Exterior Contractor reviews in Gates Mills

  • A
Outstanding. Previous contractor did 1/2 the job in 3 months (after quoting 2) and then abandoned. Didn't show up many days and/or late. Bob stepped in and completed the job in 3 weeks. He was the original mason on our home and I will not trust anyone else. The crew arrived early (7 am) every day, never skipped a beat and worked until the job was done. They were extremely professional, nice, and did an outstanding job!

Great. The removal of the old linoleum was a major undertaking. Our prior handyman declined to undertake the job because of the difficulty of the work. They did a great job. Looks beautiful. The price was very reasonable. We are bringing James back for additional outdoor work. Very professional and James provided a quick response to our initial phone call, texts and quote.

    Henry Fence
It was a disappointment. The materials used for both projects were cheap and of substantially lower quality than what I had before. Many pickets had rotting knots. Some were so obviously unacceptable I asked that they be replaced, which Henry Fence reluctantly agreed to but they never should have been used in the first place. The split rails are like toothpicks compared to what I had before, and many have rotting knots as well. (Unfortunately, my previous fence contractor retired and moved away.) The picket fence is on a gradual slope and I took it for granted that the slope would be handled in the same esthetically pleasing manner as done by my previous contractor, yet Henry Fence's attempt looks amateurish, going up and down and up and down. They couldn't even bother to cut the posts off at the same height as each other. The workers asked where to place surplus soil from digging posts and I gave them a location on the driveway, which they used. However, I noticed one worker going to the rear of my property with a wheelbarrow. I thought he was taking material for the split rail part of the project, but instead I found that he dumped cement and other debris just behind my fence on Land Conservancy property. Aside from the shoddy workmanship and cheap materials is the lack of professionalism by Henry Fence's management. The initial stab at the project was completed on a Friday, and on Monday, I received invoices for the balance due by email and by Tuesday, invoices again by US Mail. I emailed about the problem with the rotting pickets and within a day was contacted by someone named Anthony, I believe. He tried to blow me off, claiming that it was a cosmetic issue and it would be difficult for them to get more pickets, but I went on to complain about the amateurish appearance of the picket fence and he quickly acquiesced and said he would replace the rotting pickets, but said nothing about correcting the pitch of the fence. Clearly this would have been time-consuming and quite frankly, I think accomplishing that is beyond their skill level. The pickets were replaced the next day. (Funny how they could find the materials so quickly!) Within a couple of hours of the workers leaving as my husband and I were having our dinner, a man comes to our door unannounced, claiming to be from Henry Fence, but wearing a polo shirt with another company logo on it. ("Leisure Spaces" or something like that.) He was looking for payment for the job, and asked twice for me to give him a check. I told him I would put it in the mail that evening (which I did). I found it very irritating that they sat on my $1000 deposit for six weeks (for the picket fence), and a further $500 deposit (for the split rail fence) for four weeks, and then without even giving me the courtesy to review the final work with someone on their management team (with adequate notice), were so demanding of immediate payment. I would not use them again.

Pat gave me a quick response and estimate via email. He gave me an approximate timeframe, subject to weather(with all this heat this summer mortar dries out too quickly). He and associate came over and completed all the work in a day. He held to his estimate and the work looks great. He also made a few suggestions that he spotted around the house foundation for us to consider.

    Crossworld Awning Co
Stay away! The owner Stan is the most miserable salesman I have seen in a long time. He arrived at the tail end of the window given which was not an issue. However, when I greeted him at the door, it was evident he was in a bad mood. Keep in mind, I was prepared to pay into the thousands as I needed 5 awnings in various sizes and types, on two separate homes. After I showed him the second location, he was argumentative and it was clear that no matter what I said, I was going to be incorrect in his opinion. I tried to tell him the measure was too long (by a foot) and he insisted he was correct. After many attempts to explain it to him, it was obvious to him, I knew nothing and was ignorant when it came to measuring. Needless to say, I was correct and his miserable attitude became worse. At this point I simply and nicely asked him to leave and told him I will call another company as it was clear he did not want the job. He then yelled "I'M NOT BEING RUDE!" Woah!!!! Then he caught himself yelling and pulled it together long enough to apologize and asked for another chance. Since he yelled at me, I was not going to waste my time or his as it was clear it would not work. After telling him no, he yelled yet again saying "I have an 'A' rating with the BBB and I ve been in business for...". I told him that life is too short to be so rude and condescending and asked him again (politely) to leave. He did leave but the reader should know, that Stan is grumpy and take warning if you catch him in such a mood! Sorry Stan but there are far to many businesses that would appreciate a big job like I have and would not yell at me for ANY reason. I think I will call them... Life is too short, be kind!

I talked with them in July of that year.  They were really busy, as were all masons at that time.  He came out promptly, gave me a quote and told me he would get in done in September.  He was true to his word, did a great job, very pleased.  I would highly recommend.

I own a Geodesic home which has cedar shake roofing. John removed all damaged and rotted shingles power washed and replaced with his custom ordered cedar shake. He only uses top quality. These guys are seasoned crafters and meticulous for detail. Afterwards the whole house was treated with a special oil. The house looks new. John and his crew are honest and punctual. I never had a good fix it guy. Always something. These guys are top notch and pride themselves as artists working for your approval. Never did they ignore my requests and always communicated the plan. I can say that I have found my repair crew!

    Willoughby Fence
Nick did an excellent job.  He was on time and always courteous.  The materials and quality of construction were excellent.  I have been a homeowner for over 40 years and I have rarely found a contractor who treated my home like it was his own.  We couldn't be more pleased and recommend Willoughby Fence to anyone who needs to repair or construct a new fence.  We would definitely use this company again.

Al and his dad came to our house and were very professional, courteous and down to earth.  My husband and I liked them immediately.  We had already received 2 estimates to install new vinyl siding on our house and detached garage.  We don't necessarily choose a contractor by lowest bid, but Al's price was the best and we liked the idea of working with a small family owned business.  We had to receive approval from the Gates Mills Board, so both Al and his dad went to the meeting to present our project before we even signed a contract with them.  Gates Mills required some changes in product and design that caused an increase in price, and Al discussed all details and price differences with us so there were no surprises once the job started.  He also did not ask for any down payment or deposit, but payment in full once the job was finished and we were completely satisfied.

Al's crew were professional, on time, did excellent work, and cleaned up everything.  They installed heavy duty corner posts (which we hadn't even thought to ask about), "fluted" the casing around the front door for a more decorative look, and replaced all  casings around the windows since Gates Mills did not allow "J" channels.  In addition to installing new siding, our contract included all new gutters with leaf guard, new downspouts, 15 sets of louvered shutters, and replacement of automatic door, man door, and 2 windows on our detached garage.  On the day the work was to be completed, we met Al to walk the job.  We found a few things which they took care of right away.  A few weeks later, we discovered a couple minor issues which were taken care of in a timely manner.

In addition to this job, we also hired Al's company to replace our barn roof.  It was a complete tear down and included some plywood that needed replaced.  Al has a separate roofing crew, and we were unsure of doing both these jobs due to the cost, but he offered us a discount which we couldn't pass up.  Our barn roof was in pretty bad shape, and after the winter we had, we definitely made a good decision to have it done.  Just like their siding crew, the roofing crew did an excellent job.  We found no evidence of the tear down since they did such a good job cleaning up.

Bottom line is our home and garage look brand new!  We highly recommend Al's company and would hire them again without reservation.

I recently purchased a home in bad need of tuckpointing.  When calling for quotes, Pat was the only one of four masons that I called who came out promptly for a quote.  His quote was reasonable, though not the lowest.  Because of the rainy spring, Pat was delayed from working on my home past his original estimated start date.  When he was able to start the work, however, the job turned out to be worse than he expected.  He had quoted me with the belief that about 10 -15 bricks would need to be removed.  It turned out to be about 40 bricks were removed. However, he repaired it correctly, and only asked if I could reimburse him for the extra materials - no extra labor charge, even though the scope of the repair had about tripled.  He also made suggestions of things I could do to help maintain chimney so problem did not reoccur.  He and his helper were polite and neat.  I would easily hire him again if I needed more masonry work.
