  • I have had a service contract with Atlas Butler for several years now and I was only just recently that I realized what a mistake I made.  My central air unit stopped cooling and an Atlas Butler technician diagnosed it as a blown capacitor.  The price to fix it was $350 + the service call - and this included the "discount" I would have received for having a service contract.  Since I have routinely had capacitors replaced practically every year on the AC units at my property in Texas for a mere fraction of this price, I knew this price was way too high.  So I declined to allow him to replace it and I ordered the exact same capacitor online from Amazon .Com for $23.00.  Then I called several companies on Angie's List to find one who would agree to install and test the whole system once the replacement capacitor arrived.  As expected, most of the companies would not warranty their work if they installed a part that I ordered.  When I explained to them why I was looking for another company to perform the work (without at first mentioning Atlas Butler), they - without exception- started volunteering horror stories of following behind "a certain AC company" and learning of the outrageous prices that the unfortunate customers had been charged.  When they finished with their litany of overcharged work performed by "this company", I finally revealed that it was Atlas Butler that I wished to replace, and was told that they knew all along it was them - they've heard the same story too many times.  This points out one of the central flaws of Angie's List.  If I, as a consumer, didn't already have a very good idea of what it cost to simply pop in a new capacitor, the only basis for rating the company would be how promptly the service technician arrived, how courteous he was and whether he put booties on his feet in my house.  Then, I might be tempted to give a high Angie's List rating (thus fooling other users) for service that was a complete rip off compared to other companies.  One of the companies I talked to who would not be able to perform the work as soon as I wanted, was kind enough to recommend Favret Heating & Cooling.  The technician just left the house and the unit is now working fine.  Cost = $123.30.  I was told that if I had a service contract with them, the cost would have been a whopping $60 - and that includes them supplying the capacitor instead of me.  Compare that to a little over $400 with Atlas Butler.  I'm canceling my service contract with Atlas Butler today.

  • I was having trouble keeping the pilot light lit in the fireplace for the gas logs. I called Specialty Gas, spoke with Justin about the problem. He was very pleasant and took the time to  ask me a few questions trying to figure out what could be going on with the unit.. After assessing the problem, we scheduled an apointment.
    The technician( Darryl) came to the house exactly at the scheduled  time. He introduced himself and upon entering, he removed his shoes and laid down a tarp to protect the floor. He checked everything out , explaining to me what he was checking and what he thought the problem was. As it turned out, there was a bad part that had to be replaced. As luck would have it, Darryl actually had the part with him and was able to replace it right then.
    I used this company years ago. I felt that they were one of the best then and I feel that they are now as well. It is very difficult today to find companies and employees that take pride in their work, I can assure you this company does.

  • I called thinking I needed a service call on my gas fireplace; however, after talking with the gentleman, he advised me that I didn't need to spend the money.  My unit is working as usual and provided some great ideas on resolving what issues i feel I have (soot buildup, uneven flame, etc.).  I will definitely use a company that doesn't take advantage of an uneducated home owner just for some money!   So refreshing to have honesty in this type of situation!  Thank you!

  • I visited Specialty Gas in early Dec. 2009 to discuss the pros and cons of retrofitting our regular gas log fireplace with ventless logs. We had solved a water leak, but had never solved the considerable cold-air drafts from the chimney (and later discovered the air-intake vent at side of fireplace, which no one had previously thought about as the source of the problem). I selected the high-end logs with multi-stage remote, and a custom glass/brass doors. The owner visited subsequently to measure for the doors. Several weeks later the logs were installed and some pink insultation installed (stuffed into the chimney opening). That did not solve the cold air problem. The guy who came out to install the logs said we might have to call another company to install "black insulation" in the air intake vent and/or to install a metal plate to block the chimney air in lieu of installing a new damper (which is no longer needed with ventless logs, of course). Amyway, I had to call the owner and ask if he could come out and do a more thorough job with installing more insulation, including the black insulation, since the whole reason I was spending $2,000 was to 1) solve the cold air problem; and 2) have a working fireplace again that did not involve opening and closing dampers, etc. (and I did not want to spend thousands more to install a direct vent fireplace). So finally, after more discussion, Specialty Gas did solve the problem. There was a delay with the glass doors because the opening had not been measured correctly at first, so it was mid-January before we had everything in order. I do feel that Specialty Gas is a good company and willing to solve problems. I don't think they are quite what some others have touted.

  • Tech dismantled and cleaned the logs. He explained what causes the problem and how in the future it could be avoided. Did not rush and stayed until he was certain problem was corrected. Excellent job as logs have worked great everyday for the past four days. Appreciated when I made the arrangements for the service call. The person fielding the call, asked many questions about my problem as opposed to just setting up a service time. The tech explained things and then went to work. No wasted effort as had the feeling that he really knew what he was doing. Cleaned out parts and re-worked the logs, gave advice as to avoid the problem in the future. He also stayed and made certain the fireplace worked. He had a good attitude.
