    Harlan Tree Service
Harlan Tree Service was hands down, THE BEST. We had 3 companies give us quotes to remove 1 tree at the time. Harlan was by far the most knowledgeable and less costly. Who says you have to pay more for EXCEPTIONAL work? While they were there, they noticed 2 other trees that could be in jeopardy of falling toward our home that we did not notice were diseased. Clearly they can't predict when they would fall, but we 100% trust their recommendations. They explained why and showed us exactly what they were seeing so we'd understand. Never did we feel they were trying to get more money out of us...not even once. They truly are looking out for the SAFETY of our family, and that's exactly what we were looking for. Safety. They even suggested other trees "to keep an eye on" for the future and identified what to look for so we'd know when to call them again. Warren, Melanie, Angie, and the entire crew are fantastic to work with. The clean up is awesome, not a single branch or piece of sawdust left. They are truly a well-oiled machine and I will absolutely not call anyone else for future jobs. When you see the approximate cost, listen, it's a lot - but not even close to what other companies were estimating FOR ONE TREE. Harlan cut down 5 trees. F-I-V-E. Fantastic, we couldn't be happier!

    Preservation Tree
Mike Leventry came out to give an estimate on several trees/stumps that had been damaged from ice storm, on same day that I called for an estimate. He was very professional and honest about the complexity of removal for the largest and most damaged tree, a 100+ year old Norway Maple that was hanging over our home and very near electrical wires. The estimate was sent to me promptly. They provided proof of insurance and work was scheduled with no problems.
When the crew came out to complete the work, they arrived exactly on time and worked all day. The work area was cleaned up, our property was left in the same shape it was in before they arrived. Work was done exactly to specification.
I would not hesitate to recommend Preservation Tree to anyone, they were extremely professional and did a great job. The estimate for work completed was less than competing quotes that I received and Preservation Tree was far more responsive, easier to work with. Every contact I had with this company, including office staff, was courteous.

They came immediately to survey it but it took a while for them to do the service but I also think that it is because of the storm that hit the area around that time; it was understandable. They were professional, prompt and courteous. There are a lot of different types of companies around but I would definitely consider giving my business to them again. There may be cheaper companies around but their price was good as well. They communicated to me when they were really busy and couldn’t come any earlier but when they said they were going to arrive they arrived on time.

    Top Notch Tree Service
It took a while because of weather; Matt wanted the ground frozen but no snow so that his truck would do minimum damage to the lawn. I do not see any damage at all from his large truck. They arrived as planned at 9 am, and were done about 1 pm. The cleaned things up completely, including blowing the dust off the driveway near where one oft he pines was trimmed. He and his guys were courteous, and trimmed a bit more back where I asked without question or cost.

    Bartlett Tree Experts
They were pretty good about coordinating with our schedules. They sent a representative out to get a feel for what we wanted out of the appointment. They followed up after the job was complete to make sure I was satisfied with the work.

They come by first to assess everything in our yard and they tell you what needs to be done as well as the costs. There are never any surprises and they lay everything out for you to see. I am very satisfied with what they do and they clean up well after themselves. Scheduling goes well and they are always readily available.

I called for an estimate.  They called back 4 days later and left a message.  I called again and got no response.  When they finally set up the estimate, they arrived early (good).  I walked them around the three trees and was quoted $600.  I was told it'd be written up and given to me, and that I could go inside the house.  Thirty minutes later, a folder was on my porch and the man was gone.  The folder contained an estimate and insurance information (good).  The paperwork said to call to schedule.  After a week, I received a call offering to schedule.  I advised I would be able to do it in a few weeks, and was offered a discount if I could do it earlier.  I was quoted $500, and agreed.  I was told I would receive a call to schedule, and all seemed well.  Not hearing from them after a week, I called to schedule, and was rudely told that I could not schedule because I had not returned a signed copy of the original estimate.  After relating the above, and advising that no one had told me of this prerequisite, I was told that I should have received the new estimate, they would send it, and if I agreed to sign it, they would schedule.  Then I was told this was only for 1/2 the job.  The schedule would not agree to me suggesting dates that were convenient to me, but when I stated this was important to me, she reluctantly allowed this.  After selecting a date, I asked about length of time for the job, and was told it should not matter to me.  When I stated that I would like to be home, for the trimming and stump removal, I was told that we had just schedule only 1/2 the job (stump removal).  I would have to speak to another office person to schedule the tree trimming.  When I asked about the cost of removing the stump remnants instead of leaving them, I was quoted more than twice the amount listed in the folder; when advised of this, the officer person did not offer an explanation, so I decided not to undergo this extra expense ($200 quoted to remove the grinding remnants when the folder contents quoted $75 minimum, all for a small pine tree stump that would cost $100 to remove.)  I then asked to schedule the second 1/2 of the job, and was transfered to another person.  After agreeing on a date, she made a point to say that they may not be able to do the job that day and that I should not schedule it unless I was sure I could take the day off work regardless of whether the work was done.  When I suggested choosing another date, I was told that this would not change the fact that they could not promise to do the job on the date.  When I explored the reason, I was told that rain the night before or equipment breakdown could prevent them from doing the job.  When I asked if I'd be notified as soon as they knew the job could not be done, I was told I could be informed only when the office opened at 9 am on the same day, regardless of when the rain or problem occurred.  When I stated that all these conditions and uncertainty left me skeptical, I was told that this was they way it was done.  When I stated that this scheduling disclaimer for 1/2 the job, combined with the estimate snafu and other difficulties, I was feeling a bit uncertain about things, I was told that's the way it's done.  Having a good price quotation, and noting the Angies List and BBB logos in the company's advertisement, I still scheduled the service on the two days for the two 1/2.  I then received the second estimate.  Two hours later, I received a call from the second scheduler stating that the owner chose to cancel the job because he did not like the fact that I was asking questions about scheduling.  At this point I was happy to cancel. Then, two days later, I received an email asking me when I would like to perform the service on my trees.  When I responded asking for clarification because the job had been cancelled, I received no response at all.

    Boswell's Tree Service
Rob was one of 3 companies that I had come out to give an estimate for the tree work at our new house.  He provided me with a very fair quote and let me know that he would take care of a small stump that I had wanted to take out at no extra cost since they would already have their equipment out there.  I was very pleased with his punctuality for the estimate as well as his professionalism.  He understands how to run his business and did a good job explaining how the process would work and what I should expect.  One thing that really sold me is that Rob told me he would be on the job himself, not just have one of his crews there doing work.  Call me nostalgic, but I really like knowing that the owner of the company will be out there doing the work insuring the work is done properly.  Rob arrived a few minutes early on the day that we had agreed the work would be started on.  He did a walk through with me to make sure that we were both on the same page with what work was going to be done.  After we did a quick walk through he and his team got right to work.  By the time I got home from work that night a majority of the work was done.  Once again, they arrived a few minutes early the following day and completed the job.  Rob gave me a call to let me know they had finished and I went out to meet and pay him.  Once I arrived we did a walk through and he explained the work that he had done and made sure that it was completed to my satisfaction.  I was very happy with the work preformed and made sure to get a few extra business cards so that I could recommend him to anyone I knew looking to have tree work done.

    O'Briens Tree Service
We wanted to have a large Locust tree removed from our backyard. Andy O'Brien himself came to give us the (verbal) estimate. He seemed like a nice guy. I had read the other couple of reviews on Angie's List that said he wasn't very punctual and can concur with that statement. He said he would be over in about an hour to give me the estimate and he showed up about 2hrs later. Luckily I work from home so that wasn't too big of a deal.We decided to go with O'Briens because they gave us a call on Thursday night and said they would be in our neighborhood on Friday and asked if we had made a decision on whether or not to take down the tree. So my husband and decided to have them remove the tree and Andy said they'd be at our house and quot;...first thing in the morningand quot;. I had to press him for details of what exactly and quot;first thing in the morningand quot; meant- was it 7am? 8am? Later? He said probably closer to 8am. Well, 8am on Friday came and went and my husband was ready to call him and cancel but we decided to give him until 9:30am to show up. He and his guys showed up at our house at 9:23am. They pulled their chipper and crane truck into our backyard- this surprised my husband (who came home to watch the process) who wasn't expecting such large trucks in our backyard. I assumed they would bring the trucks to the backyard- learning #1- always ask about everything, don't assume anything. When they began trimming the high branches, they just let them drop into our yard- creating LARGE (sometimes deep) holes. Learning #2 (similar to #1)- ask if the company is going to use ropes for all branches or just the large ones. My husband thought they would use ropes to lower all the branches instead of just dropping them. This was my 1st experience with removing a tree so I had no expectations or assumptions. They actually dropped some pretty large branches and after the tree was removed our yard looked like it had been mortared- holes everywhere!
They actually punctured our siding when they were using ropes to lower 1 of the branches that was very close to the house. From inside I heard a very loud noise and went outside to investigate. The guy from the crane bucket got down and said that the branch got away from him and that they'd fix it. He was just going to send 1 of his guys to Home Depot to get some replacement siding. When my husband called to check on progress (he had to go back to work), I told him what had happened and he called Andy (who had left our house by this time) to see how he was going to fix this. In the end, Andy called in a siding guy to fix the siding later that afternoon and everything seems to be OK. However, it was a very stressful day with how events were taking place (dropping large branches in the yard, branches scraping the roof, branch puncturing our siding, etc).
Learning #3- not all tree service companies remove the pile of mulch created when the tree stump is ground. O'Brien's Tree Service is 1 of those companies. Therefore, we were left with a very large pile of sawdust (approx. 5'long by 3' wide and 3' tall) to get rid of.
After the tree was removed and all the guys were gone, we discovered that they must have spilled some gasoline in our yard because we have a large dead patch of grass now. They left the main trunk of the tree in our yard to come back and get later. And when they came back to get it with the Bobcat, they put 3 more holes/indentations in our yard when they dropped the trunk maneuvering it around to get it out of the backyard.
Overall, we weren't very happy or satisfied with the work completed by O'Brien's Tree Service and would not recommend them to anyone else.

Excellent. They arrived at about 9 AM and finished everything but the stumps before noon. They cleared away most of the debris (some small twigs and branches still left on the lawn). In the afternoon, a separate crew came out to grind the stumps.
