The owner inspected our chimney, gave feedback on areas that we were concerned with, and at no charge corrected one minor issue to make us feel at ease. Great job, very professional, and would hire again!

One of the big fears on such an old fireplace is hearing that the old construction isn't good enough anymore. Gary is a common sense kind of guy, as he put is 'it is what it is' and although it does have its drawbacks compared to modern day chimneys it still works. You just have to clean it more often as soot builds up quicker on the old jagged brick construction. I'm good with that!. His bigger concern was the 82 year old cast iron damper... if it breaks well then I have some decisions to make, as it is not available an longer. As other people noted, put down tarps/covers on everything, including his path in/out. If your looking for a common sense person to give you an honest opinion of your fireplaces condition, along with a good cleaning, The Chimney Wizard is your go to place, it will be mine now.

Brendan's partner has retired so he is in the process of taking over and renaming the company, Brendan Flynn Gas Services.  As such it takes him a bit of time to follow up so be patient.  he is good

Wells & Sons was great to work with.   The lady who answers the phone was very pleasant and helpful and delivered an excellent first impression and was able to work around my limited schedule.   Guys showed up within the allotted time frame and performed the work as requested.  Both gentlemen were very professional and left my house cleaner than when they came.
I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

The Chimney Wizard was very professional with friendly and responsive service.  Prompt call back when we requested if the appointment could be rescheduled, and on time arrival and completion of the job.  Will definitely use again!

We contracted with A Champion Chimney & Masonry as part of an Angie?s List ?deal? for $66 (prepaid) to inspect and clean our fireplace.  Never before had a chimney sweep come out to our home and taken less than 20-30 minutes in the performance of this routine work and to otherwise do a thorough job, so it was a surprise when A Champion took a mere 5 minutes or so to conduct their inspection and clean our fireplace.

Their hurried 5-minute endeavor included an inspection in the form of cursory two-second peek of our flue from the bottom that yielded statements from one of the two techs (Mason) that: 1) ours was among ?the worst he?d ever seen?; 2) that our fireplace in its existing condition represented a ?fire hazard?; 3) that the proper brushes/tools to do a thorough cleaning were not on hand; and, 4) that a follow-up visit (at additional cost) would be required to remedy the situation.  Our fireplace is used sporadically and serviced regularly at intervals consistent with use.  Most unsettling on the heels of Mason?s conclusion that we had an existing fire hazard was his advice to my wife to begin burning ?big hot fires frequently,? in advance of the company?s return for a second round of work.

A Champion conducted no inspection of our chimney cap or flue from the roof and, to the best of our knowledge, failed to inspect the stucco exterior for chimney-related cracks.  No attempt was made to scrape off a sample of the buildup that supposedly was inside our chimney that had created the ?hazard? or to describe the type of buildup and why it constituted such a serious condition.  Also of significance, no written report of such purportedly significant and dangerous findings was provided to us upon completion of work.

Aside from our receiving poor value for what we paid, we were left with the distinct impression that the ?deal? this company extended was no more than a means to an end; a way to get its foot in the door for the primary purpose of generating additional revenues down the road.  We will soon be contracting with another company for a second opinion and proper inspection and cleaning.  This experience will prevent us from purchasing any ?deals? that involve prepayment in the future.  Buyers beware with this vendor!

    UPDATE: May 13, 2014

Discovery today of this vendor's puzzling November 25, 2013 response to our November 21, 2013 review warrants this update. On November 29, 2013 we did secure a second opinion by contracting with Estates Chimney Sweep, a reputable firm with many years' experience. Estates representatives came to our home and found that our chimney came nowhere near to representing a "worst case" condition or fire hazard. On the contrary, the service personnel from Estates found only light glazing and creosote buildup that was able to cleaned out with the tools brought to the job.  Paul and Jason from Estates Chimney were terrific, did a thorough job and answered all of our questions.  We would use Estates Chimney again and would highly recommend them to others.

A Chimney's response to our initial review is simply untrue.  No reasonable person would refuse to "listen" when service personnel tell you that your chimney represents a fire hazard.  We did listen, intently, to what A Champion employees said, but the drafter of A Chimney's response fails to make an important distinction between "hearing" what someone tells you and "believing" it, and we were neither advised of the availability of any written report or that its issuance would be contingent on our taking some kind of oath to accept its conclusions. I've never heard of such a strange rationale for withholding a written report.

In our opinion, our suspicions that A Champion's personnel misrepresented the truth and the facts were validated with the results of our second opinion, as well as in A Champion's refusal to reduce its findings to writing.  We stand by our initial review.

Mine was one of the easiest jobs he could have. Mine was never done since '93 when I moved in. It was never done. It took him ten minutes to do it. He did his job. He arrived late. I have to call and it's really hard. He was okay. There wasn't anything to what he did. There was no skill on what he did. They were average.

The customer service end was really good.  I did burn a vacation day because they were supposed to arrive at 12:00.  I waited and waited and the showed up at 10 til 4.  They only spent a little time on the roof because it got dark shortly after they arrived.  Most of the visit was spent on a sales pitch.  If I had not kept calling them, they would not have shown up.  They did do their job, and I was satisfied with that.  But I was disappointed with their promptness.  They did tell me that they had transmission trouble, which was the cause for the delay.  I called another chimney sweeping company and they advised that I did not need their "required" services.

The 2 young men that arrived were very courteous and professional. They inspected both the fireplace chimney and the burner chimney. I had no caps on either as they blew away during the hurricane, and they needed to be replaced. I will be calling them in the future for all additional services needed.

I bought the Big Deal for masonry repairs.  They promptly came to the house to perform their initial inspection of the work to be done.  They recommended a chimney liner for one chimney ASAP.  I did feel pressured by the worker, but i have no reason to believe that the work wasn't necessary.  It was a 30 year old chimney with a terracotta liner and likely never had a chimney cap to protect the chimney from the elements.  they showed me some of the chunks of terracotta that were chipping off.  They scheduled the work quickly and got it done quickly.  There was an issue with how they connected the chimney to the heater- the pipe leading out to the chimney wasn't angled correctly and i had to point that out to the worker- I only knew this because it was something that had come up on our house inspection.  If i hadn't known this, the pipe would have been left at the incorrect angle.  We will also be getting masonry work done by them.  I initially thought their quote was too high, but after getting a second estimate from another company that was more than double Champion's estimate, I have obviously changed my mind about that.  I will update the review after the remaining work is completed.
