    Custom Home Works
We were extremely impressed with the craftsmanship that Bill brought to the job. He made several suggestions that improved upon our initial design/ideas and brought the job home in the time-frame and for the cost quoted. We are already in discussion to have him do some additional work for us.

I requested an estimate via angieslist msg on April 10th and receive a reply the same day requesting I email them directly to request an estimate.  I then emailed JNP on on April 10th and did not receive a reply until sending a second email on April 15th at that time we set an estimate for May 4th.  Jacob arrived on time for the estimate May 4th took the some notes on the project  and was very professional.  As he was leaving I asked how long it would be for him to complete the estimate and was told I would take no more than a week.  Understanding that this is the busy season for home remodel projects I sent a follow up email on  May 14th requesting a status update a second email was sent on May 15th and a third email was sent  May 23rd all three emails went unanswered

    • From first contact to installation, everything went according the schedule we agreed upon.  Kathy Morgan, the owner of the company came to our house to see the closet, measure the space and give us some conceptual ideas as to how to improve the functionality of the space.  Kathy emailed us the drawings of the concept we discussed within a couple of days, just as she said she would.  She came back to our house to confirm the drawings and answer any questions we had.  Within a couple of weeks of our paying our deposit, we had an agreed upon date for the work to begin.  On the morning when the work began, the crew showed up exactly at the time we had arranged.  On day one, they tore out the old racking, repaired and painted the walls.  On day two they again showed up on time and began installing the new closet shelves and hanging space.  The crew finished the job on day two just as they had promised.
        • We really loved the conceptual drawing Kathy sent us, it really helped us to visualize the changes and be able to truly understand what we would be getting.

The crew was punctual and professional and left everything spotless when they left.  All we had to do was start hanging our clothes and organize the shelves.

      • As you may recall, it was a very cold and snowy February.  The crew removed their shoes at our door and placed a plastic runner up the steps to protect our relatively new carpet.
      • We are already planning for them to remodel our first floor laundry room.

The installation team was punctual, polite and cleaned up the job site each day.  There were only minimal disruptions to our routines during the install.  All in all, we could not be happier.

    Baker Group Remodeling
Overall, I really liked Phil Baker and his team and I would use him again.  We had a big job and lots of moving parts from a scheduling standpoint with a great deal of custom work to be done regarding media center, bathroom, wet bar and egress window and we had him open up the stairway to the basement.  A very complex basement finish that Phil admitted that some of the issues he had not specifically ever done for a customer.  So, there was a learning curve and he was very responsive and just generally a really great person.  Most importantly, he's a man of his word, never nickeled or dimed us with this or that when things changed on the fly and what he routinely does for finishing a basement was done perfectly - i.e closet doors, built ins, basic framing etc.). His sub contractors were good and professional - such as plumbers and electrician (really good). I hired Phil b/c I could tell he did the work - he would be involved. His crew even helped out when we had some ice damming leading to a leak at a window - he never once talked about his crew's time or the cost.  In the end - we were on the projected budget!!

I have a couple minor criticisms/ issues - some things that should have been anticipated as a problem such as with a custom bathroom (lowered shower ceiling height with a soffit and then not having adequate ventilation for a shower ), floor leveling should be done before starting and some stain matching issues seemed to be avoidable errors, but he did everything to rectify those situations - though a better result would have been had being proactive.   Nobody is perfect and we expected some issues as we worked our way through this build.  Phil keeps some of his costs down by the customer being their own design agent - picking tile and cabinets etc.  This can be a real time commitment. I felt that we were responsible for the creative design elements and unfortunately some design details only come to you when you see things taking shape - once things have taken shape, some design elements can't be added back in - hindsight is 20/20 - I wanted a little more foresight.  This leads to a lot of either compromise or leg work to remedy the issue.  An even more minor issue for us, we were over on the time to complete our (complicated) project.  Honestly - I could care less, but that's the fact (12 weeks was 18 weeks by the time we finished).
In general for those thinking about a big remodel, the 3 issues to think about - dust, dust, dust  -  think ahead and protect your stuff, furnace etc. I knew better and failed to do a good enough job from the start so it's a big clean-up at the end.

Our master closet was a mess. The U shaped white rubber coated shelf provided such a dysfunctional way of hanging and storing our clothes. Not only did it become difficult to use, it was a major eye sore. The closet door was shut at all times. I called several closet designers in the Columbus area and settled on Kathy Morgan of Space Transitions for the following reasons. Her closet designs are custom made. She was not trying to fit pre-made design units into this closet. She really understood what we wanted and needed. She was awesome to work with. She and her team were always punctual. Her installer was top notched. Great guy. The materials she uses are attractive and functional. Her price was very reasonable. The finished product is out of this world! It looks so good and is so functional that I don?t want to put the closet door back up.

    California Closets - Columbus
I called and asked if I could have 2 small shelves made for my master closet (14 x 14 5/8) - small shelves. When they were located in Columbus, if I needed additional shelves as I organized my closets after they were installed I just drove to the Columbus location and they made an additional shelf free of charge right there on site. However, since this company is not in Columbus, the choices are to either have them mailed or to wait weeks until they are in the area on a service call. I chose to have them shipped. The price I paid seemed very high for these little shelves. The most disappointing part was the quality. The melamine was chipped on every side (great way to get snags in your clothing) and it looked like the front of the shelf was glued on. I could see a void between the top and bottom of the shelf and the front. It looked terrible - not even comparable to my existing shelves. I called the company and they initially blamed it on shipping. I told them they were packaged very well. It appeared as though these were scrap pieces that they tried to make into shelves. Then they called me back and told me a service person would be in the area the very next day. When asked if I would be home I said all day except between 1-2 p.m. They stated someone would be at my house after 10 a.m. No one showed up. Then I received a call at 1:00 saying they were on their way. The person said the sheet stated I would only be home at 1:00!!! They did drop off two new shelves that area 80% better (still not as nice as the original), but they still want the bad ones back. Someone is going to stop by next week to get them. I don't want them - they belong in the garbage. Why would a company waste so much in resources - man power, gas, time, wear/tear on a vehicle to pick up two shelves that are about 1 foot by 1 foot and look terrible? It's such an inconvenience. I can't even leave them out on the front porch because of weather - it is pressed board. I would avoid working with this company. They are not the California Closet brand that people are used to and you won't have anyone local for service.

After several quotes, I found Steve through Angie's List and am glad I did. Steve came out and gave a quote and walked us through the process within a couple days of my call. He had some great ideas and really customized the basement and the job to our specifications. The whole process from start to finish was absolutely flawless. Steve kept in constant communication with us the entire time and was open to changes on the fly. For us this was key, because as you start seeing the project come together there are always things to be tweaked and Steve was more than willing to make sure we were happy with the end product. Steve even did some 'extra things" for us including wiring a surround sound system and adding an extra outlet near the ceiling for a TV. Overall the basement has EXCEEDED our expectations and we are very happy with Steve and his work. Thank you Steve.
