Champion Windows and Home Exteriors of Cincinnati
An over the deck project was designed that required HOA approval. Champion's handling of this project lacked any sort of professional behavior. 1) Champion secured funding from a loan account prior to submitting and receiving HOA approval. This caused the customer, me, to have to start making payments on a project that was not approved. I contacted Champion to inquiry about this and then they finally submitted for HOA approval. 2) The HOA ended up denying the project for not conforming to HOA rules and no other solution would fit the dimensions. I emailed our sales rep multiple times, I called the sales rep and left voice messages asking for a process to cancel project due to HOA denial. No reply was received. I called Champion office and asked to speak to the sales rep's supervisor/manager. I left a voice message with that person. I posted a message on the Champion website asking for someone to contact us about the cancellation process. 3) After an email request, asking another Champion employee for the sales reps supervisor/manager contact info, the sales rep finally responded that the contract was cancelled and an email message confirmation would be sent in the morning. That was 4 days ago (as of this writing) and no email has been received. I called the finance company and we still have a balance due on a loan that should never have been started before HOA approval was received. I have all sent and received email messages necessary to verify the above statements. Champion's actions on this project (securing funding before approval, refusing to respond to customer emails and voice mails) are not befitting a trusted company.

    All Decked Out 513 LLC
In October, 2018-I contacted All Decked Out for the purpose of constructing two (2) beams that would connect the rear wall of my house and the detached garage. The two beams would serve as a connecting structure or mini pergola for the back courtyard area. The beams were to have lights added to them also. I paid a $60.00 consultation fee that was to be taken out of my final total for the project...a mock up drawing of the project was never done by the All Decked out staff. Upon agreement to commence the work to be done, I paid for $945.00 (half) of the total $1,890.00 project for the two beams. I however submitted in digital format a mock-up sample of the look I was hoping to achieve by installing the beams. Upon booking my job for the end of May/ early June, 2019...I was approached by the owner Joe Hagan about an option/addition to my project called a leuvered roof. The leuvered roof was outside of my price range substantially (an additional $14 grand). I informed the All Decked out staff that I wanted to proceed with my original two beam design and was reassured repeatedly that we could install the two beams to look like the original desired look and if I changed my mind later, I could always add the leuvered roof option to my project for an additional $14, 000.00 dollars. We proceeded with the original project. Upon near completion of the two beam design, I was very disappointed with the look. It looked very much like an unfinished roof frame. I contacted the foreman and the owner of all decked out and was told by the owner (Joe Hagan) that he agreed that the beams "looked underwhelming" (his words) and that he would proceed with the removal of the beams. On 6-19-19, I was informed that the removal of the beams would cost me $700.00 out of my original down payment for the project. The $700.00 charged to myself would serve as labor fee for the contractor who installed the beams that "looked underwhelming" per Joe Hagan. I feel this is completely wrong to the customer as I am left with one side of my home left with concrete siding that needs repaired and the other side of my garage left with holes in the vinyl siding that will beed to be replaced completely by myself to get the home structure back in the original shape prior to the beginning of the project. Why am I responsible for them completely missing the mark on the vision of this project? I have also contacted the better business bureau to recover my $700.00. Costs for construction work should not be passed on to the consumer if all are in agreement that the finished project "looked underwhelming".

    Edwards Construction Inc
I already submitted a review but it popped up again asking me to finish it. Now all the text is gone. Basically I came on AL today to find this builder again. He was amazingly professional and took time to review our structural engineer report and listen to what a previous company had done costing us almost $10k. He gave us some options to get rid of the paver patio mess and start fresh. He even told us how to run ads and what to charge for the raw materials. For the new deck, he drew several sketches and took a few measurements. He could not have been more efficient and detailed. We plan on hiring them. I was a little shocked about the F reviews but it's not for actual work so we are not worried about it. You can tell how someone has a standard of work and would never compromise their integrity to make money. It costs what it costs. I wish we would have found them first!!!

We called Edwards for an estimate. I'm not the most communicative person, i.e., I never answer my phone. But they came out and explained the current situation with the deck, reviewed our structural engineer report, and agreed the entire thing was trash and needed to come down. They offered several options according to our budget. 1. Leave most of it and build the deck over it. 2. Put an ad for someone to remove it and they can have or pay a little for each paver. He told me how to word the ad and what I should ask for, etc... 3. He could find someone to haul the pavers away. There may have been more options but I don't remember now and the dysfunctional patio is still there--which is why I came back to Angie's List to find them. I'm shocked to see all these F reviews over not getting a call back or something other than the quality of the work performed. Granted, if someone is horrible to you we'd like to know. But clearly if you meet the people from this company, it's all business. He gave us ideas of how he would build the deck and actually we want the same shape we have now but made of wood. We don't want pressure treated/toxic vinyl or anything of that sort, so we know it's going to be more expensive upfront. While we haven't employed them yet, because they offer a free estimate, we plan on it despite the negative reviews because they aren't telling fair and accurate feedback of a final project. I say if you are interested in this company, please give them the opportunity to meet with you and do the work. What's even more ironic is the company that we paid nearly $10k to for the horrible work we need fixed now, is listed on AL as a preferred provider. No way.

    Mcallister Custom Homes Inc
It did not go well at all. Since I could not locate Dan, I could not bring these problems to his attention. The three doors on the porch have all disintegrated and fell apart. The deck was made out of artificial wood and they laid the boards right next to each other. The boards ended up holding water and warped. The master bathroom shower had to be rebuilt as it was not constructed correctly ending up with an extreme mold problem. The pipes under the shower were not insulated so they froze. The worst part is they had connected new copper wiring to the house's original aluminum wiring incorrectly and it was hidden behind the drywall. It could have caused a house fire. Indeed an outlet that was wired copper to aluminum did catch fire. Fortunately an electrician caught the problem while rewiring the house. In spite of all of this, Dan did come up with some clever solutions but I would never hire them again.

    Odd Jobs Unlimited
Chuck, Shawn and Matthew were complete professionals the entire 4 months the scope of this project covered. Once Chuck realized the extent of the damage he stopped and told me that this job was going to require extra hands. He and his team had to build a retaining wall in my basement to hold up the damaged structural beams. They cut out all the rotted pressure treated wood and replaced everything with extra supports. They discovered no flashing was present around my fireplace exterior and my French doors that flank the fireplace. Chuck and Shawn fixed this defect and also replaced my entire fireplace insert and flue. They also made sure all the electrical outlets were secure. They insulated the fireplace and replaced the cap as well as repairing damage on the roof and siding of my chimney. Finally they finished all the work with a new coat of paint on the entire wall where the fireplace is located. Every day they put down drop cloths and were careful to keep my house as clean as they could. They vacuumed up all debris daily. They were always willing to add to the project, fixing little things for me at no extra cost. They did a beautiful custom woodworking surround for the 111 year old mantle I replaced my old mantle with. I felt like the total cost of the repair was fair. I am totally satisfied with the end result and will absolutely call Chuck and Odd Jobs Unlimited for other repairs on my property.

    Estridge Carpentry
Contracted with Estridge Carpentry because they were the only one willing to acquire the necessary building permits. Estridge was not the cheapest and they charged extra to acquire the permits but I thought it was worth it so I need not get involved. The following synopsis of problems was discussed with Christopher Estridge and he and his team did show up later to correct some of the problems left behind but there are other problems we had that should be corrected on Estridge Carpentry's end. 1) Despite numerous calls asking for a start date the workers just showed up unannounced to start this large project. We had no time to prepare. 2) Information from the building inspector's office was never relayed to the carpenter. 3)The mess left behind was inexcusable. The amount of nails, screws, old and new wood pieces and even tools and supplies left in my lawn and driveway. I spent many days scouring my driveway for debris so my tires do not get destroyed. I got blisters from moving dirt and rocks from my lawn area so I can mow. Why didn't I just have the carpenter fix these things before payment? I got so tired of him going in and out of my house using the restroom, complaining how far he had to drive to get to me, how he had to pay for his own gas etc, etc. . He did good work (for the most part) but everything was taking longer and bigger than originally thought, I wanted it (and him) done and gone. I thought I could finish the cleanup but that was bigger than I originally estimated. Sorry Chris, but I feel that I need to inform people of my experiences. What if I had been disabled or elderly? I would have been left with the problems we experienced. To his credit, our interactions with Chris himself were highly professional, but it did seem like we were assigned second-string installers.

    Zimax Inc.
I am unsure of the date I first called, but the phone call was answered, and I was told that an estimate was $50, even though Angies List listed them as providing free estimates. Was told that was a mistake and should have been changed, but that theyd honor it for me anyway. The lady was very nice about it and we set an appointment. -Appt on 4/6/18 @ 8am Garrad showed up and looked the project over. Feel positive about it. Was told it might take a couple weeks to get estimate together. Never heard back. -Called 5/7 @ 11:45am to check in on the estimate and was told shed get with Garrod in the morning and get back to me. Never called back. -Called 5/20 11:30am. No answer and voicemail full, could not leave message -Called 5/20 2:08pm. No answer mailbox no longer full, left message again -Called 5/31 1:00pm Given a estimate of $30-40,000 for whole project. Felt like a blow-off so Id stop calling. Thats in no way a legitimate estimate, but a ballpark that could have been given without anyone even coming to look at the project. I asked for a breakdown of the estimate so that I might be able to figure out what part was making it so expensive and to see if we could alter what we wanted to bring it down to within our budget. She didnt know but said Garrad would be consulted and I would hear back in a couple days. Never heard back. 6/14/18 Tried email, but got no reply 6/19/18 called left message 6/29/18 no answer left message It's been almost 5 months since Garrad came to look the project over. My guess is that the project was too much for him and I understand that, but is it too much to ask that a contractor be upfront and honest about that? They have wasted my time and potentially cost us the ability to get the project done this year. That is what makes me angry enough to leave a bad review. I will say this experience started off well. They were very kind in waiving the estimate fee even though it was apparently Angies List fault that it was still listed as free on the site, the lady was pleasant on the phone, and Garrad was very professional and thorough when he came to look the project over. But I have felt completely dismissed since that day. Usually I wont bother leaving a less than A rating. If you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all, right? The one thing that really infuriates me, though, is the absolute disrespect that I see from so many contractors that can't be bothered to return calls. Many times it is simply that they do not want, or cannot do, the project at hand. Is it too much to ask for them to plainly say that rather than drag a potential customer along for months on end with no resolution? After 5 months it is clear that this is a case of them not wanting the job, but I am left with leaving a review of my experience as the only method of resolution.

    BTS Contracting Inc
I don't like to leave bad reviews. Mostly, less than an A rating would likely see me leaving no review at all rather than say something negative. The one thing that really angers me, though, is the absolute disrespect that I see from so many contractors that can't be bothered to return calls. Many times it is simply that they do not want, or cannot do, the project at hand. Is it too much to ask for them to state that rather than drag a potential customer along for months on end with no resolution? After 3 months of a perfectly reasonable amount of unreturned calls, this is the only way I can see for me to get some resolution. Here are the notes I went: -Called and left message 3/26/18 @ 2:20pm -Again 3/29/18 @11am -Bob called back, coming by 4/3/18 10-12pm -4/3 Bob came and looked it over said hed get back to me within a couple weeks with an estimate. I was patient. He said it could be a couple weeks, but over a month passed with no word: -5/7 left message requesting update -5/20 again left message asking for update -5/31 tried calling. Number busy -6/19 called left message for the last time It is now 6/29/18 and I still have gotten no reply from this business. Chances are they will do what all these contractors do... reply to this bad review with something along the lines of, "I'm so sorry, this is not typical for us" or "I don't recall getting these messages" or "Got real busy on a project yada yada yada". They also might claim that they "had the wrong number for me", but when calling this business, the voicemail message says to state your name, phone number and address. Each time, I did that. It'd be hard to believe that after each message, they got it wrong. It's been 3 months since he came to look the project over. We were not in a hurry to have the project completed, but I did make it clear that we were ready to get started, wanted it done before summer was over, and wanted to at least know when it could start and how much this was to cost. My guess is that the project was too much for them and I understand that, but to not even have the courtesy of a response to repeated phone calls is rude and disrespectful. They have wasted my time and potentially cost us the ability to get the project done this year. That is what makes me angry enough to leave a bad review.

    Deck & Fence Renewal Systems
This is the second time I have used this company, and each time their bid was fair and they were able to finish my deck and make it look great again. The staff spent extra time cleaning it to make sure it met our standards, and I would definitely hire them again.
