said he couldn't finish it because it was too cold.  I called several times during the spring to get it done, but he didn't show up.  Finally, on a sunny, hot day in July, he brought 2 men out and they finished the work (without cleaning it again).  Unfortunately, the product he used on my mahogany deck specifically states not to apply in direct sunlight, so it looks horrible.
The only thing that seems to have been done fairly well was the railing paint job (although we will see if it peels in a few months).  Unfortunately, I had told Lorenzo at the time he first came out that I was having the house painted, so the railings did not need to be done.  He forgot that, and charged me an additional $126 at the end of the day.  When I reminded him that he wasn't supposed to do it, he said the contract specifically stated that railings were extra.
There is one additional point that I have to mention, because it is indicative of the type of excuses he gave and the "quality" of his work.  Once when I called and asked why he didn't show up as promised, he said they came but it looked like the work had already been done.  Remember his comment that the railings had to be painted because they were peeling so badly?
I would not only not recommend this contractrator, I would request a refund if it wouldn't be such a hassle.  I have spent enough time dealing with this man.

  • We waited a bit for the windows to arrive but once they did Rich and team had them installed quickly.  The tenants reported Rich did a great job and were minimally inconvenienced. As long distant homeowners, we appreciate Rich's hard work and honest nature.
