Once Emmanuel and I connected (I had sent two unanswered emails) he was prompt and expedient in getting a proposal together. I had 3 contractors look at the job and I chose Emmanuel because he not only took every job but began the next job based on who paid the down payment rather than the size of the job. I was out of town each time he came to work so cannot speak to his promptness when on site but can attest to his cleanliness and quality of work. If there was any criticism or issue it would be that I expect constant open communication during any project with any changes. I expected people to be on site to finish the job one day but my daughter said no one had shown and I didn't get a text to let me know otherwise. Was then told by Emmanuel that he was coming to finish the job but he didn't show nor text again with a reason for a few days. Eventually he returned my texts to explain. A text at the beginning, even from one of his workers or his wife would have relieved my frustration or assumptions of why the project wasn't finished when expected. The other issue was that I stated several times that the grass seed used needed to be matched to what I already have planted. It isn't matched well. Emmanuel said he would do his best but it is two shades different and noticeable. Overall, the project was a success and the most important aspect of the job is that the drain is working!! I am extremely happy that I am no longer having to vacuum my lawn with a shop vac to protect my lawn from road debris of stones, silt, and sludge anymore.

Bill and his crew did an excellent job.  We had to have three unwieldy and large shrubs removed, and this was well done.  We had some new plantings installed and all of the property's existing beds were re-shaped and edged, then mulched after some plantings were added.  Bill also brought in some rocks and boulders to add further interest.  Overall, the work was extremely well done.  The crew was polite, hard-working and professional.  They were very tidy, too.
The mulching was all done by hand, and I am sure it was tedious because of the size of the beds.  Yet, all was accomplished in a very satisfactory manner.
We will be working with Bill in coming years to complete Phases II and III of our project, which will see more plantings added, but this was an excellent start.  We no longer need to feel embarrassed by our landscape!
I would also add that Bill was very patient with me and my tendencies to "micro-manage" projects.  He told me that he treats all his jobs as if they were being done at his own house, and I certainly believe him.  He was very considerate and aimed to deliver on all we asked.  I also thought that the price was very fair, considering other estimates we got from other landscapers who lacked the vision that Bill had.

When we bought our house in June, I received a postcard from Steel City Landscape promoting their services.

Now that I am in a place to begin a dialogue with a landscaper about plans for multi-year work beginning next spring, I wanted to meet with some landscapers and see who was a good fit.  I called Steel City and did get a return call from Mark.  We played a good bit of phone tag, and I will give him credit for trying.

However, I was really upset when the last message I got from Mark said that we live "too far out for them to work with us."  We live eight miles from the home base!  And if we were so far out, why target us with a postcard mailing.

I get the sense that Mark just didn't want to be bothered in trying to connect, and I find that extremely unprofessional.  I admire responsive, dedicated people.  I suppose Mark's business is so good that he does not need a long-term contract with a solid client.  Good for him, but I don't feel good about my experience and would caution others to give serious thought to using this company.

Showed up on time and had an exceptional crew. Professionalism from start to finish! Once the BIG JOBS were done, they cleaned up the yard, with MINIMAL damage to plants and flower beds. We would HIGHLY recommend this company!

After having some fencing installed the yard needed work. We purchased the big deal to have the surface filled in, evened and seeded. We also asked for a brick border to put placed at ground level to facilitate mowing. It took several calls to explain what we were expecting and the project did not go as smoothly as we would have liked. Tuma was responsive to all our calls and worked with us to finish the project. We both made some compromises to get the job finished. I would have liked a smoother interaction, but feel they did a decent job to try to make things right. The work they did was good. They were prompt and speedy. I would use them again, but only with a clear and detailed communication of the job.

I initially got an estimate in April.  I knew that the ideal time to put in a new lawn with seed was in late August or early September.  I contacted them again on September 17 through Angie's List.  I got an auto response that they would contact me within 48 hours.  Since I knew I was late and the situation was time sensitive, on September 20 I sent another message since I had not heard from anyone.  At that point I called and spoke with the owner, Randy Tuma.  He told me that my project manager was out of town and would get back to me.  Over the next ten days I played telephone tag with the project manager.  He finally met with me on October 3 and the project was done on October 7.
The job was done very well.  I am most pleased.
However, the service of the project manager has continued to be subpar.  Neither he nor the workers gave me instructions about how to care for the sod.  I had to call the project manager to get instructions about watering and mowing.  At that time he promised to send me proposals for ongoing care.  It has been over three weeks with no response.

Hall's was prompt, polite, and thorough.  They asked what needed done and did the job just as I described what I wanted done.  They chopped down a large patch of overgrown sumac and jagger bushes.  They mowed my lawn and my daughter's lawn.  The trimmed my daughter's boundary hedges, and they removed tons of brush created while they worked.

Not well at all.... seeing as how what they did above is not what I asked them to do when I scheduled the services.

When Randy and I spoke for the first time, he had a small window of opportunity in order to do the work for me.  I had purchases a Big Deal from Angie's List that gave me 12 man-hours of garden/landscaping work.   I purchased this deal because I have a very problematic area in the front of my house: a steep incline down to a lower yard that due to walking in it does not get attention and has gone to weeds.  I wanted this problem solved.

Randy told me that he was only available to do the work one of the next two days, then his availability became almost non-existent due to regular clients.....  I was a bit annoyed at this since I'd purchased the deal with a window of six weeks detailed in the ad description, but OK, I could make the day after next work.

We talked at some length about the fact that I wanted this steep area cleared completely: pull out all the ferns and weeds and then replace those plants with Pachysandra from an acre of it in the woodlot adjoining our property.   We went into such detail that I went outside and taking a number of photos of the hillside, sent them to Randy via email so he would know exactly what they would be working on.  I figured he would be sending two men for six hours and wasn't sure if that would be enough, so told him to have the guys start in the middle and work towards the sides, figuring that my husband and I might be able to finish later.

My husband was home the day they came, but working in his office.  He had no knowledge of any of the specific plans for the work, only that guys from Randy's Lawn Service would be coming to do some work.

When I got home that evening I was very upset to see that nothing had been done to the steep hillside except raking.... the area had not been cleared of weeds and then replanted with the Pachysandra groundcover as Randy and I had discussed.  All of my gardens had been raked and cleaned of garden debris and, when the men finished early, as they would have since there wasn't enough of that kind of work to do at my place unless you'd done the work I asked for, they asked my husband what else he'd like done so he had them pull out a couple of bushes.

Let me be clear:  the men who came (Randy was not among them) worked hard and did a very good job of the work they did.  They just didn't do the work I paid for.

When I called Randy and left a message about this, I received no return call.

When we scheduled an appointment for an estimate the company did
not show or call to cancel. They showed up the next day out of nowhere
and said we would have an estimate the next day but we never heard from
them. Very disappointed, we really wanted to give our business to a
    local company.

we would definitely look to use this company again. They were friendly, courteous, & hardworking. We vetted their insurance and it turned out to be top notch which was good since the  trees were close to the house
