    They were the only place out of various people we got estimates from who use a professional-grade oil-based stain. It looks great. First, the deck cleaners came. They washed the wood to prep it for the stain. The next day another person came out to work on some stains that the cleaning crew thought needed extra attention. The following week, the staining crew arrived. They arrived early in the morning and worked until dark. They finished some minor touch-ups a few days later. We appreciate that they fully tarped everything so there was no mess. They were careful when moving our plants and furniture as well. Everyone was professional and organized. I'm curious to see how well the stain stands up to the elements over the coming year, but as of now we plan to use On Deck again.

    Took a couple of weeks to get an estimate. There is no one on the office to take calls and they take a few days to return calls. It took a month to get scheduled for the work. The deck was cleaned and was a good job. It rained on the day that the window cleaning was schedules and I am now waiting another month to get the work done.

    Seemed experienced on the phone. But unprofessional in approach. would not commit a date/time. But, showed up without notice. Rushed to finish a shoddy job on a friday afternoon just before it was going to rain. Most of it got washed out, called and sent photos of how bad it was. Promised to take care. But didn't care to visit or call.

    Contact via email was quite successful and their price was much better than the other bids.  Our condo association prescribed the stain to use from Sherwin Williams.  The problem came up after the fact, that the stain has changed formulas over the years and did not cover well at all.  The final appearance looks, "undone".  We had to inquire if the deck was stained at all.  The problem was not with the company, but with the stain, however, we would have liked to known that there would be an issue before it was done.

    I called to set up an appointment to have our deck  (screened-in and exposed) looked over since it was 15 years old and needed much work.  Greg responded to my call immediately and did the work the next day (we were lucky with the weather).  Since we called early in the year he gave us a good price.    He was very honest and said that the screened-in portion did not need any work.  We thought the work would take days, but two men were sent over and finished in a few hours.  (Staining will have to wait until next year since the wood takes some time to cure).  The men were very polite and clean.  The deck looks great.  Greg was very personable and it was a pleasure to do business with him.

    Building Character did an excellent job.  They were on time, courteous, and friendly.   The owner actually answers his phone so you do not have to waste time playing phone tag.  The company clearly takes pride in their work.  There were a couple things I wanted done differently and each time I called, they came back out immediately.  The result is a deck that makes me and my family very happy.  I will definitely use their services again and recommend them to others.

    After a necessary 90 day wait for the treated lumber to thoroughly dry, Building Character returned to complete the finishing of our deck. With our monsoon-like rains, Jared had to find a two-day window to do the work.  He stayed on top of the weather reports and kept us informed of possible dates.  We finally got the break we needed and Jared jumped on it.
    We had a couple of questions concerning color and Jared and his men went the extra mile to ensure that we were totally satisfied with the color.  They took extra care to see that the application was done correctly and they regularly checked with us to ensure that we continued to be satisfied with the work.
    Now that the work is done, we have the best and nicest looking deck in our development.
    There is no question that the top priority for Building Character, from Jared down through the entire organization, is customer satisfaction.

    Greg was very prompt in giving me an estimate and flexed the time that the job was scheduled to be done around some other work I was having done on the house.  The crew completed the job in 2 days and performed the work as expected.

    Contacted DFRS in April/May after seeing good reviews from Angie's List.  Greg came by to look at the job and give an estimate.  He was very prompt and spent a fair amount of time reviewing the job with me and talking details.  He mentioned that with the weather and workload it may take until June to get into the queue.
    June came around and I hadn't heard anything from DFRS.  I called them and apparently there was no "ticket" in the system so I wasn't even scheduled for the work.  It was early July before they came out to sand/clean and repair the stairs.  The clean and sanding seemed good to me although with my type of deck color there were a lot of spots that still had the old stain on.  The deck stair repairs, however, were not at all what I had expected.  I thought we had discussed replacing the existing stairs because there was a split in the left stringer.  I had done a temporary repair thinking that DFRS would replace.  However DFRS simply cut a new stringer and nailed it to the existing stringer.  When I called DFRS Greg said a job like that would have costed a lot more and that it wasn't his expectation to replace the stairs entirely.  Again I thought we had covered that during his initial visit.  So, we were obviously not on the same page.
    A few days later they were supposed to apply the color but did not end up coming out.  I was called the next day to say they'd be in early the next week instead.  In fact, they actually came out that Saturday to do the work.  I did not get a call to let me know they were coming earlier.  
    The applied color looked really good, and I'm happy with the coverage they did on the deck.  They used some kind of sprayer to apply the stain and it got EVERYWHERE.  Pretty much every surface was covered including the sump-pump line, deck lights, and some of the siding along our house.  I called DFRS to come cleanup the house siding which they did promptly.
    Overall, I was fairly happy with the actual deck coverage but expected more professionalism from the workers who applied the stain.  I think communication could be a LOT better, and I think having them do the work when nobody is home is not a great idea.  I would have preferred to be around to see the work and make sure things were ready.  DFRS would not be my first choice to perform this work again.
