    We had our chimney lined in 1992.  We have burned wood in it every winter since then.  It was fine for 23 years.  This past winter we had an amazing chimney fire. No damage to the interior of our home.  The fire department put it out.  
    Zach from Black Knight came out and determined that the lining had failed.  Zach is very knowledgeable on all the pros and cons and gave us all the information so we could make a decision.   If we wanted to burn wood again that would require tearing down the chimney and rebuilding the entire thing. Uh, no.  If he relined it then we could have gas logs.  Yes!  Our decision was not based on price.  The insurance company was paying and willing to return it to a wood burning fireplace (much more expensive). We chose gas logs because we found a set big enough for the large fireplace, they could be used with our new/existing glass doors, and we were tired of carrying firewood in all winter. 
    Zach completed the work in a week. We waited all summer to do the work because of our schedule - not his.  He came after we went to work and was gone by the time we returned each day.  There was barely a sign he had been there.  They were very clean and neat.  The cost included the gas logs and installation.  We now have a beautiful fireplace again. 
    We have two other chimney's and we continue to use Black Knight to maintain them.  We highly recommend them!

    I needed some repairs done to a chimney. I believed it needed to be repointed or repaired from bottom up. I called several times and left messages before hearing back. Once I did hear back the secretary suggested I speak with Zach (worker). It took another few calls and messages before reaching each other. NOTE: I have a profession that I cannot be reached while I am working. It was very difficult to reach Black Knight after 3 or 4pm.

    I explained what I was looking for and that I needed an estimate. Zach had several questions about the condition and the function of the chimney. After this conversation it was suggested that the secretary would call back to schedule an appointment. Again this took days without any call and then a few more days of phone tag. Once the secretary was reached she stated that Zach had a few more questions prior to coming out. Again days went by without a call so phone tag began again. Finally we resorted to email to reach each other. A day was set to meet for the estimate and that was cancelled day of.

    Finally, I spoke to the secretary and gave them a window of time that myself or wife would be home. She could not confirm due to the weather but said if they were going to come would call night before. I left for work one morning and received an email from my wife stating they called and were on their way (within hours). They showed up and spoke to my wife and took some pictures. Said an estimate would be put together and sent to us. AGAIN days go by and days turned into a week. Finally emailed the business again and received pictures of my OWN chimney but no estimate. Again, Zach needed to talk to me prior to the estimate. Our Luck Zach was out of town on business.


    Finally I get to speak to Zach and discuss my concerns and what I believe the problem to be. He gave his "expert" opinion which I respected and suggested a try a few more cheap solutions before taking on an expensive repair. The professional and honest person Zach could have given me an estimate and done repairs that might not have been 100% necessary and collected the funds off of me. BUT, he instead gave me a possible solution. Although I had mixed feelings about their professionalism at the beginning and their difficulty to reach or return a phone call I was impressed by the end result. I would use Black Knight in the future. Thanks!!!

    I first have to say that I would have given higher scores if the team would have finished the job. The team was nice and seemed to be knowledgeable. They finished the chimney and it looked very good. Based on that I would have given them an A for their quality. However, I regret having them do further work because things went steadily downhill from there. The small walkway seemed to be overpriced at $1000 but since they were here doing other work that would include raising our slightly sunken front walkway, I decided to move forward with it. The small walkway looked ok but the team said it would darken up after drying. A rain storm the same day seemed to make a stain on the walkway. We weren't happy but hoped that it might be less noticeable after the supposed darkening that would happen after curing was complete. After this winter (2013 - 2014) we noticed that all the brush strokes in the cement had crumbled off. That is with only a handful of shovelings down to the concrete surface. The team said they would come back the next day to remove the framing and pins and replace the dirt and mulch around the new walkway. They were also unable to raise the end of the slumping front walkway. They said their jacks just sunk into the dirt because the walkway was too heavy. I told the team that I wanted to talk about other options with the owner since this was part of the price quoted. That was the last I heard from anyone from the company. After about a week I tried calling the company back to ask when they would come finish the walkway framing removal and some missed brick pointing on the side of the house. I got a message saying the phone number was out of service. I tried calling several times thinking I dialed the wrong number but after looking an the business card and online I was certain that I was calling the correct number. I tried again weeks later but got the same message.I ended up taking the framing out myself and replacing the dirt and mulch around the walkway. The front walkway is still slanting and the extra brick pointing is still unfinished. To satisfy my curiosity, I called the business sometime in 2013 and I got the original answering machine that I got when I first called the company. I called from a different phone this time so either they blocked my home number or their business phone number came back on line after months of being out of service. Either option is poor business practices in my opinion. Just to be clear, I called their number only twice before they decided not to come back. Once to setup an estimate and once to confirm that we wanted to proceed with the work.

    We used The Handy Dan Ragaller about five months ago.  He was on time, he did the work.  He did a good job and we were satisfied.  I think it was $400 for the ceiling and chimney.  It was two chimneys actually.  I questioned his price at first but I'll stick with an A for him.  He seemed to do the job, we had some leakage in the ceiling and that stopped.  He did a good job.

    Called the office and requested someone come to our home to give us options on a woodburning fireplace.  We recently bought a home with a gas fireplace and wanted to convert to wood burning with a blower.  A man showed up from the company and I explained to him we wanted to be able to burn wood and asked our options.  He gave me a presentation that our fireplace was a junk gas insert used in new construction homes.  Told us that we were probably looking close to 10,000 once everything was said and done.  We were charged $100 as a measuring fee and were told that we would receive a full estimate from the office.  We never received anything from them.  Not ever a follow up! 
    We thought the price was steep so we called another fireplace company.  Someone came out, told us that our fireplace was a wood burner and basically it cost us $85 to have it converted to a wood burner and an extra $100 for a blower.
    Hearth & Home was trying to take us for ride!!!

    Don was the only company of 5 that I attempted to reach who even returned my phone call. He was able to come out within 3 days. He called ahead to say they were running behind and would be late, which was no problem. He and his helpers were absolutely professional, polite and did a terrific job. There was no mess left behind a all. Don took the time to thoroughly explain what he found in terms of needed repairs (all of which he said could wait until next spring), and also took his time showing me the details of the fireplace, how and where everything was vented, and how to safely use the fireplace (sounds silly perhaps, but I'm a newbie at this). He took pictures of what he found on the roof and was able to show me the repairs he recommended having next year and why. I haven't had old-fashioned customer service like this from a contractor in a long time. I would most definitely recommend D & G to anyone.
