Pediatric Care reviews in Haverford

Dr. Kathleen Long is our primary care pediatrician and I prefer to see her when we go in but we've also had experiences with nearly all the other doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners on staff. Some have great bedside manner, others are more rushed, and many of the nurses could take a little more time and soften their approach with kids who are resistant to a test or procedure, although I realize they deal with a high volume of children each day. Dr. Long is very personable and caring - she takes the time to listen, discuss and advise parents on the medical treatment of their children. We've had great referrals to CHOP as needed and are happy with the care we've received at CHOP Care Network Haverford (though I wish they'd kept the name Kids First which was easier to say and more distinctive). The triage nurses do a good job of getting back to you and I've always been able to get a same day sick visit when necessary. It's a bit longer wait for well visits so you should schedule those ahead of time.

They are open minded and caring. They have been great as my daughter's have matured into teenagers. The staff is very friendly and they are very efficient. If there is an emergency they get you in right away. They are very on top of their game.

We have seen all of the physicians and NPs in the practice at this point. The girls' primary physician is Dr. Amy Allen, who always greets us with a smile and takes her time with us. All of the providers, nurses and assistants are always friendly, patient and helpful. The practice is always bustling and at times, we have to wait (which is tough with babies and toddlers). However, the providers never rush through our visits and always take the time to answer my questions. Our visits have included wellness checks / vaccinations, and multiple visits for ear infections. We have had several weekend appointments. We are very happy with Kids First Haverford.

The interaction was fabulous. I love it there. The only downside is that they tend to be closed on the weekend; so if there is an emergency because they are part of Chop, they can connect me directly to someone who can help me. There is always someone who can help me. I have just found all of the staff including doctors there to be wonderful to me, my children, and taking time for us. I always felt comfortable to go in with any of the doctors during an emergency; but there are once that I see specifically with my kids. They do the best to stay on the track. The desk staff is good, but the staff that takes care of the kids is excellent. The billing and administration are very straightforward.

Excellent pediatric practice. I am a pediatrician myself and feel that these doctors offer terrific care with good customer service. I do NOT think their nurses are friendly or accomodating enough on the phone, so gave them a slightly lower grade on staff friendliness, but besides the nurses that answer the phone lines, the practice is top notch! We particularly like Drs. Magargee and Offitt.

We've been seeing Dr. Long as our pediatrician since just after my son was born (6 years ago.) We chose Kids First Haverford based on many factors... one of the most important being that it is a part of the Childrens' Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) network. You are able to get a nurse on the phone (they have a phone bank at CHOP answering Kids First practices' calls) 24 hours a day. I've spoken to a nurse at 3am because my son had a high fever. The practice is professional. Some times it does take a bit to get a nurse to call you back after leaving an initial message with a receptionist. They triage the calls they get, taking the most serious ones first. Yes, I may wait an hour to get a call back when my child has a rash, but if he was turning blue they'd talk to me right away. I've always been able to get my child seen the same day if they are sick. Sometimes there is a wait once we get to the office... I've waited with my kids as long as 45 minutes past our appointment time before we were taken back by the nurse for the pre-seeing-the-Dr interview. When you come to a sick visit, you see whatever Dr is assigned sick visits that day and not your own Dr. I have been impressed by all of the Drs with one exception. Dr. Magargee is a well known local Dr. She is one the board of The Birth Center in Bryn Mawr. She was the original Dr we saw for my son. She did his first, newborn appointment. He was jaundiced. She was concerned and sent us for immediate bloodwork. We worked back and forth for a week to get him the treatment he needed. She was pleasant enough but seemed all the time like she had a train to catch. Always in a hurry, never explaining things that we never would have thought of as new parents. I learned to write down every question I had. I felt like we had to practically hold her arm to keep her in the room long enough to answer our questions. After my son was through the crisis, we switched to Dr. Long (in the same practice) and have never looked back. One downside of such a large and successful practice is how many sick kids are there at any one time. My daughter once caught a 24 hour virus after a visit to Kids First. I guess that is a hazard whatever pediatric practice you go to. Also, the parking lot is far too small and sometimes you cannot find a space. They are a very traditional practice... vaccinations on schedule and such. Very little wiggle room if you want to not vac or delay vac'ing. On the other hand, they are very supportive of breastfeeding.

We've been very pleased with the Kid's First Haverford practice. The toughest thing is sometimes getting through on the phone system. But, they make sure to keep sick appointments open for same day, have a separate sick and well child waiting room and keep pretty much on time for their schedule!

I think that they really try to stay current in technology and customer service. In health care, that's not always a top priority because the patient load is very large. It's a large practice. They use technology very adventitiously. They have also made concessions around their hours to accommodate after-school hours and evening hours.

I've been using Dr. Mattone for six years. She is an exceptional physician. Her ability to diagnose problems is exceptional and she knows when to refer to another specialist. I can't say enough about her. One of the best physicians I've ever met. Extremely good with children and parents alike, truly caring. She was able to diagnose a very subtle but critical problem that other doctors and specialists missed. Kids First is part of the CHOP system. After hours you are connected with nurses at Children's Hospital, who are extremely good. Referrals are to CHOP. Getting through to get an appointment can be problematic. They don't answer the phones at lunch which is annoying since those of us who work have to call on our lunch hour.

I have been quite pleased with the medical care received from Dr. Long as well as the other doctors at the practice. However, some of the office practices can be to work with. Trying to call the office can result in a wait of several hours before they are able to call back, and there have been several times when I have gotten advice from the nurses (over the phone) which was simply incorrect.
