    Vistarr Laser and Vision Ctr
Dr. Bigler is a very concerned and caring eye professional. Discussed the progress of my cataract, he didn't try to rush me into surgery even though the condition continues to worsen. I am very confident going to him.

Be prepared for a VERY long wait if you go here. You are much better off getting an appointment with one of their doctors in a suburban location (i.e. Penn Medicine at Radnor) if available. So, this is the process. When you first arrive, you check in at the desk at the door. They take your name, and then you wait for 15-30 minutes for another person to call your name to get your insurance information and check you in again. Then after about 1-2 hours, you get called to see the technician who checks your vision. You get sent back to the waiting from where you will sit for another 1-2 hours to see the doctor. After you are done with the doctor, you have to wait another 15-30 minutes to get checked out. I do not necessarily think that this is the fault of the doctors. However, I think the people behind the desks in the waiting area can do a better job of making the wait more pleasant. They can start by setting appropriate expectations and not telling the waiting patients that they will be seen "soon" when "soon" really means hours. Also, when I asked if I could run out to get lunch after it became obvious that my wait was going to be another hour, I was told that I would be placed at the end of the queue if I left the waiting area. I was starving, so I ended up having to sneak out to grab a bite from a food cart outside. It would have been a lot nicer to be permitted to leave the premises. Overall, I felt that the way the whole visit was handled made this experience very negative. The doctor that I saw was pleasant. However when I was told that I needed to return for a follow-up visit, the thought of taking another 4+ hours out of my day did not sit well with me at all. I ended up calling the Radnor office and begged them to allow me to do my follow-up visit there with a different doctor. I did have to passionately plead my case, but I did prevail. It was worth it. The whole process at Radnor took about 45 minutes.

    Correa-Meyer, Dr. Paulo
I have been seeing this physician for more than 25 years, and being very familiar with ophthalmic medical practices, I am impressed with the thourough exam. Dr. Correa-Meyer does not accept insurance so patients pay him and then submit the claim to their insurance company. That may disappoint some, but the practice is full of patients willing to spend a little more for superior eye care. Dr. Correa-Meyer no longer performs surgery, but when the time comes, I am certain he will be a valuable referral source.

    Vistarr Laser and Vision Ctr
I picked Vistarr because they were covered by my vision plan (VSP) and were in the area. It sounds like the Paoli office is a satellite office that is not open all the time, but I had no trouble scheduling an appointment to get my eyes checked or when it came time to pick up my glasses (although I did call first to check that they were open.) The location is pretty good; it's just off Paoli Pike after taking a left at the Ford dealership. They're in the nice-looking two-story building after the low rise. There seemed to be ample parking available in back.
Check-in was fine; I only had to wait a minute or two while the receptionist helped the person before me. And I was able to peruse frames even for that short wait. Paperwork was the usual. Dr. Millhimes was very pleasant and started from my existing prescription reverse-engineered from my existing glasses. The eye exam did not involve that machine that blows a puff of air in your eye.
For purchasing the glasses, the saleswoman was helpful and efficient. The selection of men's frames was pretty good. Previously, I've gotten glasses from two different ForEyes locations, LensCrafters, and some random mall chain. I would say Vistarr had slightly less selection in terms of sheer numbers of frames. This wasn't a big deal for me since all the stylistic bases seemed to be covered.
I've never been a big price comparison shopper for glasses frames. I got a pair of Altair light metal frames and Joseph Abboud thick plastic colored frames. Price-wise, I don't know which pair is which, but for high-astigmatism anti-glare lightweight lenses (no bifocals, no tinting, no light-reactive tinting), one pair was listed at 465 lens and 149 frame, the other at 365 lens, 189 frame. However, my plan covered one pair of glasses and the second pair ended up being 25% off plus some kind of credit factored in.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly how long the glasses took to get in after ordering them because I was out-of-country without phone service starting the day after ordering the glasses.
Overall I was quite happy with the experience. It was easy and convenient. I have never really comparison-shopped on price for glasses/frames because of laziness, so I can't speak to how competitive the prices are. (I ruled out Costco's optometrist because I would have had to submit the insurance paperwork myself.) I expect that I'll go to Vistarr again next time I need an eye exam or glasses, but I will take better advantage of my plan coverage and only get one pair of glasses per 2 year interval.
