    Nuwave Pool Service
Complete catastrophe. The lines weren't properly winterized and one of them froze and ruptured. He refused to admit fault even when all other explanations were ruled out. (There are no tree roots that could have broken the line; the union where the line meets the pool was intact; etc.) In the end he recognized there were no other plausible explanations and said he supposed I'd have to take him to court. It cost me a little over $2000 to have the damage to the pool line repaired, plus another $450 for a new pump, whose filter also froze and broke over the winter, plus the cost of repairing the parts of the garden and lawn that were torn up during the repair. And let me repeat: he recognized the only plausible explanation was that he was at fault, and he did not stand by his work. This to me is the textbook definition of being unprofessional. What a mess. I wish I'd never heard of NuWave Pools.

Couldn't have gone worse. The pool wasn't winterized properly and a line froze and broke. Nuwave admitted what went wrong but would do nothing to fix it. I had to pay another company over $2000 to repair the line. But the story gets worse: now I've discovered where all the leaking water went to through the broken line. It undermined the concrete deck around the pool, and now that is pulling away from the pool. Nuwave has been a total nightmare.

Total failure. The new ball valve worked fine but it was improperly fitted to the existing plumbing and the coupling broke. Jay came back and repaired it, and again it broke. Again he came back, again it broke. After that I called another pool company to fix it. They said the problem was easily avoidable: Jay had simply overtightened the fittings. Three times in a row. Bad workmanship is one problem, a basic failure to understand what went wrong is quite another, and with Nuwave I ran into both.

Lines were improperly winterized, and one of them froze and burst. Repairing the damage cost me about $3000. Jay (the proprietor) insisted it was impossible for a line to have frozen: "the ground hasn't frozen two feet deep in years," he said, but this line isn't two feet down. (Closer to six inches.) He said the damage must have come from tree roots; there are no tree roots near the line. He said the port where the line meets the pool must have rotted out with age -- and in fairness, the pool is at least 50 years old -- but that particular port (that whole line, in fact) is new. In short, he makes excuses and does not accept personal responsibility. Three different pool companies confirmed for me that the only plausible cause for the damage was improper winterization, and two of those companies described Jay as disreputable. I cannot recommend this highly enough: stay clear of Nuwave Pools.

    1) Botched job. Jay came back twice to fix it, failed both times. Ultimately I had to hire another company to do the work. They told me the problem couldn't have been easier to solve: Jay overtightened the coupling to the point that it broke, then repeated that error twice more. (See picture.) He then resorted to using too much glue ("six times as much as he needed," said the second repairman), which weakened the plastic further. (PVC glue is a solvent; it works by softening the plastic, then welding the joined pieces.) Apart from making a mess and making the next repair job more difficult, I'm told this is a rookie mistake. 2) Botched job. An underground line froze and broke. Nuwave would not stand by their work; I had to pay another company thousands of dollars to repair the line. All told this will cost me $3000. I spoke to Jay repeatedly about the nature of the problem; he seemed completely unable to understand what went wrong or what he had to do with it. Three different pool companies confirmed for me that he is at fault, and two of them told me that Jay is "a shady character" and "disreputable."

    AGEAN BATH & SPA
First, after we had already paid and were walking out, we saw that the salesman had moved and hidden a broken filter cover for the spa on the forklift that he used to bring it out to show us. When we confronted him, he wouldn't admit that he hid it from us and said that he didn't tell us because he was just going to get a new one (even though we were picking it up the next morning). Thankfully the person there the next day made sure one was ordered and shipped to our home. Now, one month after we brought the spa home, it is leaking in our basement. When we picked it up, one of the areas of insulation in the spa was wet and since we were told there were no problems, we assumed it was just wet from being outside or from draining. Now we have come to find that the same area is wet again and there is a leak. Clearly there was a problem from the start. When I called to speak to the owner about all of the issues, he blew me off and basically blamed us for not noticing that something was loose. He would not admit that anything was shady or done improperly. This is because the salesman that already hid things from us is the owners son. Clearly the family is just protecting each other and will not admit any faults. I would never buy a single thing from them again.

    Buckeye Pools
Have used them in the past. We found that 1 Buckeye technician there was willing to troubleshoot difficult issues. Chris (manager/scheduler) has always been evasive on timing and out of touch with the business - lacks specifics of any kind. The technician who delivered a prior successful repair also commented that he was under pressure to wrap work quickly and he would get in trouble for taking the time to solve the issue during the successful repair. (To his credit, it was an obstruction in the main drain; not easy to find.) This time, we requested the same technician and after repeated follow-up the technician visited. The feedback (upon our again calling) was that they weren't interested in doing any of the work because the valve repair was too complicated disregarding all other work requested too. A plumber repaired the PVC valve in 15 minutes of total elapsed time including parking the van. Granted the pool is old which intimidates some pool company technicians. In general, they seem to be seeking new pool work or work on very new pools that goes quickly and without thinking.

At Your Service Pools & Spas LLC
When I called for service, I told them I had a salt water pool and that I wanted the pool opened. They asked what chemicals I needed and I said I didn't know as it would depend on the water testing when the pool was opened. Well, their definition of opening a pool is to take the cover off, put all plugs in the filtration system and tell me that when the water level is high enough, I could just turn it on. They didn't clean, they didn't test the water, etc. When I called back, they told me they didn't do salt water pools. Well, I can tell you from experience, they dont do much at all.
