    Plum Creek Electrical
OVERALL: the project was started on 3/3/19 but as of 5/13/19 the project is incomplete; multiple efforts to get them to finish the work have been unsuccessful. The contractor has been paid the full amount (roughly $15K) less $500 (his suggested "hold-back). The incomplete items are: finish the trim on the drywall, correct the electrical outlets, install the carpeting on the stairs and cleanup the construction debris outside the house. Three other contractors associated with this project have all finished their parts with a minimum of hassle, usually within a few days of starting. Problem arose during the installation: PROBLEM 1: HV/AC pipe rerouting: When the HV/AC pipes were re-routed, our furnace stopped functioning on a particularly cold day. The indoor temperature fell to 62 degrees. I placed an emergency call (it was a Saturday) to a HV/AC specialist. He pointed out that the way Plum Creek had rerouted the furnace exhaust HV/AC pipe left a dip in the middle, where condensation water was collecting. This was blocking the furnace exhaust pipe and the furnace pump, sensing the obstruction, was shutting off as a safety measure. The HV/AC specialist advised that the furnace exhaust pipe must be rerouted to slope continuously upwards as it exited the basement. After Plum Creek followed this instruction, the furnace resumed functioning. PROBLEM 2: Dry wall installation: The drywall subcontractor (Tim Siebert) did not follow the contracted method and instead took a short cut, which would have saved him money. I noticed that he installed pink roll insulation between the studs using duct tape applied to one side (only) to hold the pink roll insulation. A part of the yet unfinished work revealed that the insulation had come loose and folded down (picture available on request), meaning there was no insulation in parts of the wall. I showed him the contract, which called for a different method and asked him how he expected the pink roll insulation that he had installed to hold up over the years, supported on one side only by a flimsy piece of duct tape. He agreed to redo it using the contracted method. While I appreciate his willingness to redo the work as contracted, this sort of problem should not have arisen in the first place. I was relying on their expertise to avoid these problems. PROBLEM 3: The 7 spacing: The contract called for making a bulkhead access panel around the water line plumbing. To simplify the construction, they avoided the bulkhead (and associated turns of the drywall) and instead spaced the drywall outer edge at 7 from the basement wall. This sacrificed basement space in favor of their cost-cutting short cut, and led indirectly to a fireplace related complication, see below. PROBLEM 4: Fireplace related: The fireplace was originally on Plum Creeks list of work. I am glad that I got an independent contractor to do this part. Plum Creek evidently did not like this; on some occasions they pointed out that any damage to their work by the fireplace contractor would entail additional cost on my part. I perceived this as needless pressure on me to expect further bills. Coordination with other contractors was a critical part of this job. They got into a needless argument with the fireplace contractor by suggesting a method of installation that, had it been adopted, would have resulted in a fireplace that would not meet local code and would have to be redone (entailing expensive stone removal and reinstallation when I tried to sell the house). I am so glad I hired the independent fireplace contractor. Plum Creek wanted their wall to come out 7 from the basement wall, which would have meant the fireplace would have to be recessed behind the dry wall. To avoid this, Plum Creek suggested filling the back of the fireplace with fire-brick, to move the whole thing forward - this would have resulted in the flame not being directly below the vent - a code violation. PROBLEM 5: As is true with most basements, there was some clutter and objects that needed to be moved around. There was no mention of a separate cost for this work in their estimate and unfortunately, I missed it. During the first week Mr. Soper told me, to the effect: Hey, I am not paying these guys to move this stuff around; you need to take care of them. This should have been factored into the initial estimate. My wife and I are both senior citizens, and moving all of the clutter on a Sunday was a strain on both of us. PROBLEM 6: They were paid roughly $5K before the job started. Midway Mr. Soper made a request for an additional $5K. I asked him if that was in the contract. He said no. I decide to pay him, as I felt pressured; the last thing I wanted was an unhappy contractor. This and other dealings with Mr. Soper were stressful to me, as they represented deviations from an agreed upon contract. Before the contract was signed he would use the phrase "no problem" quite profusely; once the work began, he seemed to be looking for problems and reasons for getting more money out of me. PROBLEM 7: the electrical outlets are poorly installed. They do not rest firmly against the dry wall. The latch on the door to a storage space does not close properly. The trim has not been installed on the dry wall. The carpeting has not been installed (this item alone was listed in the contract as a $1400 item).

    Diamond Construction & Remodeling Inc
We hired Diamond in the past to finish a basement for us and they did a wonderful job. Next to that basement was an ugly unfinished laundry room as well as an outdated bathroom. They created a small hallway separating the bathroom from the laundry room by installing a doorway between them. They finished them with new flooring, drywalling, unique plastering design and painted. All the finishing from the wall trim to the new lighting fit our needs perfectly. They installed a new vanity, toilet and new walk in shower unit along with some accessories of our choosing like the mirror, vanity lights and towel rack. We were kept informed the whole way of the process from start to finish. Any time we wanted to change/add/remove a detail, Rich and Doug were able to accommodate all of our needs. The Laundry room ceiling was sprayed black so that all the cables, pipes and wires were invisible. We really love the look of our now finished laundry & bathroom and would recommend them to anyone. The best part about their service is that they allow you to customize it to your needs whether you want them to pick something up for you or save a few dollars and get it yourself. They are very flexible with your schedule and I trust them 100%. I'm looking forward to future projects with them!

Chris Dallabas Sweet Success Contracting is a one stop shop for a wide array of home contracting work. I found them under plaster repair and when he came to give me an estimate I learned that he could do much more than that. I used Sweet Success for almost everything that I needed done in the home. He had helpful recommendations in terms of how to approach different repairs. For my bathroom remodeling, I handled the design work and picked out the components and pain colors. I believe this is why his prices are lower than bathroom design firms. The quality of Sweet Successs work is very good. Chris has a lot of experience and has seen everything before, which helps him to give an accurate estimate. He is careful with his estimates. Sweet Success will always be my first call for home contracting.

    Beiler Brothers Asphalt LLC
This company was excellent. I highly recommend them for driveways. They were timely, polite, professional. They did a really nice job on my driveway and were very reasonable with their pricing. I needed to make a few last minute adjustments and they were very accommodating. They came quickly to give an estimate and scheduled within a month despite the busy time of year when Everton is rushing to get their jobs done before winter. If you are getting an asphalt driveway I would definitely call this company. I give them an A+

    Diamond Construction & Remodeling Inc
Diamond construction did a great job remodeling our basement into a home theater room. From scratch, they tore out the old wall paneling and framed a new wall using 2 by 4's and insulated the concrete block. They installed drywall with a knockdown finish, added electrical outlets and switches, installed track lighting as well as recessed lights, put in a new black drop ceiling insulated with sound deadening fiberglass, reworked the duck work, carpeted the steps and framed the sides of my open ended stairway. In addition to that they installed a window, a sliding barn door, framed a steel I beam and put post wrap around a support beam. They were always punctual showing up exactly when they said they would and keeping me informed of the progress they were making as well as any changes. They would work with my schedule as well allowing me extra time to complete some of my own task like painting and hanging cabinets. Also we had a superior floating floor put in that has a great wood texture to it and is extremely durable. Anytime we chose to add a little more into the project they were very understanding and very reasonable on their pricing. They allowed us to pick out a lot of our own additions and they would install them for us as well as us trusting them decorative purchases. They did a wonderful job and our home theater looks fantastic even without furniture. Our basement is so warm and cozy and we have received tons of complements about it. Both owners Rich and Doug are very honest men with integrity, NEVER once did I feel taken advantage of or cheated. Thank you guys!!

    MT&R Basement Waterproofing & Foundations
Mike did a great job, under difficult circumstances.  His boss passed away the week he was supposed to work on the job, and in the midst of taking over the company business, he and his crew did a nice job with the drainage issues on our home.  He also took the time to explain things to me.

    Advanced Basement Solutions
Advanced Basement Solutions fit me in within less than a week's time.  We were in the inspection stage of buying a house, and the house inspector found some potential drainage and mold problems in the basement.  Advanced Basement Solutions was booked up, but they found a way to squeeze me in that week.  They came out and did an estimate.  They were so honest, they explained the number one solution would be to do something that they could only do part of - they could put in the internal french drain and external grate drain, but not the concrete pad outside the basement patio door where they water problem was occurring.  Thus, they were willing to lose my business by being totally honest with me about the best solution.  I tried to pay them for their estimate, but they declined.  I see why they get such good ratings on Angie's List!

    Foundation Station Inc
Jason provided the estimate was provided in a few days after setting up an appointment.  Understandably things are busy due to the rainy season but luckily they were able to fit us in. The workers, Steve, Brendan and few other arrived promptly and were very courteous.  In 3 days the work was completed. The floor looks smooth and they left the area very clean.  The day after the work was completed we had heavy rains and the system worked perfectly. The pump pipe drains into our downspout to get the water away from the foundation.  We are so happy to have a dry basement finally!   We highly recommend Foundation Station.

    AquaGuard Systems Inc
I cannot explain how wonderful Aquaguard personnel, the crew that worked on the project. My husband was very ill whenthis job started and was bed ridden. Keith the crew supervisor and the workers would go in and make sure he was informed on their progress. My daughter was there when this was going on and they helped her with anything that she needed help with.A large tree fell across our road when they were working on our wall and they immediately stopped doing the work they were doing and moved the tree which they knew neither my daughter nor I could do.Unfortunately, my husband passed away before the project was completed and did not get to see the excellent  job that they did for us. He did tell me that they were the best and most honest people he had ever worked with (and he was a real fuss budget).I can only sing praises for them and would recommend them in a heartbeat. Keith the crew supervisor has made several trips back just to check on things for me..Again thank each and everyone at Aqua Guard for their professionalism, compassion and just going above their call of duty.Madelyn S. ACR Kitchen & Bath
We really liked them although we didn't end up going with them. He was very professional, very helpful, had a lot of interesting ideas and he got the job done right. We were invited in the show room and we began to pick the products we would use, very great company. We were looking for someone who could do more complicated structural things in our basement but if we were doing a straight line remodel, we would have picked them.
