  • I am completely unimpressed with this practice.  My first appt I waited about a month for an appt after my dr referred me to them for removal of basal cell spots.  I had expected that my dr would send over my pathology with my referral but did not so the first appt unfortunately we weren't able to discuss next steps.    When they did receive my pathology report, they called to schedule the appt to remove the spots about a month later. 
    Prior to my surgery I was told the cost of my procedure and that I would not be able to work out for a few weeks post surgery.  I re-arranged my calendar for the surgery, cancelling a business trip, took a day off work, paid a fee to put my gym membership on hold, arranged for someone to get my son to school as my appt was at 730.  The morning of the surgery we had a few inches of snow so I left early to ensure I got there on time.  It took me 45 minutes to get there and 40 minutes before my appt, my phone rang to tell me they would be cancelling due to a family member illness of the dr the day before.  I can understand this happens and family is the priority but I felt like there was no consideration for my time and effort to make the surgery appt.  When I asked if an alternate dr could do the procedure, I was told no because they don't come in until later.  When I asked why I wasn't called the night before when they knew I was told nobody had access to phone numbers.  A call the night before would have alleviated 3 of the arrangements I made and could have went to work - in 2016 with remote access for everything, it's hard to understand why nobody could get my number the night before.  They offered to reschedule in 3 weeks - ironically when I already rescheduled my business trip.  After I told them it wouldn't work, they made an appt available 2 days later for me.  When the billing person called me prior to the surgery she told me the cost would be $x and due upon services.  When I went to check out, the bill was $x +$260.  Well, that was the final amount.  As I stood at the desk I was told 4 different varying amounts with a $300 span between the lowest and highest.  When I asked to speak to the billing person to understand this variance, I was met with an attitude about the situation and claims she made that she told me that the $x was the least possible cost.  This conversation did not happen as I would have asked what would cause an increase to understand how my money is being spent.  When I told her she did not tell me that last week, they just stood and stared at me to pay the bill.  When I asked who owns the practice that I would like to talk to them, I was referred to the office manager who was not in the office yet.
    I called the office manager later in the day and left a message asking her to please call me.  She called me back about an hour later.  I discussed with her that I wasn't happy with my experience this week.  We started with the billing and attitude this morning.  I explained that I have no faith I was being billed correctly as I had 4 different amounts in a period of minutes.  She agreed to address the billing person's attitude (which was witnessed by the other front office person who was mouthing apologies to me during this) and apologized for the inaccurate quotes with a promise to talk to both of the people today.  She mentioned I should have been told on the call and this morning that an amount over the "conservative guidelines" could be billed later.  I was not told this on the call nor this morning. 
    While we talked, I also expressed my frustration that they never, ever answer the phones there and she agreed that they don't do that - everything goes to voice mail as a practice.  This is extremely frustrating as when I have tried to call them over the last month, it was when I could step away from work and didn't want everyone to hear my health concern phone calls but their "standard" doesn't allow for this to happen.  I suggested that they learn their lessons from Tuesday and see if they can improve service for another patient going forward and she then compared my surgery appt to remove the cancer cells from my arm to a hair appt where there would be no backup.  She minimized my health issues to tell me it was not as serious as melanoma and patients can wait for a reschedule.  I told her that the combination of things she has said to me on the call lead me to believe they are not patient centric - from not answering phones, attitude to patients, not respecting people's time, billing issues, minimizing patient's health issues as not important and believing they do not need to look at practices to adjust after lessons learned.  I expressed this to the office manager and she agreed I should find another place to go because "we will never make you happy".  I do not think what I am asking for is unreasonable but apparently communication, patient sensitivity and priority is too much to ask from this practice.

  • The staff at Northeast Dermotology are very friendly and helpful. The staff has always been very helpful and friendly whenever I have needed to reschedule an appointment or get in quickly. In addition, the staff is very good about getting you in at your appointment time, I have never had to wait long in the waiting room. Dr. McKelvey is very knowledgable and through in explaining all of the options available. I have seen a lot of dermatologists due to my severe eczema. Dr. McKelvey has been able to provide unique treatment options and is focused on finding the root cause of the problem not just a short term treatment like most dermatologists.  I highly recommend Northeast Dermotology, I have not had any issues with them.

  • She's very good, and I've used her off and on for years. She's very patient and she loves to teach people how to care for themselves. She tells me when she absolutely does not want me to use a generic substitute on a prescription. Otherwise, I am free to use generics for the prescription. She and her office staff are warm and friendly. The office is neat and clean and easy to get to because it's near the freeway. It's a good experience when I have to go to a dermatologist. More importantly, her treatments and recommendations have always worked for me. She takes care of the problem.

  • She's a fine doctor. My husband likes her a lot. She's very friendly and congenial. The office staff is very kind and helpful. We don't have to wait long to make appointments and have never waited more than 5 minutes in the waiting.

  • She has just moved her offices from Columbus to New Albany. She seems to be a very caring person. She listens to you, talks to you, and has time for you. She tries to explain what she is doing and why she is doing it. She has six children out of which three are her own children and three are adopted, so she is a very caring person.

  • i wish to report a very satisfactory resolution to a less than ideal report I posted on Angie's List regarding Dr. Shuen. Following the posting, Dr. Shuen contacted me by phone and in good faith initiated a problem solving conversation. She listened well, worked cooperatively with me, and requested that we try again. We agreed to "push the re-set button." I visited her office again for an appointment. Dr. Shuen was attentive, communicative, and professional. The net result of my experiences with Dr. Shuen's office is that I will not hesitate to return for additional visits and can recommend her to others. Sometimes, as in this case, the test of a business is in how they respond to problems. All in all a very good outcome.

  • She was the best dermatologist we went to and she was a really great lady. A lot of dermatologists are weird and seem to just hand out medication and hope that it works, but she talked to us and was attentive. She wasn’t even on our insurance plan anymore but we kept going because she was so great. She would spend time with my son and work with him until they found the problem. They staff was all very friendly and they did everything right; it was a top-notch office. I recommend this doctor.

  • I was surprised when the doctor spent a lot of time with me...pretty rare! The office staff are super nice! The only tiny thing is that I think I had plantar warts on the bottom of my feet and she thought they were's easy to have differing opinions on that. Her fix (shaving the skin down) didn't work and mine (duct tape on the bottom of my foot for weeks) did. Definitely going back though!
