    Carriage House II

Our kitchen cabinets had become scratched, nicked, worn and sun damaged during the past fourteen years.  The finish was in need of restoration.  Diane chemically cleaned, sanded, restored the color, sealed and lacquered all exterior surfaces. She re-attached all cabinet hardware and thoroughly cleaned the entire kitchen area.

She clearly explained the task, the schedule and our follow-up responsibilities.  She faithfully communicated with us during the entire project and kept a disciplined schedule.

Diane is excellent at her craft and a real pleasure to work with.

Our piano had not been tuned in more than 15 years since it was moved across the country. Bill was punctual, diligent and professional. The task was completed within an hour and the piano is now in tune. We could not have expected a more satisfactory outcome.

The projects above actually represent 3 separate "jobs".  After she completed the 1st job (Woodard set), I was so impressed that my thoughts ran to other projects I'd put off.  And so the table followed, and the chair, and I will shortly get started on a bed restoration she has already seen.   Diane Civiletti loves what she does and so will you because she does it all so well and the more she does for me the more I learn about the breadth of her knowledge and important resources and best solutions pool she has developed over the years.  Moreover she is one of those special people who "show up"...always there, efficient, on-time.  Moreover, because she loves what she does it's is a pleasure to deal with her....always. These problems presented some tricky problems to be dealt with.  For instance, I had previously gotten someone out to evaluate restoring that patio set.  That proposal essentially boiled down to sandblasting the pieces and then applying metal paint.  "Throw out the original seat pads....bring the set to  my shop and I'll do my thing" approach.   Diane recognized the uniqueness of the set, got it sandblasted with a softened blend of sand to reduce damage to the metal, saw the need for minor spot welding, gave the endurance of 3 coats of paint of the correct color & hue, and pointed out the seat pads could and should (because they are original) be restored, etc.  Bottom line is I got exactly what I really wanted for this project but had no real idea of what was needed to get to that ideal.  I learned something in each of these projects.  And those lessons add up to one central lesson....just find the right person.

    American Signature Furniture
AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE DEALS IN MODERN FURNITURE THAT IS MASS PRODUCED IN FACTORIES AROUND THE COUNTRY. THIS CHAIR WAS MANUFACTURED BY MADISON RIDGE LLC, dba  SEMINOLE FURNITURE, INDUSTRIAL PARK RD., P.O. BOX 620, OKOLONA, MS, 38860.  IT RETAILED FOR ABOUT 499.00 BY ITSELF. WHEN YOU COMBINED IT WITH A SOFA THAT ALSO HAD RECLINERS AT EITHER END, THE 2 SOLD TOGETHER AMOUNTED TO 1079.99.  OF COURSE, THEY SOLD US A USELESS FABRIC PROTECTION WARRANTY GOOD FOR 7 YEARS FOR 124.99 ALONG WITH SOME DO IT YOURSELF BOTTLES OF CLEANING SUPPLIES.  THERE WAS LANGUAGE IN CONTRACT THAT SAID SOMEONE WOULD COME TO YOUR HOME AND CLEAN WHAT YOU COULDN'T CLEAN, BUT IT HAD A LOT OF LOOPHOLES, OBVIOUSLY, A BIG WASTE OF MONEY, BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.
FAST FORWARD TO MARCH, 2013.  WE ARE IN OUR NEW LOCATION IN KANSAS.  THE ROCKER RECLINER BROKE.  THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECLINER CAME APART AND THE ARMREST IS NOW ABOUT 6 INCHES FROM THE CENTER CUSHION. OBVIOUSLY, IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY (ONE YEAR).  SINCE I MOVED TO KANSAS, THERE IS NOTHING THAT THE COMPANY CAN DO FOR ME.  I BELIEVE THAT IF I HAD REMAINED IN PA. AND HAD THIS PROBLEM 3 MOS. AFTER THE WARRANTY, THE COMPANY, IN THE INTEREST OF CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REPUTATION EITHER WOULD HAVE FIXED IT FOR FREE OR FOR A SMALL AMOUNT AND CHARGED IT BACK TO THE COMPANY.  WHEN I CALLED THEM TO REPORT THE BREAKDOWN TODAY (APRIL 8TH, 2013), I MORE OR LESS ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION ABOUT WHAT AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE COULD DO FOR ME. THEY DON'T HAVE A PRESENCE IN KANSAS. THEY DON'T LEGALLY HAVE ANY LIABILITY AND EVEN IF THEY DID, IT WOULD BE COST PROHIBITIVE TO SEND THE FURNITURE  TO THEM.
THE PROBLEM IS, AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE TROLLS THE FURNITURE COMPANIES IN THE UNITED STATES LOOKING FOR LOW TO MODERATE PRICED FURNITURE THAT THEY CAN SELL TO A NICHE MARKET. THAT IS, IT'S NOT TRAILER TRASH AND IT'S NOT HIGH END FROM A PRIVATE FURNITURE STORE, OR LAZY BOY, OR ETHAN ALLEN.  THEIR STUFF IS PRICED OUT TO APPEAL TO JOE AVERAGE, SIMILAR TO WHAT THE BIG BOX STORES SELL LIKE J.C. PENNEY, SEARS (NO LONGER SELLS FURNITURE), AND OTHER MAJOR DEPT. STORES.  IT LOOKS GOOD IN THE SHOWROOM, IT PRESENTS WELL, IT FEELS COMFORTABLE WHEN YOU SIT ON IT FOR 35 SECONDS TO TRY IT OUT. THEN THEY HOOK YOU IN WITH COMBO SALES, EASY CREDIT, AND THE USUAL PLOYS.
THIS COMPANY, MENTIONED ABOVE, MAKES FURNITURE THAT, FRANKLY, IS JUNK. THEY MAKE IT WITH CHEAP MATERIALS, AND THIS IS THE RESULT.  THE FABRIC IS WEARING PREMATURELY (WHICH WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN COVERED BY THE STAIN WARRANTY).  THE STEEL INTERIOR MECHANISM  THAT OPERATES THE RECLINER  WAS MADE PROPERLY AND IT APPEARS THAT IT WOULD'VE HELD UP.  THE SPRINGS ARE CHEAP AND THE FURNITURE SAGGED AFTER A LITTLE OVER A  YEAR.   WHERE THEY WENT  EVEN MORE WRONG IS, THEY TRIED TO SAVE A BUCK, (LITERALLY) BY USING A COMBINATION OF 3/4" PLYWOOD & PARTICLE BOARD.  THE AREA THAT FAILED IS WHERE 2 PIECES OF PARTICLE BOARD ARE STAPLED TOGETHER WITH U-SHAPED STAPLES.  MOST DECENT FURNITURE IS MADE WITH 3/4 PLYWOOD THAT IS SCREWED & GLUED. SOME OF THE FRAME WAS DONE IN THIS MANNER. HOWEVER, THIS STRATEGIC PART OF THE FURNITURE WAS NOT. THEY ACTUALLY STAPLED 2 PIECES OF PARTICLE BOARD TOGETHER & PROBABLY EXPECTED IT TO LAST ABOUT A YEAR, WHICH IT DID.  AFTER A YEAR, EVERYBODY CONNECTED WITH THE SALE IS NO LONGER LIABLE AND THE CUSTOMER IS LEFT WITH A USELESS PIECE OF SCRAP.
MY ADVICE TO YOU IS , IT'S OK TO CHECK AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE OUT TO SEE IF SOMETHING INTERESTS YOU, BUT THEN I WOULD TURN THE FURNITURE OVER AND CHECK THE CONSTRUCTION. IF YOU NOTICE ANY PARTICLE BOARD ANYWHERE, FLIP IT OVER AND DON'T LOOK AT IT AGAIN.  I NOTICED IN THE FOLDER THAT HELD THE FABRIC WARRANTY & THE RECEIPT THAT THEY WILL GUARANTEE CERTAIN FURNITURE FOR A "LIFETIME."  THAT FURNITURE IS CALLED THE "AMERICAN SIGNATURE" BRANDED" SERIES.  ADVICE: NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE THAT DOES NOT CARRY THAT NAME--"AMERICAN SIGNATURE BRAND".  THAT WAY YOU PAY MORE, BUT YOU ARE PROTECTED AND YOU WON'T GET BURNED LIKE I DID.
AS WE ALL KNOW, FURNITURE & BEDDING IS A CATEGORY THAT IS A REAL RIPOFF IN AMERICA. IT IS SIMILAR TO A USED CAR OR EVEN A NEW CAR THAT DEPRECIATES 20% WHEN YOU DRIVE IT OFF THE LOT.  THERE IS A HUGE MARKUP IN FURNITURE & BEDDING AND CARS.  IT' BEEN REPORTED THAT THE MARKUP ON FURNITURE IS AS HIGH AS 250%.  SO WHEN THEY CLOSEOUT AN ITEM, THEY ARE STILL MAKING 50% PROFIT. SAD BUT TRUE COMMENTARY ON AMERICAN BUSINESS. IT'S A CLIQUE AND YOU CAN'T GET AROUND IT. YOU EITHER BUY IT OR GO WITHOUT. YOU CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT TO PAY.  IF YOU BUY "CHEAP" FURNITURE, YOU GET CHEAP FURNITURE.  HOWEVER, GOOD WELL MADE FURNITURE IS GROSSLY OVERPRICED.  WHY SOMEBODY DOESN'T OFFER WELL MADE FURNITURE AND SELL IT FOR LESS AND MAKE IT UP ON VOLUME, I CAN'T ANSWER THAT. I WISH I KNEW.  I UNDERSTAND IF YOU BUY DIRECTLY FROM FURNITURE MAKERS, YOU CAN SAVE MONEY, BUT IT'S A LOT OF HASSLE WITH SHIPPING & WARRANTY WORK, ETC.
IF YOU JUST GOT YOUR INCOME TAX REFUND AND YOU CAN ONLY AFFORD 2 GRAND TO FURNISH YOUR LIVING ROOM, YOU WILL END UP AT PLACES LIKE AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE.  THEY FEEL THEY ARE DOING THIS CUSTOMER NICHE A FAVOR BY PROVIDING AFFORDABLE FURNITURE THAT LOOKS GOOD AND WORKS IN THE BEGINNING, BUT IS SUBJECT TO QUICKLY DETERIORATING FABRIC AND , OF COURSE, BREAKDOWNS BECAUSE OF INFERIOR MATERIALS AND/OR WORKMANSHIP.
MAYBE, IN MISSISSIPPI, (WHERE PEOPLE ARE VERY POOR), THEY THINK THIS IS GREAT STUFF, I DON'T KNOW. I GUESS IF YOU ARE SITTING ON WOODEN CRATES, IT IS A BIG IMPROVEMENT TO MOVE UP TO THIS LEVEL OF FURNITURE.  AGAIN, I SAY, BUYER BEWARE, TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THE FURNITURE BY FLIPPING IT OVER AND LOOK AT THE CONSTRUCTION, ESPECIALLY THE WOOD.   YOU WILL THEN KNOW WHETHER IT IS GOING TO LAST. THE FABRIC IS ANOTHER STORY, IT'S HARD TO TELL WHAT GOOD FABRIC IS.  I WOULD COVER THE ARMRESTS PERMANENTLY, THEN IT WILL PROBABLY LAST.
IF EVERYTHING WAS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD, THERE WOULDN'T BE FURNITURE COMPANIES LIKE SEMINOLE FURNITURE TRYING TO HIT A PRICE POINT AND KEEP IT UNDER BUDGET. THEY WOULD HAVE SOME MORALS AND SCRUPLES AND ETHICS AND PUT OUT A QUALITY PRODUCT THAT WOULD REALLY ONLY COST THEM A FEW MORE DOLLARS TO MAKE. IF THEY WOULD HAVE USED REAL WOOD THRUOUT THE ENTIRE CONSTRUCTION, IT WOULD HAVE COST THEM A COUPLE OF DOLLARS MORE.
ALSO, RETAILERS LIKE AMERICAN SIGNATURE FURNITURE SHOULD RAISE THEIR STANDARDS AND NOT BUY THIS FURNITURE. THEY WOULD DEMAND A CERTAIN LEVEL OF QUALITY. EVENTUALLY, THE FURNITURE MAKERS WOULD GET THE MESSAGE AND THEY WOULD STOP THIS UNSCRUPULOUS BUSINESS PRACTICE OF BEING MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE THAN THEY ARE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR FURNITURE.  WELCOME TO AMERICA.

    LEHIGH VALLEY APPLIANCE SERVICE
When appliances were delivered they had to come back because they forgot one that I added. So a second day had to be set aside.  They scratched my wall and my new counter top (which I waited 12 years for).  Trying to tighten the handle on my oven the handle cracked (not their fault)  The delivery men told me they were going to report all this to the owner, and he would be in touch and come out and look at the problems.  After not hearing from anyone for a month I called and no one had reported anything.

My handle had not even been ordered. They ordered the handle and told me it would be there in 2 days. Once again after not hearing for 2 weeks I called. Someone set up a appt. and finally in March everything is done.

The scratch on my counter (which is solid surface) can no longer be seen, just felt, so I am ok with that. The wall I will repair, they did offer to fix it. I tried to use a local company thinking I would have better service. I might as well have gone to Home Depot. You would think as professionals if they thought there would be a chance of scratches they would have covered the counter.

The thing that upsets me the most is the lack of professionalism and communication.  I did not do any screaming and yelling over any of the problems. I could have been a real pain in the a***. But I do think they should have been on the ball.  I am very disappointed as I heard from others it was a good place to deal with.
