Urgent Care reviews in Perrysburg

    SUMMARY:
I went to Great Lakes Urgent Care where they completely neglected that my reason for going there was urgent.  They offered me no care beyond what I had already tried.  I ended up in an emergency room two days later, where I received a different diagnosis and excellent care.  Using Great Lakes Urgent Care was a waste of my time and money that led to an ER visit after 48 hours of needless suffering.

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:
The staff at the window was curt and unfriendly.  The wait to get into an examining room was over an hour.  Once in the room, I waited another half hour.  The nurse was surly and acted like she resented her job.  When the doctor came in, he didn't make eye contact and barely took any history.  He failed to ask about duration of the various symptoms I had.  For example, he asked if I had a sore throat, which i told him had started a day earlier. He asked if I had a runny nose, which I said I did, a little, but he failed to ask if that started with the sore throat or if I had had it for a while, which I had.  My nose is runny almost all winter.  He didn't ask if I was exposed to strep throat recently, which I was.  He also failed to look at my intake form, which reported I was on Tylenol at the time of the visit, thus reading my normal temperature as evidence of a viral infection.  He failed to ask if I had a temperature when not taking Tylenol.  He seemed hurried and annoyed at dealing with a person with a sore throat.

After his brief, impersonal, and incomplete interview, the doctor sent in the same surly nurse to do a strep culture.  She rattled the swab around the back of my throat, barely making contact in the back of my throat, completely missing my swollen tonsils, and gagging me, almost making me throw up.  I have never had a nurse or lab technician gag me with a throat culture, and I have had well over 20 different people swab my throat over my lifetime.  I suspect she didn't know what she was doing.

The same nurse returned, reporting that the culture came back negative and that I should go home and take Tylenol.  I was flabbergasted, especially since I had reported on the intake form that I had taken Tylenol that morning and was miserable still.  I told her that I was not satisfied with that advice or diagnosis and wanted to discuss that with the doctor.  I didn't feel the doctor took a sufficient history or evaluation, and I also expressed that I had tried Tylenol and it didn't work. She had the audacity to tell me that there was nothing else that could be done and that I had to leave.  She refused to let me see the doctor or discuss other options.  I insisted I wanted to see the doctor again, an she claimed that he refused to see me.  They literally kicked me out of the office with no advice on treating my symptoms, nothing to help the severe pain I was in, and nothing to help me function over the holiday weekend.  It was a complete waste of my time and money to go there.

A friend suggested trying ibuprofen instead of Tylenol, which actually did give me some relief.  The incompetent nurse didn't even bother to make that suggestion, making the free advice I got from friends more valuable to me than the advice I paid for at Great Lakes Urgent Care.

Never go here.  They are stingy with treatment and extremely conservative in assessing illnesses.  Most doctors would have treated a person with no cough, rapid onset of symptoms, fever, swollen neck glands, and swollen tonsils covered in white pus.  Not this doctor, though.  He acted as if the rapid strep test was the only important diagnostic tool, ignoring the fact that it is not 100% accurate and that his nurse may be unskilled and incompetent. I cannot understand a doctor who is completely unwilling to offer any help to a patient who is in pain.

    UPDATE:
Two days later, I ended up in the emergency room because the symptoms and swelling all increased to the point that I couldn't sleep at night.  There, a doctor assessed my symptoms and came to a radically different conclusion.  Not only were there treatment options available, I was out of the excruciating pain WITHIN ONE HOUR, and most of my symptoms were better by the next morning.  Another doctor was able to do what Great Lakes Urgent Care claimed was impossible:  help relieve my pain and ease my symptoms.  This is empirical evidence suggesting that Great Lakes Urgent Care misdiagnosed me and failed to offer treatment that would help.

    MY RESPONSE TO PROVIDER RESPONSE:
Please notice that the provider has attempted to discredit my review by attacking my motives and behavior.  They avoided addressing any aspect of the care I described.  Instead, they tried to tarnish your impression of me. Their letter is further evidence supporting my impression of Great Lakes Urgent Care as an uncompassionate, incompetent, unethical, and unprofessional establishment.

    1. At no time did I insist on being prescribed any particular medication.  That is a blatant and outright lie to try to discredit this review.
    2.  Any conversation about treatment options would have taken place in the examining room between a patient and health care provider.  Thus, their attempt to smear me personally includes private health care information that I'm pretty sure is protected by HIPAA laws, further supporting my impression of their service as unethical and unprofessional.
    3.  The doctor claimed medication "would not treat [my] symptoms."  A second opinion from an ER doctor proved this incorrect, and my symptoms were successfully treated by a competent doctor.
    4.  The key point is that the doctor REFUSED TO TALK TO ME even after I told them their recommended treatment was exactly what I had tried, unsuccessfully, before coming to an urgent care facility.  You better believe I became upset as they continued to ignore the fact that I was suffering and they refused to even discuss doing anything to help.  Even if I were the worst, nastiest, most vile person on the planet, I would still deserve compassionate and professional care from a health care provider.  No amount of bad behavior on my part would change the fact that they offered me no help, which was the professional service they advertise.

Please use my review to help you avoid suffering the same experience.  Avoid their business at all costs.
