House Painting reviews in Sharon

To be blunt it was a nightmare. I should have paid better attention to the bad review that was previously given by an Angie's List member who owned a large victorian house like ours. She was spot on mostly but I suspect was way too generous with her final rating. I unfortunately was swayed to contract with Neb Sormaz by the other much smaller job reviews that apparently earned him a good rating.  After I signed the contract and paid my 9000 down in July 2013(two $4500 checks written to him on July 17th and cashed on July 19th and 22nd), Neb came by and powerwashed the house. Unfortunately he also shot through debris into my music room through the base of my windows which soaked my drapes and wet my antique grand piano. He did remedy that by dry cleaning the drapes. Neb  then hired a carpenter to put up the crown moulding that I had already purchased onto my front porch and was planning on doing myself.. He had told me they could do that as part of the job as well as sand and paint the porch floor. Well I should have done it myself after all. The workmanship was poor and it took over 2 weeks for the carpenter to partially finish it (a job I could have accomplished with better results in 2 days). I had to explain to the "carpenter" how to miter into complex corners. It seems Neb does not really have people who are permanently employed by him. Apparently he bids a job at a seemingly reasonable price then goes out and hires someone.
The saga continued with Neb or his hirelings intermittently showing up for short periods of time and doing some scraping. Neb then asks for the $5000 draw that he was only supposed to get when the windows were done and everything was prepped. Well only about 1/4 of the house was actually prepped at that time and the windows were not (and still are not) done. He poor mouthed me about how he had other bills that he needed to pay and that he was stiffed by this or that person and could I give him the draw despite not being done per contract. I stupidly acquiesced.
(Note that I also let him put materials on my personal account with a local lumberyard of about $500 as well as gave him 2 $500 Lowe's gift cards to buy the paint)
Neb talked a good game but after that he rarely showed up. He would have a minion come by and mask the windows which would then sit untouched for several weeks without being painted then it would rain and wet the paper which would partially to completely come off. I would call to express the stupidity and wastefulness of this then he would show up and promise he would get on it and the cycle would repeat. This happened several times. Finally winter came and I had no significant painting done and Neb was nowhere to be found. He left about 10 cans of paint that I paid for out in the yard and they froze over a miserably cold winter and were ruined.
Also a whole bunch of garbage and partially shredded masking paper and tape stuck to my windows (I have numerous photos to document it).
In perusing Angie's List that winter, I found out that several reviews were placed praising Neb for doing jobs in late summer/fall when he was supposed to be doing mine! Suffice it to say that added insult to injury.
Come spring I contacted Neb again since I was into the hole with him for roughly 15-16000 without much to show except alot of grief and agitation. His excuse was that he almost suffered a nervous breakdown and couldn't handle the size of the job and he apologized for ruining the paint and having the place look like h*** all winter, and he gave me "his word" that he would make it right. Stupid me again...I gave him another chance. He poor mouthed me again and I agreed to help him buy some paint and supplies even though he ruined what I had purchased before. This probably totaled an additional $300-400.
However, at this time I was so frustrated with the thought of dealing with house painting in the future that I contracted with a siding company to come in and replace my clapboard with vinyl siding replace rotted wood around my pool building windows with composite that wouldn't rot and clad my windowsills with aluminum thus eliminating a whole heap of work that Neb would need to do as well as any future paint work I would have to contract for. I told Neb all he had to do was paint the trim and fix his oversprays that ruined areas that I had previously had painted by someone else that were in a finished state before he oversprayed onto them. I told him to coordinate with the siding people so that when they tore off the clapboard he could easily spray the trim without incurring overspray problems. He disregarded that request and stated that "it would be easier once they were done".
I had specifically instructed Neb to prioritize his work to complete the window glazing and painting as well as fix his oversprays and start with the trim most visible which was the front of the house. He disregarded and focused on the back pool building. Some of the trim Neb did paint on the pool building the last summer peeled off over the winter. He attributed it to the moisture coming from inside the building and suggested I purchase small 1 inch vents that he would place then he would paint the trim again. It made sense so I complied and purchased 200 small vents per his recommendation. He put in some but the job remains unfinished like the rest of his work.
He again wasted the summer and fall only sporadically coming by and doing a little work here and there to make it seem like he was doing something and staving off my ire. After repeated badgering he did have his minions come by one day and remask the pool building windows like the year before. It took several weeks before he returned to paint those window surrounds and when my wife and I saw many sunny days go by without painting then the rain starting we were furious that it was a repeat of the prior year. Before he did paint it,  I instructed him on the proper color scheme but he got it wrong.  When a person pays the money that I did I do not feel that I should have to bulldog or badger someone to do their job if they are a "professional". Every time when I confronted him he claimed how much work he was doing but I know the truth as I have numerous surveillance cameras.

Well we are into winter again and I have masking tape residue on my swimming pool building windows that I will need to personally scrape off. I will also have to look at all the oversprayed areas until the spring when I can hopefully find a reliable painter to finish the considerable remaining amount of trimwork painting and fix the oversprays as well as finish putting in vents.
BTW I checked Angie's List again and of course Neb was doing other jobs instead of mine during the spring/summer/fall.
Also I checked with the Attorney Generals Office of Pennsylvania and found out that Neb's contractors license had expired 1 year before he bid my job and signed a contract. So despite his claims, he is an unlicensed contractor who marketed himself as licensed and that I believe is a case of fraud. I will be pursuing legal action through the local police and courts if necessary to recoup  at least part of my outlay.

Overall we are very happy. There were setbacks and obstacles especially in the bathroom. Andy and Raymond worked extremely hard to overcome them. The original job was to take 3 days but complications with weather and humidity caused the job to take 2 additional days. The guys stuck pretty much to there original estimate. The final product came out even better than expected. We will definitely use Handyman again in the future. Great Job guys!

The job of painting our home was very difficult due to the condition of the wood.  Our home has never looked so good as it does now.  the work was done promptly and efficiently and the prices are reasonable.
