  • Mostly this went well. The sales rep, John Hughes, was punctual and personable; however, he's also the source of my one complaint. When we spoke with him, we made it clear we wanted durable, energy efficient windows, and were willing to pay for a more expensive product if it's better. He recommended Alside Intermezzo windows, which he said were solid, durable windows, and that the energy efficiency, dictated by government standards, would be there no matter what window we buy. But when the windows were delivered and installed, I noticed the label on every window showed the window is only Energy Star certified if installed in various regions (diagrammed on a map of the US), which did not include my part of Rhode Island. Part of the lesson here is caveat emptor--I should have researched the windows myself and told John exactly what make and model we wanted, instead of relying on him to pick a window based on our conversation, but I also feel we were clear about energy efficiency being a priority. I would've happily paid another $1000 or so to get windows which are more efficient, especially since the tax credit would have been worth $500. Anyway, although we don't qualify for a tax credit (because in my location they don't count as Energy Star), I'm sure the windows are more energy efficient than what we had, and probably aren't much different from a window which would be Energy Star in our region, since these windows are rated for Long Island and Cape Cod. Besides that, everything else was great. The other people who came out to check measurements and actually do the installation were punctual, professional, and very efficient, and the installation seemed to go very well: windows installed properly with a minimum of fuss, mess cleaned up, caulking neat and carefully done, insulation placed properly, glass cleaned at the end, etc.

  • The best way for me to describe how it went in one word: disappointment.  I feel Handy Bernie misrepresented his expertise when it came to finish work, re-finishing a floor, and painting in general.  His initial quote to us included a very specific reference to how he was going to take the extra steps involved in the prep work so essential to a good interior paint job.  I learned that it didn't necessarily carry through to the actual work.  Casings around windows were cut too short, trim and chair rail, as well as baseboard wood trim were frequently cut "short"  The solution to this in many cases was to fill these voids with caulk and paint it.  I have measured some of these caulk-fills, and some of them are almost an inch wide!  There was a point in the job that he needed to take a week of personal time for a family emergency.  Understandable.  However, he returned from overseas more than a week later and told us he would be done within a day!  My wife and I were so surprised by this that we asked him to let us know what he felt had to be finished.  He replied that once he was done, we were to go around the house and make notes about things that required "touch-ups", etc.  I thought the contractor was supposed to go around and perform these checks and note-taking, then act upon them by finishing the job. The truth is that Handy Bernie had  his next job lined up the following day!  This was shocking to us because we felt there was at least another 4-5 full days of work left.  We decided to cut our losses at this point because we had been virtually living out of boxes and a recreational vehicle for months.  Although I am not a professional contractor, I have been a DIY-type for many years, and I can honestly say that I could have done a much better job.  Seeing that I have a full-time job however, my wife and I decided we needed "professional" help.  I have been hesitant to review Handy Bernie publicly, but I am still finding his work lacking in a new area every day.  I have had to now hire another finish work carpenter to come in and repair Handy Bernie's work.  I wish I could have come to Angie's List with a Good review of the Handy Bernie Company, but I am not able to do so.  I would never recommend Handy Bernie LLC to do any work for any of my family or friends.  Handy Bernie is still owed a bit of money (8-10%), which we have placed in escrow, in the event he decides to come back and try to make good on a contract that I feel he did not honor.  I do not expect that he will though.

  • My house had been gutted by a cleaning
company who decided not to complete the work. I interviewed Steve from Cormier
Construction who gave a very competitive quote which included many changes from
the original house design. I was very impressed his answers to my questions
regarding the renovations. My designs completely changed the layout of my
house. My design including moving windows, adding an exterior door,
removing garage doors and replacing with 2- 6' sliding window, moving my
kitchen from the back of the house to the front, replacing a picture window
with a 5' sliding window. Expanding main bathroom and children's bedrooms,
relocating my laundry room to the main level and lastly turning the garage into
    a great room.

Cormier Construction was able to work from my
computer generated designs, Steve made design change suggestions along the way which
made perfect sense, and we ended up incorporating those changes. Examples of
these suggestions were not closing off the laundry room with a door, this
allowed us to hear when laundry was completed, changing a two-level island
design to a single level do to the fact that I had low ceiling height and it
would give a better overall appearance. Turning a plain master bath into
a true en suite with a massive 6' shower with double shower heads. He also
suggested using a skip trowel finish on my ceilings. Steve's employees
and subcontractors were totally respectful, professional and extremely skilled.
The construction crew did a phenomenal job with the remodeling, I actually had
them flip flop windows, moving one shorter window to my laundry room and moving
that longer window to my dining room. As part of my designs I had walls
moved and removed, closets created where there weren't any and door added.
They also installed my newly designed kitchen with Center Island as well,
it's just amazing. The plasterer did an amazing job, the walls are like glass
and his skip trowel on for my ceilings and closets are just incredible. The
flooring and tile subcontractor installed 1400 sf of chocolate bamboo strand
click-loc flooring in just 2 days! He also installed a mortar bed mosaic
    tile shower floor in the master bath, with stone and glass accent tile border;
in the main bath he tiled the floor and walls with a glass accent tile and
installed floor tile in my laundry room, all of which took less than a week to
do. I must tell you the finished product is exactly like my designs. I am
beyond pleased. Everyone of Steve's subcontractor’s attention to detail
was amazing, my house literally looks absolutely beyond stunning. I loved
my house before the house fire, but now it's truly my dream house and it's all
because of Cormier Construction and his subcontractors and their ability to
make my dream a reality. Thank you Steve, Luke, Dan, Matt and Joe, I am
truly gratefully for everything you did for me.

  •     From the start  Mr. Clark  was professional and informative with great ideas and design suggestions.  He listened to what  changes I wanted for my home and provided them within my budget
The craftsmanship and wood working skills provide daily complements  from the custom kitchen cabinets to the farmers porch where most of my entertaining takes place.
My experience with Mr. Clark and his crew was a confident, exciting and informative one.

  • They were very prompt, knowledgeable, had terrific follow up and customer service. We had some concerns with lead since with live in a home built in the 1700's. They did a plan on how to minimize the exposure to the lead and how it was to be cleaned up when they were finished. They had a premiere specialist company in the state come out and make sure none of the lead dust got into our home and they paid someone else to do the cleaning. I thought that was pretty impressive. We plan on using them again.

  • The projects that Joe has done for us have gone almost without a hitch.  Like I said before the house is not square and that made for a vision that I truly do not have.
