    Gilbert Tile
Bill Gilbert arrived for estimate two days after initial contact. House was built in 1956. Original owner installed 4" plastic tile in entire bathroom, including around tub/shower. Bill was the only remodeler I contacted who thought it possible to replace only the area around the tub/shower. His estimate was $3,000 less than closest.. One contractor wanted to gut entire bathroom at $12,000 +. Others wanted to do the tub surround system. Bill and Bob arrived on time and started to remove existing tile and plaster. After five minutes, it became apparent that the side wall was soaked through to the studs because original tile had not been sealed and no moisture barrier installed. Apprentice previous owners only took baths. Side wall plaster and studs were soaked up to a height of about 6 feet, and some moisture damage had started on back of bedroom wall, adjacent. After some consultation, we decided it was best to take out a small section of the bedroom wall and install extra studs beside the ones that had been water damaged. This added about 3 hours to the project total time estimate. Bill and Bob were fast, efficient and, I might add, great to work with. Funny guys. Project lasted 2 1/2 days. They tore out existing tile and walls, cut out a 3 x 5 section at the base of the bedroom wall, added insulation to the exterior bathroom wall, then installed cement board, including in the section of bedroom wall removed. Installed and ducted ceiling fan, which required working in the the tight. hot attic in 90-degree temps. Installed ceramic tile in tub/shower area. Installed new scald-proof faucet, shower head and faucet. Taped and sanded bedroom wall replacement section, making it paint-ready with no additional prep work required by me. Cleaned thoroughly. hauled away old materials. I would not hesitate to fire Bill again for any further kitchen/bathroom remodeling.

    Pittsburgh Painting and Drywall
It went well.  The owner John Scumaci responded quickly to all our calls and was able to come out and give us a free estimate the day after we contacted him.  We agreed to the price and John and his worker came the next day.  It was a two day project and they called each time before coming and they were punctual each time.  The wall came out really well and he cleaned up when he was done.  We would definitely call him again if the need arises.

    Higgins Painting
Great response time for estimate, prompt start and completion of job, cleaned up well, but most importantly, a BEAUTIFUL job on both the plastering and the painting. Price was right on, and completely reasonable for the job we needed. We would hire these guys again in a nanosecond!!!

For $500, repair work for a small water leak that damaged a corner of a bedroom ceiling was to be repaired using plaster as the entire house has plaster. This is the main reason why I originally had Denk Plastering do the work as he advertises plaster is his specialty.  Also while there, stress cracks were to be corrected with plaster as well as to blend into the rest of the textured surface. This was stressed as I intended to paint and I did not want to address these issues again for a long time. There was no ambiguity on my part as to what I wanted to achieve and what he had to offer.

Much to my surprise, all work was completed in just under 2 hours. I was originally told it would be the better part of a half a day which to me sounded reasonable with two men working. Mr. Denk, the owner, told me it would be ready to paint over in 2-3 days. Once dried, I discovered many of the cracks that were fixed were still visible as well as cracks never touched. Concerned, I called Mr. Denk and asked if he would stop over to address the issues as I was not happy with the quality. After all, his advertising says his work is guaranteed. This would have included the general sloppiness left behind as well, which to was to me, a minor issue in comparison to getting the job done properly. He did return my phone call and acted surprised but did say he stood behind his work. He also said he would come out but put me off twice as to scheduling a mutually acceptable time to meet. He never called  again like he said he was going to. He seemed to not want to go too out of his way after all he had already been paid in full for the quick job. It also became apparent he was hoping I would just go away out of frustration which is exactly what happened. (One more interesting point, when making out the check for payment, he had me fill it out in his personal name, not the company's name on his truck and business cards.) Very shady!  One could assume that this job would not be claimed on paper and that the $500 was quick cash to make before 10 a.m. in the morning....

After two attempts on my part and none on his, I called another company in to clean up and finish the job the right way. I was shown that indeed a hard compound was used on the water leak area but every where else joint compound was haphazardly smeared over some cracks. It was not textured into the walls to blend in and chunks were left here and there including all over a ladder I let them use as well as the kitchen sink. The second company also told me that new plaster has a curing time before painting, far exceeding 3 days. Mr. Denk never mentioned this. Very sloppily done but given the time put into the job, not surprising. Heck, I could have done as well or better with a $5 bucket of joint compound....

Check cashed. Mr. Denk and his plastering company has fallen off the face of the Earth. Very disappointed with how this was handled. Obviously will never use again and would warn others to steer clear.  Find a more reputable, reliable, quality oriented company.

    Hindes & McGinnis Contracting

Working with Hindes and McGinnis is always easy.

When I contacted Charlie (McGinnins) and asked if they did that kind of thing, he said yes.  We sent him some pictures and he came out to give an estimate about a week later.

While the original start date of Dec 2 couldn't be done because our tile order did not come in, we rescheduled for Feb 9th.

They showed up on Monday Feb. 9th and began putting concreted board framing on the bricks of the living room fireplace.  By Wednesday they were able to paint the entire room in one day.  The tile guy started on Thursday and was finished by the following Tuesday.  They followed our instructions about how to lock up when they left each day and the tile guy even worked a little on Valentines day to get the job done sooner.

It looks great and we are completely satisfied.  They really did a nice job!

I have used Hindes and McGinnis for about 4 jobs now and each time they do a wonderful job for a great price.

    The Handy Craftsman
Dealing with them and getting our quote was very easy.  The employees were all very polite and I was comfortable having them in my home.  We had an issue with demolition dust and they were quick to fix the situation.  The finished product is wonderful and I would recommend them to anyone!!
we also had them fix some sliding closet doors.

    Hindes & McGinnis Contracting
Charlie was very prompt for the appointment and provided an estimate on the spot. He was very informative and professional. I agreed to have them do the work. Chuck came out at the agreed-upon time. He was even a little early, which was great. He immediately put down floor protection and went to work. I thought this was a very professional move. Upon removing of the window, it was discovered that there was a very minor siding issue, which they corrected at no charge! He reframed and installed the window. It looks great, and my wife is very excited also. Great experience! I will definitely use them again, and strongly recommend them!!!

    Faust Enterprises Inc
I never received an estimate or a brief explanation of why Faust Enterprises was not interested in the job. I am still looking for contractors who will be able to install a fire-wall in a tandem garage located in basement area of home.

    Saw Contracting
Work was done on duplex I purchased that needed remodeled to get into good rental condition. Original time frame for work was not met, work was done 4-6 weeks after goal time frame. Outside factors contributed to delays and not just the contractor. Original bid was just for labor only, asked for bid including materials. Contractor estimated materials and ended up being off by $3k-$4k. Not a huge issue. Noticed different workers there and appeared as if employee turnover and stability was a problem. Owner Scott, was very nice and easy to communicate with. I liked working with him. Would have preferred to pay funds to business and not to owner's personal name which he requested. Agreed to do so. Contractor was adamant about draws and could not float work or labor for more than a week or two. Quality of finishing work was satisfactory initially. In the 1-2 months following the rehab, I had to have another contractor correct many items. Following the main job, the items that needed corrected were, not properly sealed glass block windows, wrong type of grout used in kitchen floors, dishwasher not installed and sealed correctly, minor electric issues, new toilet installed leaked and caused damage to ceiling below, wooden deck was not correctly secured and/or repaired. A few blemishes in finishing work needed corrected. I had a single contractor who could handle those items himself and preferred to use him rather than having the contractor come back. I needed a contracting company with multiple employees to do the project though and selected SAW Contracting after getting quotes and talking to 2 other companies. Scott beat both in price, was based locally, and made a good first impression so he was hired. I feel he probably underbid and the additional fees paid to correct some of the work and the overages on materials, still were roughly even with higher bids I received. I asked for rental quality work, so I can not accurately recommend him for good residential quality. OVerall I'd consider using Scott again, but would have a more detailed contact and agreement with him, with time restrictions, detailed material and labor figures included. I've done multiple rehab and residential projects and it is not easy to find a good contractor at a good price who works quickly on bigger projects. I've used others and had similar experiences. As long as the right expectations are there, Scott could be a good fit in the right project.

    Hindes & McGinnis Contracting
Our call was returned immediately and they came to give an estimate that same day. Several days later they came to begin the work of replacing the tape on the ceilings, adding additional drywall screws and skim coating and sanding the ceilings. They covered the floors with cloths and protected the carpets and walls as they were working. They cleaned up as they went. The work was done in a timely fashion with very little disruption to our household. While this is a very dirty job, there was very little for me to personally clean up when the job was completed.
