Deck Cleaning reviews in Milford

    BTS Contracting Inc
I don't like to leave bad reviews. Mostly, less than an A rating would likely see me leaving no review at all rather than say something negative. The one thing that really angers me, though, is the absolute disrespect that I see from so many contractors that can't be bothered to return calls. Many times it is simply that they do not want, or cannot do, the project at hand. Is it too much to ask for them to state that rather than drag a potential customer along for months on end with no resolution? After 3 months of a perfectly reasonable amount of unreturned calls, this is the only way I can see for me to get some resolution. Here are the notes I went: -Called and left message 3/26/18 @ 2:20pm -Again 3/29/18 @11am -Bob called back, coming by 4/3/18 10-12pm -4/3 Bob came and looked it over said hed get back to me within a couple weeks with an estimate. I was patient. He said it could be a couple weeks, but over a month passed with no word: -5/7 left message requesting update -5/20 again left message asking for update -5/31 tried calling. Number busy -6/19 called left message for the last time It is now 6/29/18 and I still have gotten no reply from this business. Chances are they will do what all these contractors do... reply to this bad review with something along the lines of, "I'm so sorry, this is not typical for us" or "I don't recall getting these messages" or "Got real busy on a project yada yada yada". They also might claim that they "had the wrong number for me", but when calling this business, the voicemail message says to state your name, phone number and address. Each time, I did that. It'd be hard to believe that after each message, they got it wrong. It's been 3 months since he came to look the project over. We were not in a hurry to have the project completed, but I did make it clear that we were ready to get started, wanted it done before summer was over, and wanted to at least know when it could start and how much this was to cost. My guess is that the project was too much for them and I understand that, but to not even have the courtesy of a response to repeated phone calls is rude and disrespectful. They have wasted my time and potentially cost us the ability to get the project done this year. That is what makes me angry enough to leave a bad review.

This is the second time I have used this company, and each time their bid was fair and they were able to finish my deck and make it look great again. The staff spent extra time cleaning it to make sure it met our standards, and I would definitely hire them again.

Went very well. Met with James at the scheduled time for initial inspection and estimate for full job. Agreed to price, taking into account coupon and James set about with the first step, cleaning. After cleaning we agreed on follow up time to do the sealing. End result was a very happy deck and a very happy customer. James was very pleasant to work with and all work was completed on schedule and very well done.

I really dislike leaving a review when work wasn't performed, but my biggest pet peeve when dealing with contractors is how awful most of them are when it comes to communication and the difficulties with getting them to show up when they say they will. That's what led me to leave this review. I found them on here and due to their good rating, I reached out through this site for an estimate. After repeated attempts, I gave up. Josh called and set up an appointment. He was very polite and professional on the phone. But he never showed nor even called to let me know he wasn't coming. I emailed them couple days later (on 6/7), giving them the benefit of the doubt. Got another call from Josh and was told he'd be coming by on a certain day/time. Again a no show, nor a call. I emailed again (on 6/9) letting them know that it happened again and that I had someone else coming to look at the project. Got an email from someone (ON 6/14): "I very sorry for any inconvenience this May have caused you. I just started letting Josh schedule and perform estimates about 2 weeks ago. I should have monitored him a little closer. " - No offer to come out again or anything. I replied to that email (on 6/14) in the hopes of getting more than 1 estimate for the job. I'm a sucker for 2nd and 3rd chances, what can I say. Got a reply from Brian (on 6/17) saying that he would be happy to come look at it but couldn't come till later the following week. I replied (on 6/17) that waiting wasn't a problem, but I was out of town the days he listed and offered other dates the following week. I never heard back after that. I could have reached out again, but I feel that, as a consumer, it is not my responsibility to continually follow up with a contractor. Especially after the repeated no shows. If they really were sorry and wanted the job, they'd have gotten back to me. I also feel that being unable to follow-up something as simple as an email, and for such a large project (i.e. $$$) is likely due to poor attention to detail in the running of a business. If I'm going to be dropping what would likely be tens of thousands of dollars, I want to be real sure that the person I'm paying is fully capable of managing all the little details. I would imagine that if you were persistent enough, they might do very good work for you. But I'm not willing to work that hard to give them a job.

    Queen City Pressure Washing
They gave me an estimate in May. Had to delay it several times as my landscapers were not done installing extensive landscaping. They said they could work around them and I told them it couldn't be done. They came out on June 14th to do the pressure washing. We immediately noticed that the driveway was not done well. It was very visible where they pressured washed "at" the driveway and did not do a thorough job. I contacted them and they said they would do it again. I contacted them again on the 17th asking them to please come out and look at it. there were stains were there hadn't been any - I sent them pictures. The deck stain was sloppy and not even. They did not do between the boards so untreated lumber was very visible. They missed some spots entirely. They came out and took tape off the hardware and stained there and it did not match the rest of the railings. I contacted them repeatedly that it needed to be redone. They kept telling me they would look at it. Took them almost a week and did not show up when they said they would be there. They finally called and told me they would be out on June 27th to take care of it. When I got home they had not been there. I told them at that point to forget it. I could not wait any longer since my deck furniture had been out in the yard for 17 days plus I couldn't use my deck. told them specifically not to come. The next day I got home and they had redone the deck, taken furniture off deck again that I had just put up the day before after I told them not to come back. They were basically trespassing since I had told them not to come. They didn't call me or text me to tell me they were there. They just showed up and left a card and blocked my deck off again. I was so mad. I asked them for a partial refund since I paid them the day they did the initial staining- I paid them in good faith. In the 13+ years that I have used angie's list this is the first time I have had this type of issue with someone I found on the list. I still believe they owe me a refund as the driveway looks terrible and they still did not stain in between boards or fix the different look where they stained railings.
UPDATE TO REVIEW: They are not being honest about me contacting them at night etc. I have all the texts. And the only time I didn't answer their call was once when I was in a meeting as I do work during the day and after I told them never to come back when they didn't show on a day they said they would on Monday June 27th-they called me then because I told them not to come back and that I wanted a partial refund since I was going to have to have the deck redone. Then they called me right afterwards but I was done with them. They then did NOT call me when they showed up at my house the following day to attempt to redo my deck and did not fix the problem. Just look at the pictures posted with the review- they say it all.

Overall, the deck ended up sanded and stained, so that was good. The process itself was uneven at best. There was little communication from the provider - we bought a deck restoration deal and they randomly showed up one day, then left an estimate with additional costs (that weren't explained) in our door. We had several days of rain, then they randomly showed up one day to powerwash the deck - and in the process, flattened all of my plants around the front of the deck. The plants were not only knocked flat, but covered with dirt and debris and there were areas where the powerwashing had clearly kicked up clodes of dirt from the flower bed itself.
I didn't even know the powerwashing was going to happen the day that it did - I came home to find a catalogue of stain colors to choose from stuck in my front door and a powerwashed deck (and flattened garden). There was no other note or any communication left except for the stain catalogue - I had to call the next day to find out what I was supposed to do and how things would be scheduled. I would have expected at least a head's up phone call (or even an email!) that said "We're going to come by today to begin work, we'll leave a stain sample book for you to choose from..." But nothing. Just a "Oh! Well, I guess they came out today. Huh."
When I called to discuss ask about the next steps and select a stain, I also brought up my flattened plants. At first, the person I spoke to started to get defensive, then settled down and tried to explain to me what probably happened - he was sure the worker had placed a tarp over the plants, the power washing itself is really powerful, etc. It honestly felt like a brush-off to me, but I also understand that things happen, it just seemed really careless.  I did ask that they take more care around the plants when they came out to stain - he assured me they would.
When they came out to stain the deck, it was, again, without a real heads-up, though I at least had a timeframe in mind since I had called them. The stain job itself looked fine - I mean, the deck was stained, so that was a check in the win column. HOWEVER, several of my plants were also covered in stain, as were the leaves on the tree by the deck and the ground around the deck. A tree seedling that was close the deck was completely red.
On top of all of that, I felt I was a little taken in by the deal, but I'll own that. I should have done my due diligence and found out exactly what the costs would be and why it would cost $350 more than the $439, that I thought included power washing, sanding, and staining on our very ordinary-sized deck. I understand that there can always be extra costs, but I wasn't anticipating that much overage - especially for such non-communicative and relatively careless service.
Overall - I got what I paid for, and our deck was restored. I just wish getting it done would have been a smoother process. I learned my lesson to always, always follow up to understand deal limitations. That's totally on me.
As for the work itself - the deck is great. My plants, not so much. I won't hire them again because I don't feel my concerns - when I raised them about the power washing knocking over my plants - was taken seriously or communicated to the worker. Especially when several of my plants ended up stained red like the deck.

The guy who did the  work was friendly enough but always just showed up without notice or an appointment.  It took several visits to complete due to weather.  I would not use them again due to the lack of professionalism in regards to not making appointments or giving prior notice that they were coming.

Initially, they came out on 3/19/14 to pressure wash my deck, and returned on 3/24/14 to seal with the appropriate color. The color did not match the paint chip from the color guide I requested. The paint then immediately started to bubble along the railing, and on parts of the flooring. I called them out in April, the technician came out to look at it and advised they would correct the issue. We advised them we know they are getting into their busy season so don't rush. However, we never heard back until we contacted them on August 1st. After 3 phone calls in August, all of which we did advised the deck looks awful (paint peeling, split marks on wood boards, rough surfaces on railing) and advised the deck needs to be redone. Their warranty states "we stand behind every deck we restore with a 1 year unlimited warranty. We offer the best no fade warranty in the business." I looked up the owners name (Dan Stoddard) and he personally came out on 8/20/14 and he told us they only intended to do a small touch up. I spoke with him a few days later and brought up their guarantee, and he advised he will absolutely not redo that deck floor. He came out 8/26/14 and touched up a few spots, and left us with 2 gallons of stain. He color-matched the stain himself, assuming the stain has faded (which is guaranteed not to fade per their warrenty), now my deck has 2 different colors.

    Short version:
They responded quickly, gave me a fair price, quoted me for semi-solid stain and applied solid deck cover instead. I was happy with the quoted price and the quality of work. However I was quite peeved that I was quoted semi-solid (even had a detailed conversation with DRS about the brand, color, and type of stain (semi-solid) I wanted to have applied. Yet they still applied solid stain.
    Full version:
DRS was very quick in responding to my initial request for a quote. The price for the size of my deck (approx 700 sq. feet) was very fair (approx. $1000.00). I discussed with them that the deck was only stained once since it was built in 2010 and was stained with the same brand of stain that DRS uses (Defy). I informed them specifically of the brand, color, and type (semi-solid) that was used on the 1st staining and they agreed to use the same thing. They estimated doing the work in approx. 2 to 4 weeks. They were upfront about not giving me a solid start date, since it had been very rainy and the forecast was calling for rain for the next several days. The person from DRS told me they wanted to get the best result, which required the deck being dry before cleaning and applying stain. I appreciated their honesty and agreed to their estimated time frame.
After about 4 weeks, I ended up receiving a voicemail on Sunday afternoon from DRS saying they would be there the next morning (Monday) to start the pressure washing. I have to say, their notice was a little short and I'm glad I was home to clear off the furniture before their arrival. I called them back to tell them I was ready and asked when they would actually do the staining. I was told "later in the week" (Thursday / Friday), since rain was forecast for Tuesday. I arranged to work from home on Thurs. / Friday since I wanted to be there to see them get started. DRS never told me I had to be home, but I like to make sure everything goes according to the quoted plan. When I came home from work on Tuesday, I was surprised to find my deck had been stained with solid stain. NO ONE CALLED ME to tell me they were coming on Tuesday and no one said anything about solid stain. The actual quote, specified they would be using "System #2" which specifies "solid stain", but the person who provided the quote hand wrote "semi-solid" above the "solid stain" description. Regardless of this quote and our specific conversation (a month earlier) about using semi-solid stain, they applied a solid deck cover without notifying me they were coming or using that stain.

They told us they would be there between 3:00 and 5:00, and they showed up right on time.  They did the job well, cleaned up after themselves, and were gone!  They didn’t try to charge us more than what we had already paid for the Big Deal.  They did a good job.
