    A & E Masonry .
Frank spoke with me before the job was done.  We went through the types of brick we could use and the design. We chose the Belden Brick for durability and preferred colors.
I am very happy to have an intelligent man to explain the process and reasoning behind many of the possible choices.

    MITCHELL'S MASONRY
I hired him to match the bricks and do some patchwork; using the same size and type of brick.  After he did the job, I noticed something looked off.  After having a family gathering I had a family member notice that the bricks were slightly smaller than the ones initially installed.  He put in very thick mortar joints.  The mortar is very white, which it appears he didn't attempt at all to make the mortar the same color.  I have stark white, and the original mortar.  He could have went down 4 tiers of bricks to make this all match.  I'm left with one level having multiple mortar textures and colors.  The work was sloppy.  I attempted to contact him to get this resolved around December of 2010, and he didn't want to help fix it.

    A Chim Chimney Masonry
The first day they started, two men got in about 5 hours before it began to rain. They came back a few days later to finish grinding the joints and remove the spalled brick and weathered flue. I think the whole job took 4 partial days. They usually bagan work around 10:00/11:00 AM and left before 5PM. The last day the boss showed up after the crew and made sure everything was accomplished as requested. I had placed an inner tube into the flue to prevent debrie from falling down the chimney when they replaced the old flue which they used as I requested until the flue was out. They had a problem getting the new flue in place as it was slightly wider than the old one. This required much grinding inside the chimney and hammering the flue into place. Inside the house I could hear debrie falling down the inside of the chimney, exactly what I was trying to prevent. The basement floor where the other fireplace is was coated with cement dust. The flue damper in the cellar fireplace may have been in the open position. I wish they had told me to check that it was closed before starting the job. There is a woodburning stove down there but the stove stack was removed away from the fireplace with only the opening for the stack pipe sealed with plastic. Access to the flue damper requires removal of the metal shield across the fireplace opening. It is possible the flue damper was closed and dust entered anyway. I haven't checked to see whether the damper was closed. Since I haven't used the fireplace stove in 15 years I assumed the damper was closed. At any rate they completed the job as promised. The original estimate was correct except for three extra brick that had to be replaced at a cost of $30 each. I am satisfied with the job.

Terrible experience.  Wouldn't recommend him for anything.  Hung up on me when I called to complain.
