Irrigation System reviews in Grove City

    Green Touch Irrigation
We had service performed by Green Touch Irrigation 18-24 months ago. This year, in the spring we contracted with another company to perform our irrigation service for the year. Several weeks ago I received a phone call from Green Touch to schedule the winterization of our sprinkler system. At the time, I asked if this was part of our service contract, and was told it was. I take responsibility that I didn't bother to go back and check which company our contract was with, but I never expected to receive a call from a company I was not currently contracted with, let alone be told it was part of a non-existent contract. My husband was home when they came and performed the service, and I assume it was done appropriately. Imagine my surprise to get a call this week from the company we have our contract with, and the same day, receive a bill from Green Touch! I called and expressed my displeasure at being told they were servicing our (non-existent) contract, but as I expected, they are unwilling to budge on the bill. They told me to call the company we have our contract with and ask for a refund since they won't need to service our system! So they are perfectly willing to ask a competitor to take a loss when they themselves aren't, after obtaining business in a dishonest manner. We'll pay the bill, but obviously won't use them again, and certainly won't recommend them based on their business practices.

    Green Touch Irrigation
Very professional and prompt responses; I appreciated being able to communicate via email with the company because I am very difficult to reach by phone during the work day. On my scheduled appointment date, the technician arrived earlier than expected and waited for us to get home to meet him. Which was a nice change from having to wait on service people! Highly recommend.

    Mike's Landscaping

    Cliff Notes:

Purchased $150 Landscape Review and Design Deal through Angie's List.  Mike was several hours late for the appointment.  He then forgot about completing our landscape design for almost a month.  Then a week later provided a minimal landscape design that did not address our needs.  Attempting to still give Mike an opportunity to save face, we outlined and asked him to quote the work we actually needed.  The quote provided was ridiculously overpriced.

    The Sad Details:

I purchased a $150 Landscape Review and Design offer through Angies List for Mikes Landscaping.  At the time of purchasing (March 17th), I sent a message suggesting several dates and times.  I didnt receive a response until 6 days later, which my calendar had filled up with other appointments, so the original dates no longer worked.  So, on May 25th I just called Mikes Landscaping to schedule an appointment to ensure there would not be a scheduling conflict.  I spoke with Mike directly, he was friendly and easy to speak with.  We scheduled an appointment April 5th at 2PM.  I left work early that day to meet with Mike.  2PM came and went and I believe around 3:30PM I call the office and if I recall correctly they said Mikes previous appointments were running long, but he would still be coming to our appointment.  About an hour later I get a call from Mike to confirm that I still had time to meet with him for our appointment.  Fortunately I did not have other plans that evening, and I did not want to push my luck with needing to leave work another day for another appointment.  Mike finally arrived just after 5PM, he was apologetic about being late. He was still friendly and easy to speak with in person as well.

The deal I purchased through Angies List was for a 2 hour review of your landscape and a design drawing.  I was particularly interesting in this as my property has a number of different challenges and I was interested in seeing how a professional would address them.  I spoke with Mike and told him I was looking for a design that I could implement in stages as I was positive I could not afford to do everything at once.  Several times I mentioned to Mike, that if I was asking for too much design work to stop me and we could discuss an additional fee.   I would call myself a very advanced DIY guy that works to achieves professional level results, but with a baby on the way time is no longer on my side.  I told Mike I was looking to hire him to do most if not all of the work from the design, but probably in stages.  I wasnt necessarily expecting every little detail to be addressed in the design, but I thought maybe about 80% of the major landscape components we discussed would be addressed.  The biggest items I was looking to have addressed is a drainage issue along the back property line, a fence around the backyard, creating some natural privacy off the backside of our pool, and new low maintenance plantings in all of the beds around my house and pool.  Although, after about an hour of discussing what I actually wanted Mike really started hunting for projects that involved pavers and stone work.  One of the things we were considering in the future was to replace our cement walkway to our front porch with pavers.  Although we told Mike the walkway was a low priority, we did agree to discuss that project with Mike as Mike convinced us that the walkway project would not be very expensive.  He also said that if we did the walkway at the same time as the fence and drainage work the walkway would be cheaper since its a smaller project.

At this point the paver walkway now became Mikes focus, and what he decided he would do a detailed design drawing along with updating the landscaping around the walkway.  He also said he would do a design of the overall property outlining the fence and other things we discussed.  We finished our conversations at 6:30, and then Mike spent the next 15 minutes doing measurements.  A little short of 2 hours, but I felt like Mike had a good general understanding of my priorities.  Mike asked us to give him a couple of weeks to work on the designs, and since it was still early April we had not issue with that.

Fast forward 3 weeks to Monday, April 25th, I had not heard anything from Mike so I send his office a message just checking in on the progress.  Mike calls me the following day (Tuesday), again apologetic, saying we slipped between the cracks (ie he forgot all about us), but he would send me a design by Wednesday.  I was hopeful that he meant the following day, but the following day came and went with nothing.  Then on Tuesday May 3rd, I received another call from Mike in the evening saying they had completed the design, and I would receive it the next day.  At 2PM in the afternoon on May 4th I received.. a written design estimate.  The quote was for $9k, which seemed a little high, but within reason for the work outlined.  Although without the design drawing I didn't know exactly what he had planned. Within the hour for receiving the written quote, I responded to the email thanking them for the quote, but asked about the design drawing.

Two more days go by and I hear nothing from Mikes.  Its now been over a month since Mike was at my house, so I called and left a voicemail at the office around 10-11AM.  I heard nothing from them from them that afternoon.  So, that evening I looked back through my call history and found Mikes cell phone number.  I called and left Mike a voicemail saying that I was disappointed, and asked that he give me a call.  Mike and I then played phone tag leaving voicemails for one another that Friday evening.  Mike was out of town for the weekend, but promised in one of the voicemail that he would get me the designs first thing Monday morning.

Monday, May 9th almost 11AM, I finally receive design drawings from a Christian at Mikes Landscaping.  The design for the paver walkway was nice, but simple, color overhead design layout.  The plantings selected would fill the space well with mixed colors and textures, and meet our low maintenance request.   Although, after reviewing the written quote we received the previous week my wife and I had already decided it was not a good investment at this time.  The second drawing was a very basic overhead view of my property which included a fence line, but it did not take into consideration several key requirements that I had discussed with Mike.  It only included a fence on two side of my property, and tied into existing neighbor fence, which I told Mike when we meet in April that we could not and did not want to do.  This drawing also included 5 oddly placed trees to sever as privacy for the pool, but again did not take into consideration my request to not block the evening sun.  The drawings included nothing else that we discussed.

Even after all of this delay, I still wanted to give Mike an opportunity to earn the business for the fencing and drainage, so that afternoon I called Mikes office and spoke with Mike and Christian.  I explained I just wanted to simplify the scope of work to just a fence and the drainage.  Mikes original quote included pressure treated pine fence panels, and I asked that we upgrade them to Cedar.  Although, I could not get a clear answer if the fence panels would be pre-made or built onsite.  When I asked about the types of fasteners the used, they did not know but would look into it!  This is important when using cedar wood as the oils in cedar, and weather conditions can react with certain metals.  This can stain the wood every place a nail is used, and/or the nail can rout out causing you fence to fail quicker.  Mike said they would update the quote and get it to me by Wednesday May 11th.

Wednesday, May 11th.  I missed a call from Christian, but he left a voicemail outlining the changes I requested again and he said he would have the updated quote by the end of the day or first thing tomorrow at the latest.  I did not receive the updated quote until almost 3PM the following day.  The updated quote was now $12,000 for just a cedar fence and the drainage work.  The drainage part of both of these quotes was about $1000, making the fence now about $11,000.   The price difference from PT fence to a Cedar fence was $8200.  After receiving this $12k quote I laughed, and immediately started calling other companies.  Within one week I have now received several competitive fence quotes for $3-4k for a Cedar Fence.  I will be sourcing quotes for the landscaping and drainage work shortly as well.

Mike seems like a nice guy, and I tried to give Mikes Landscaping several opportunities to show me they are a professional operation to earn this project and future business, but instead that would rather just throw a ridiculously overpriced quote at me.  Given that they have an A rating and are able to offer sale deals like the one I bought through Angie's List I wanted everyone to know my experience with them.  I would recommend steering clear.

Rain One Irrigation & Drainage Systems
I have mixed feelings about Rain One.
    The good:
The crew that came out and installed the french drain was really nice. They completed the job in one day and the pipe they installed moves a lot of water very efficiently. I had quotes from lots of landscaping companies and they were all priced higher, but didn't seem to understand proper trench sloping like Rain did, which was very concerning. None of the landscaping companies ever mentioned using a sod cutter either, they all suggested planting grass seed. Using a sod cutter is hands down the best approach to preserving your turf when trenching across a yard.
Also, Bobby (who seemed to be the project lead), was fantastic. He was extremely nice and I felt very comfortable with him on the job. I've had the pipe installed about a month now and it has performed excellent so far, actually better than my expectations.
    The bad:
The sales rep lied to me about the materials being used, and I had a sneaking suspicion he was going to from day one.
When he came out for the quote I specifically asked for perforated pvc, but he was gun ho on using perforated corrugated instead.
I got a quote from him later in the day that listed perforated corrugated pipe as the material to be used.
I then replied, asking for a quote for perforated pvc and had him update the contract to specifically list it.
He sent the updated contract back to me and said there was no price difference, which was a big red flag.
PVC is noticeably more expensive than corrugated, plus you have to buy more fittings and the labor cost would be more expensive since you have to assemble it.
So the day the crew came out for the install, they brought all of the extra fittings I had requested for a few custom things (clean outs, fittings to hook into a couple downspouts, etc) but low and behold there was a giant roll of corrugated perf pipe.
I asked the project lead (Bobby, who was fantastic, very professional and friendly) about the pipe and he had no idea it was supposed to be pvc. So given that and the back story leading up to it, it was quite evident to me that the sales rep thought it was more appropriate to be deceitful and do things his way than the paying customers. I specifically wanted pvc because it has better flow quality having smooth walls, longer life, and easier to clean out...but don't take my word for it. Google "french drain corrugated vs pvc" and every site you hit will tell you that.
Ultimately, I didn't say anything else to Bobby and let them go ahead and install the corrugated pipe because I literally had water flowing across my yard and into my basement the days leading up to them coming out. But the sales rep's dishonesty certainly needs to be called out because I dropped a lot of cash on this project and it should have been done exactly how I wanted it. Looking back, I regret not stopping them and having them head back for the pvc. I shouldn't have let the sales rep get his way.

Rain One Irrigation & Drainage Systems
I recently purchased a home that had an existing irrigation system.  I had no clue of the overall status of the system.  All I knew was there were sprinkler heads in the yard and they never came on.  The tech, Jesus, arrived at the house promptly.  Jesus is by far the nicest and friendliest tech I have had the pleasure of dealing with.  He listened to my concerns and began his detective work to see what shape the system was in.  He and his assistant reconnected the system and tested it.  They discovered several issues and were able to resolve all of them right then, on site.  Jesus was even able to remove one sprinkler that would no longer be needed due to our change of landscaping of the property.  After everything was up and running he took the time to walk me through how to set up and control the system.  Rain One will be the company that I call anytime I have an issue or need with the system. A+++++++++

    AK Irrigation
2 days later his guys returned to fix the leak, re-route the heads and adjust everything to work and spray properly.  The guys that responded were very prompt and repaired everything quickly.  They fixed the leak and moved the line to where I wanted, then adjusted the heads.  Once they had completed this in about an hour, they showed me how to work my panel to set everything up since the company that installed it didn't do that even after I asked them to twice  I was very pleased with AK Irrigation and will recommend them to everyone.

They did great service. They sent a letter a few month ago asking us if we wanted to the service. They give you different options. You can have just a spring service or the spring and fall service or a test or you can have irrigation service as well. They give you four or five options and then, you can select one and mail it back. Then, they can set you up with an appointment based on your selection.

    AK Irrigation
The technician arrived when he said he would and quickly got to work.  He wasn't the most personable, but he was professional and answered all of my questions and even offered some advice for next year.  He seemed pretty knowledgeable and was very efficient.  I was hoping for a little more of his time to maybe learn more about our system, but I understand he was probably really busy winterizing as it is mid-October.  I believe we will call the same company in the spring and hopefully fine-tune our irrigation system at that time.

Another pleasant experience with Rich and his crew!   Rich listened to what we had in mind, made excellent suggestions then drew up and sent us a plan.  His crew is excellent - personable, hard workers and and very reliable.  We are extremely happy with the results!
