  • Fire in garage on March 1st, 2014. They responded the very day of the fire and got a subcontractor out to put plywood up where door had burned and secure the site. Said they would get construction project manger to call me and set appointment to evaluate the damage. Told me to go ahead and get the insurance adjuster out to assess the damage. After a missed or late appointment, finally got with project manger to evaluate all that the adjuster and I had discussed. He agreed they could do that work, and immediately let me know that he was only the construction and I would still need to get cleanup project manager to arrange the ozone and cleanup. That took several more days. The construction project manager sent the actual construction manager (now three managers to deal with). He set time to bring the subcontractor supervisor to look at the damages. This is where he thought they could repair some things that insurance said needed replacing. The patch job is not satisfactory, but after making his attempts to repair and using all the money the adjuster had provided for replacement, he said he will need lots more money to do the replacement. It was not my fault he tried to repair the door, but he said he will still need more money. The actual repair work inside the garage was satisfactory, but the delays, dishonesty and charging for things not done make me not ever trust Blackmon-Mooring for restoration work again.

    Now for the cleanup. The ozone and the carpet cleaning and tile cleaning was very acceptable. The ozone treatment did not get rid of the smoke smell entirely inside the bedroom nearest the fire, but they did another 12 hour treatment and it is ok. The cleanup of the garage was a big disappointment. We had several storage shelves with storage crates and cardboard boxes on them. They were covered with soot and some were water stained. The cleanup manager missed several appointments and was difficult to reach many times. He sent three staff to clean the garage, and they did wipe most of the boxes off, but did not move any boxes out of the garage and clean under the shelves or along the walls or the floor. It was covered in black soot, water, mud, and very dirty. They left after cleaning the boxes. I reached the manager and told him this was not satisfactory. I reminded him the we had discussed how we could get those boxes cleaned and the shelves and floors cleaned on his first visit. I reminded him that the adjuster had figured in the cost of cleaning all items, floors, and even the attic stairs where firemen tracked as they entered the attic to insure no fire damage up there. They were supposed to haul away all debris left form the fire and the construction crew. The cleanup manager sent two ladies and they brought a mop and a bucket and wiped at the floor on the side were we park the cars and did nothing on the side where the shelves and boxes were (the third car area). We ended up renting a floor scrubber and cleaned the garage ourselves. The cleanup guy wanted all the money the insurance adjuster allowed, but did not do all the work. I gave up and paid the bill.

    The construction manager refused to give me an itemized statement. He added up all the adjuster estimates and charged the full amount, acknowledging that he not do the electrical repairs (I wanted my own electrician to do that). He did not replace the front door. He did not seal most of the things spelled out in the adjuster estimate, and he did not repaint many of the areas the estimate called for. When I challenged him on this, he just kept insisting that he did everything his manager listed. With the shell game of guessing who I needed to talk to, I finally gave up and just surrendered all the money the insurance adjuster provided. I still do not see how a reputable company can just give me an invoice for the total due without providing an itemized statement. This is dishonesty at best and total larceny at worst. I will never use or recommend this company again.

  • Everything went exceptionally well from the day I called to schedule an appointment for an estimate to the day the work was performed. The gentlemen who did the estimate was professional and did an excellent job explaining what would be needed to fix my flooring problem. Armando who came out and performed the work was very professional and skilled and did a fantastic job fixing the subfloor and installing the new floor. I am very pleased with the work that was done and my whole experience with Handyman Matters. I will definitely use them again with future projects.
