    About 1 year after starting service at a new address ATT disconnected my phone number without notifying me.  Only after I called in for repair service was I told that my number was disconnected because it should have been reserved for a business and I would have to get a new number.  No amount of talking would convince them to reconnect my service with the number I have been using for almost a year.  This was a significant inconvenience to us and the disconnect was done without any kind of notice.  This was a totally unprofessional way for them to address a mistake they made by giving me the number in the first place.   I was without service for about 6-7 days until they assigned a new number and got it working - There seemed to be no urgency assigned to the issue.  Customer service was terrible - I was a loyal customer for 40+ years, never late on one bill,  and absolutely no one at ATT did much to help me.

    The service in our area is slow and overpriced. Also this last weekend my internet went out after talking to a useless tech support person and an even more worthless computer I finally got somebody who actually saw a problem and didn't try and tell me it was MY router that was causing the problem. Then they can't schedule anybody to fix it for a week. Internet is not just a luxury anymore, could you imagine the gas company taking a week to fix the main or the telephone company leaving you without any way of calling the police in an emergency.

    We chose AT&T as an internet provider (AT&T Yahoo DSL) since we already have AT&T phone lines. The hook up was easy in that respect. It took almost 2 hours when the technician came out to make the exterior hook ups and it was helpful to be home at that time as he had me check the modem box several times during the session.

    I called AT&T internet service on Oct 13, 2008, spoke to "Jocelyn" Explained I had two separate phone number accounts, one with just a phone, the other with phone and dial-up internet service. Explained I wanted to switch the internet service to the account that currently had the phone only, totally close the local, long distance and dialup ISP on the other account, and upgrade the ISP to DSL. Jocelyn was extremely helpful, explaining several options to me and working with other ATT departments as needed. She arranged for the DSL modem and related materials to be mailed to me next day, and scheduled the cancellation of my no longer wanted phone account to take place on Oct 16th, and scheduled a technician to come to my house on Oct 17 between 4 and 8 pm. Technician to change the phone jack my computer is connected to from the discontinued account number to the one I was keeping, and setup and install the DSL service in place of my old dial-up service. Technician arrived at 4:30 pm, Quickly rewired the computer phone jack as needed, removed the dialup modem, installed the DSL modem and "filters" on my phones, and guided me through the software installation. Technician made sure internet connection and telephones were working properly before leaving. Technician was very fast, efficient and friendly. The $49.99 charge is for the DSL modem; hi-speed DSL service will be a monthly charge of $ 25.00, appearing on my regular ATT phone bill.

    It was time to leave AOL when it took me over an hour to log on my bill paying site to pay ONE bill. The AOL service kept kicking me off and since it was dial-up, it took me forever to navigate back to the bill-pay page (and then got logged off again!).

    The sign-up process was not bad, but there was what I felt was too long of a wait for the service to actually be installed. There were two rebates available to use - there were some problems received the second rebate. After some discussion with AT&T Yahoo Customer Service, it has been finally resolved.

    I HAVE HAD AOL FOR ALMOST 8 YEARS. I HAVE FOUND THAT VERSION 9.0 IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANY CRASHES ON MY SYSTEM. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT VERSION 9.0 IS EXTREMELY MEMORY INTENSIVE (AND ME WITH THE MAX RAM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS). I HAVE SINCE REVERTED BACK TO VERSION 8.0 . I ALSO HAD SEVERAL PHOTOS UPLOADED ON THE ''FTP'' SPACE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS. MY ENTIRE FTP SPACE WENT DOWN AND THE AOL STAFF COULD NOT SEEM TO LOCATE THE DIFFICULTY. I HAVE ALSO FOUND THAT THE AOL HELP SERVICE IS LIMITED AS FAR AS TO HOW MUCH IN DETAIL THEY CAN GO...IF THE DIFFICULTY IS PAST A CERTAIN POINT, IT IS ALMOST AS IF THE SUPPORT STAFF DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO HANDLE IT. THE SERVICE IS ALSO VERY SLOW IN THE AFTERNOON - WHEN I SUSPECT THAT ALL OF THE KIDS ARE OUT OF SCHOOL AND ONLINE.

    ALTHOUGH AMERICA ONLINE IS CERTAINLY NOT ONE OF THE LOWER-PRICED INTERNET SERVICES, IT HAS BEEN A STABLE PROVIDER FOR MANY YEARS. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SWITCH PROVIDERS MANY TIMES, BUT DISCOVERED THAT MANY OF THESE SMALLER SERVICES GO OUT OF BUSINESS. AMERICA ONLINE HAS AT LEAST STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. SOMETIMES THE SERVICE CUTS OFF OR SEEMS TO FREEZE, BUT THIS HAPPENS LESS NOW THAN IT HAS IN THE PAST.
